After a long night of no sleep and leaking roof we decided to get out of 'Utopia' and seek more earthly accomodation! Sat in the waterlogged restaurant while parts of the roof fell off in the wind, chatted to a German couple who had decided to invest in some property on Kho Phangnan. They said that a couple of the best beaches were on the NE of the island called Haad Thongnaipan Noi & Haad Thongnaipan Yai. They also recommended that we stay in Milky Bay Resort! While the wind had subsided, there was still torrential rain. The sandy tracks (no roads) were knee deep in water and filth. We managed to beg a lift from Utopia to Milky Bay. Roads were more like rivers. Homes were flooded, the whole place underwater. Got dropped off a ... read more

Extortionately priced taxi further up the island to mountainous and underdeveloped North of Ko Phangan. Haad Mae/Chalokum. 1 night. Stayed at Utopia Resort (clearly named in the ironic sense of the word) Would like to get the name of the photographer they hired to take photos of the resort - it looked great in the travel guide!! Utopia was anything but! The resort was balanced precariously on top of the mountain, and was still being built, a major construction site. By now the storm had arrived with torrential rain and howling winds! The hut has a resident lizard and a few rather large cockroaches in the bathroom!... read more

Attempted to get early morning speed or cattermarran to Koh Phangnan - Thai time took over. 2 hours later and much confusion suffered, crammed onto a catterman bound for the other islands. Weather a little Windy and rainy, sat upstairs for the view, which was our first mistake!!. Waves crashed over the top of the boat and drenched whole group constantly for 1.5 hours, people being sick over edge of boat, quite a few people genuinely quite frightened. Disembarked - grateful to be alive but completely drenched. Decided to stay at Long Bay Resort, Haad Yao. 3 nights. Very pleasent gardens, beach front pool, jacuzzi, restaurant. Golf buggied around the gardens. Dogs a whole lot more menacing that on Koh Tao! Hired a moped to tour the island (east and west coach and inland). Waterfalls/local fishing ... read more

After Kuala Lumpur, we headed to Phuket (Thailand) to meet two of my friends from Toronto, Deb and Susan. We spent two days catching up on a beach in an area of Phuket that was hit quite hard by the tsunami last year and is still in the midst of reconstruction. Following a little catch up time we headed east to Koh Phangan: the site of the famous (infamous) Full Moon Party. Tara decided that heading up north was more her style and so she carried on up to Bangkok. Koh Phangan is a cute little jungle island of 168 km2. It has beautiful beaches with clear, warm water. Haad Rin is the beach where the Full Moon Party is held and between 8000 -15 000 tourists are drawn to the event. The next few days ... read more

Hi There It is two days after full moon. Been sleeping heaps. Full Moon was on the 16th and we got a taxi with 12 other people from our resort down to haad rin, the location for full moon. Got there about midnight and the place was packed with touros. Couldnt get down to the beach area so we when to a quite club for drinks till about 5am. By that stage the crowd had sufficiently cleared so we could get onto the beach. There's like 20 clubs right on the beach all pumping out all sorts of music, loved the cheesy house and progressive music myself but the others wanted more psy. We hung out with a german couple from our resort, Itza and Ricky. I could only remember her name by thinking of ... read more

note to readers: this blog contains details that may be inapproprite for loving family members! read at your own risk... but don't worry, we are still alive and well! after Koh Tao we took a ferry boat to another island called Ko Pha Ngan. we have been hearing stories about this place throughout our travels, but still we were so unprepared for how crazy it truly was. we met up with two of our friends from uc davis, and the four of us shared a cute little bungalow right by the beach. the hotel we stayed at, coral, threw parties in their restaurant overlooking the sunset every night. on one of these drunken nights, the dj asked us if we wanted to be ring girls in the thai boxing match he was announcing for. it was ... read more

Those of you who know me best will be aware that I was always more of a guitar sing-song in someone's gaff with a few bevvies and a few mates type of guy and not one to go for the drug-induced euphoria of rave parties. But as any one of the hundreds of thousands of travellers who have made the pilgrimmage to Ko Phan Ngang since 1995 would tell you, Full Moon is no ordinary rave party. And despite my normal aversions to over-hyped DJs, house, dance and trance, I could only soup up the spectacle as I was, literally, party to this Wonder of the Backpackers' World. To get the full benefit of this mail, I'd suggest looking for the most funked up CD in your collection and turn up the sound full blast. The ... read more

After leaving our very homely little bungalows in Krabi we headed over to the east coast to the island of Ko Samui. It was yet another one of Thailands unforgettable bus journeys which took about 5hrs..no air-con and probably about 3 times as many people as it should hold, on it..so you can just imagine how hot we were! We now realise that no matter how much more money you pay for luxury they all the same rusty tim cans on wheels!! After that we got thrown off into a travel agents in some town in the middle of nowhere where we waited to or more hours until another bus came and took us to the ferry. Finally we did arrive at our little place and it was lovely so was definitly worth the trek! It ... read more

Firstly, sorry for not putting any entries into this blog since I've arrived. I had all the good intentions, but now I'm here, the last thing I want to do is sit in an internet cafe. The weather is beautiful and there is so much (or little) to do and it's just too lovely, so again, sorry! I will try to keep up-to-date. Anyway, I have been in Thailand for around three weeks now, but in this entry I will only really talk about the first two as I am now currently eslewhere from Ko Pha Ngan (never really sure how you spell it - it's different everywhere you look). I decided to go to Ko Pha Ngan as my first stop on the recommendation of Kate T who had been there previous year and loved ... read more

We had a great time on Koh Tao, but we wanted to spice things up a little and head over to the famous Koh Phangan. All of the islands in Thailand start with "Koh" and then end with an individual name. Koh Tao means Turtle Island (I still think it should be called Dog Island because of the hundreds of stray dogs lurking around for us to drop some of our 7-11 dinners!). I’m not sure what Phangan means, but it probably has something to do with really big parties. We ferried our way over to Phangan and took a taxi truck over to the popular beach which hosts the full moon parties every month. This area of town is completely occupied by travelers and stores catering to our needs (basically beer & curry). The beach ... read more
