************************Happy New Year!!!*****************************
I flew in from Hanoi to Bangkok on the 27th December to meet up with friends from back home. Marianne arrived on the 28th and Claire arrived on the 29th. On the night Marianne arrived we went out drinking on Ko San Road and met some, erm, interesting people including a mad mad irishman and a Gwen Stefanni lookalike from Norway who was convinced the undercover cops were after her.... The two of them together was comedy genius, i'd pay to see that again. Then, just when I didn't think things could get more surreal Claire arrived and we ended up in a bitch fight with some ladyboys over a game of pool and walked home soaking wet up Ko San Road at 8AM after playing "Flip Flop water polo" with some Dutch blokes on a rooftop swimming pool as the sun came up. It was a sign of things to come. On the night of the 30th we began the journey down to Ko Pha Ngan where we were to spend New Year. It took an overnight bus and a boat to get there, I can't remember how long it took as I slept most of it
Party bus gang
Me, Wayne, Marianne, Claire but I do remember it was the most colourful bus I've ever seen in my life. It was beautiful.... bright pink curtains with pom poms. Inspired.
When we finally arrived in KPN it was New Years eve and we were very very lucky to get the last beach hut on Hat Rin (sunset beach). The full moon party and New Year party takes place on sunrise beach, about a 10 min walk from our hut which was perfect. Other people from our boat were forced to stay further up the island requiring a taxi to the party. It was a fantastic night - I want to spend every New Year from now on on a beach! We drank (and spilled) a fair amount of buckets..... Samsung, Coke and Thai red bull and were still going strong as the sun came up at 6AM.
The next few days are a bit blurry.... buckets/dancing, sunsets/sunrises, sleeping in hammocks/on beaches. One day we took a boat trip out to the islands where we went snorkelling and Kayaking and I amazed Marianne and everyone on board with my ability to sleep on a speed boat as it bounces over waves with spray in my
face. It's a talent. Another day Marianne and I had the brilliant idea of hiring mopeds..... No question of licences or helmets they just handed us the keys. They weren't even concerned that we sat for 20 mins trying to work out how to start the things! Shockingly, I crashed within 15 mins, got the fear and returned the bike. (don't worry Mum I wasn't hurt)
Partying aside there isn't much to Ko Pha Ngan so we were all pretty ready to leave after a couple of days and get back to some serious travelling in Northern Thailand.
