Day 4 Saturday - January 16 Morning Blog A DAY WE’VE BEEN WAITING FOR AND DREAMING ABOUT! We got up early and had a nice breakfast. Nok and Poi were there to pick us up at 8:30 for the drive to our private Elephant Life Experience in Mae Taman Valley, the only boutique elephant camp in Thailand. On the way we made a quick stop at a street market and walked around for a few minutes. As we continued down the road, I noticed a sign that said Tiger Kingdom. I asked Nok what it was and she said if we had time on the way back we could stop there. Upon arriving at the main lodge of Elephant Life Experience (ELE), we were greeted by our host, who introduced us to the team and discussed ... read more

Day 4-Saturday-January 16 Afternoon Having seen the sign for Tiger Kingdom this morning on our way to the Elephant Life Experience, we stopped on our way back. Tiger Kingdom in Chiang Mai was opened in 2008. The first one was opened in Ubon, Thailand in 2000. Tigers at Tiger Kingdom are hand raised by their trainers since young, bonding with it throughout the development process. The trainer employs a combination of repetition, trust and encouragement to train their big cats and over time the Big Cat are accustomed to humans and often see us as one of the family. In Tiger Kingdom, the well-trained and experienced staff will ensure your safety, but these Big Cats are still wild animals that need to treated with respect. Wow…what an experience! Upon entering, you have a choice of how ... read more

Wang Chin. To me, it sounds more like the name of a Chinese town, but in fact, it is in Thailand, and I never would have come here without a bicycle, This is the beauty of traveling on a bike: you go to places that few people get to see and sometimes, it's just these places that become the highlights of a trip. But first thing first. I left Chiang Mai a few days ago. My bike was finally in better shape and I was ready to go. It was almost hard to leave my guest house: after 4 days, it felt like home and I was enjoying the comfort of a 900 bhat room! The owner was watching me packing and she took photos, she could not believe that I was going to travel on ... read more

สวัสดี S̄wạs̄dī - Hello from Nan, Thailand! Today was a much needed rest day at a lovely resort in Nan, Thailand. So we rested until about noon...... then we got the itch to do a little ridding. I forgot to mention in my last post, that we changed tour guides. Noah, our last tour guide rode back to Chiang Mai with the departing group from yesterday. Our tour guide is now Kay and he was NOT at all up for riding on a rest day. But, as persuasion would have it, he caved and we went for a two hour ride anyway. He did make us pay for our own gas though. So after two hours of riding and about 140 baht ($3.90) later we returned back to our resort and prepared for an evening out ... read more

So I realize that I am a bit behind on blogging my daily rides, but the ride schedule has been a little more demanding than I thought it was going to be. Plus, it certainly doesn't help that every time we stop for the evening, our tour guide Noah rings the "Beer-thirty" bell. Anyway, stay tuned for more entries and thanks for reading. สวัสดี S̄wạs̄dī - Hello from Nan, Thailand! Today we left the Golden Triangle and rode along the scenic farming areas to Chiang Rai city. In Chiang Rai, we visited the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) one of the top 10 wonder temples in the world. Along with the main temple, there were several smaller temples. All of the temples in this area are colored white except for one, smaller golden temple. Any ideas ... read more

Before leaving the town of Pai, we visited the Pai World War II Memorial Bridge. The bridge was erected in 1942 and used by the Japanese to transport weapons and provisions to Myanmar (Burma) during World War II. The bridge was built entirely by American POW labor. As the story goes, after the construction was completed, all American POWs were marched down to the river bank and executed. The original bridge was washed away by flooding in 1973, but it was rebuilt by the locals and used for quite some time after that. The bridge has since been abandon and is now a WWII memorial landmark. สวัสดี S̄wạs̄dī - Hello from Tha Ton, Thailand! Today was a demanding and challenging ride through the steep, winding mountain roads between the cities of Pai and Tha Ton. Since ... read more

We had arrived in Bangkok at our estimated arrival time of 4-45pm yesterday afternoon and, whilst coming into land, the first thing we could see out the window of the plane were (literally) thousands of rice paddies spread out below us, stretching away to the horizon, as far as the eye could see. Disembarking from our flight, we headed straight towards baggage collection and immigration which took awhile, as the process wasn’t the quickest. Whilst waiting in the queue, I knew I must be in Thailand, by the amount of perspiration already running down my back and, I wasn’t even outside yet! AND, the airport was air conditioned to a degree! Getting through Customs and Immigration at Bangkok airport was a bit of a slow process after what felt like a walk of a mile and ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Northern Thailand » Phitsanulok April 20th 2015

Deciding that I wanted to continue travelling by train the next obvious stop north was phitsanulok. Although not recommended as a place to visit, it sits just 1hr east of sukhathai - which I plan to visit after but has no train line direct to it. So buying a 2nd class ticket for 450 baht - which seemed a little expensive by Thai standards but being told its a fast train ( didn't think that really existed!) and then sitting and waiting for a train that was 45 minutes late I wasn't overly impressed! Being given a drink, biscuits and lunch on the journey which I wasn't expecting, kind of softened the blow - and made up a little bit of the cost. 3and a half hours and i had arrived followed by a 10 minute ... read more
