Thursday 11 February Today started badly. We go down to breakfast to find our noisy rude Chinese have been replaced by an equally obnoxious bunch so we breakfast quickly and return to our room to plan the day. As we are going South from here on Saturday we are unlikely to do any more trekking or require warm clothing, so we parcel up the lot and ship it back Air parcel post, a full 6 kilos. This means we can now visit the Markets and replenish our summer clothing and look for mementoes. Well, It had to be done - in all the time we have been in the Far East we have generally been able to avoid visiting the Wats, but as Chiang Mai is renowned for them we give into our cultural conscience and ... read more

Tuesday 9 February Another early start today, Alf had organised a trek circumnavigating the forest of Doi InthanonThailand's highest mountain, within a national park created around it. Our trip includes a driver, minibus,an English-speaking guide named Pear and the 6 of us old veteran Phoenix walkers. The journey takes one and a half hours and we drive to the summit, our first stop being a viewing platform. Unfortunately, what should have been spectacular views is a little spoilt by the misty conditions. After a few photographs and a visit to a shrine on the very highest point (including a quick visit to the highest loo in Thailand) we drive on, descending to the Rangers station where we meet our guide for the trek. We are told the walk is circular with a few ups and downs ... read more

Monday 8 February Knowing we face a 170 odd Km journey back to Chiangmai we breakfast and leave early, sharing the driving between the four of us. We called in at the Bueng Farm in Pai on the way back to retrieve Paula's mobile phone (left there by mistake), then a break for lunch at a delightful restaurant set in a hillside where we all ate Thai. Finally reaching Changmai at 3 pm. Our hotel is just outside the old city walls by the Changmai gate, it is small but very well managed and all mod cons. Room and breakfast £40per night. Even has swimming pool! We arranged to meet up with Alf, Marilyn, Tony and Janet for dinner on the other side of the Old City at a restaurant on the river. Very traditional decor. ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Northern Thailand » Phitsanulok February 8th 2016

Saturday 6 February Breakfasted at 8.30am then collected at 9am by Toy as arranged. We were driven to a local village where we met our guide, Peeuk. He led us an exhilarating three and a half hour trek to his own Shan village of Ban MaeLanka. It was estimated to be 15 kilometres in length, however we agreed it was closer to 12, as our guide took a couple of shortcuts, requiring him to carve a route through virgin forest at times. We passed a few small villages in an area called Ban Jabo, inhabited by the Black Lao tribe. Along the way Peeuk cut and shaped bamboo walking poles which we certainly appreciated on some of the very steep trails he also picked an assortment of different nuts and leaves to eat, and toward the ... read more

Sunday 7 February Woke a little sluggishly due to last night's beer and wine consumption, and slowly packed luggage for another travel day, new destination, Mae Hong Son. (Yes, we HAVE been through this town before on our way around this loop). However, we had arranged to use our time here in Pang Mapha as effectively as possible, hence, after breakast, we were on our way to visit the Tham Lod caves. We hiked the 9km along a good Tarmac road, through beautiful forests, cultivated terraced fields and arrived at the cave entrance two hours later. Setting off with a guide in long bamboo boats, we passed a very pleasant hour or so viewing the ancient stalactites and stalagmites and the interesting formations which resembled various things such as elephants, parrots, waterfalls and UFOs (or not). The ... read more

Friday 5 February Leo at the lake once more, misty and cold at 7.00am. You have to admire his dedication. Paula enjoys a sneaky extra half hour sleep before bringing Leo a steaming hot mug of tea. Day begun! Time to pack, were checking out at eleven am. Two mugs of tea later, Leo exhausts his bait mix, casts out for the final time and scores - big time! Beautiful Fish biggest of the trip, it took both Paula and Leo's joint efforts and five minutes hard work to land.Job done we finished packing to rendezvous with our travelling companions at reception to check out and continue our journey, now in reverse to Pang Mapha, leaving with rice cookies and good luck ribbons from our auspicious hosts. The great navigators we are took us twenty minutes to ... read more

Thursday 4 February Up at the crack of dawn Leo takes rod and gear and moves the 15 metres to his personal Lakeside fishing deck to take the fish to task. The Thais use Float/Ground bait, dispenser method of fishing, and bread flake bait. (Many of us readers may be clueless, but hey!) With the back drop of the Misty Mountains, which had a huge white painted statue of Buddha featured Leo, with Paula as (reluctant, it must be said) assistant, spent several (blissful and engrossed) hours, soaking up the atmosphere and catching five (large and splendid) fish which would all be specimens (?) in Cyprus or the UK.Reluctantly leaving the Lake early afternoon, we lazed in the warm sunshine on our rustic veranda with Paula dozing in a hammock, reading, whilst Leo sampled a few ... read more

Day 5 Sunday - January 17 We got up real early to get a quick breakfast before Nok & Poi picked us up around 6:00 for our arrival at the foot of Wat Phra Doi Suthep, where we took part in a ceremony by giving Alms (some food, rice and drinks, etc.) to the local monks from Wat Sri Soda, a temple. We lined up alongside the road with many other people and placed the offerings in big metal bowls the saffron robed monks carry as they walk by in their bare feet. There are usually hundreds of them. There are no words exchanged. Many of them are very young, and called “novices”. Nok was very helpful by providing us with the offerings we gave. There are also many volunteers that have tables with food available ... read more
