We arrived in Koh Lanta after a rather upsetting boat trip. Once on the boat tour agents were trying to get you to buy their transfer from the port to your hotel. This was fine except 'No' was not an acceptable answer, despite various diversion tactics. It got so bad, we actually witnessed a pair of French girls being racially abused and heard others on the boat experiencing the same. To say it upset us is an understatement. This was such a shame as the Thai people in general have been lovely and friendly! Still once on Koh Lanta we escaped and got our own tuk tuk to our hotel. This was such a welcome change from the other hole we stayed in the night before on Phi Phi. We were the only guests at this ... read more

It was early in the afternoon when I finished the zip lining and my adrenaline rush was calming down. The bus rolled along the winding mountain roads of North Chiang Mai and dropped me in front of the lodge nestled in lush green trees of the tropic. Not a soul around. I slung my back pack from the shoulder and slowly walked inside the lodge. Soon I crossed the gate; I found the office room of the lodge. A lady was busy working on her paperwork. “Sawasdee Krab”, I said mildly. She looked up and returned my gesture “Sawasdee Kaa”. I love the way Thai ladies end their sentence with “kaa”….a melody dripping from the sky. My friends Alex and Oppy who operate a travel service in Chiang Mai, fixed me up the lodge. “You will ... read more

We arrived in Chiangmai minus a sewing kit and 2 bottles of water thanks to customs. Also £9 was lost after Jack accidentally spent it on a subway (oops) but was totally worth it. We decided to walk the 5k from the airport to our place 'Sarah's guest house'. It was a great way to see the city on foot even if the sweat as pouring off us! We headed straight out into the evening after checking in and explored Chiangmai's old town and market. We walked around the night market where there were loads of trinkets being sold to all f the tourists. Im particular one lad was knotting unwoven rope into dragons which was pretty cool. We had curried at one of the market places whilst watching the lady boys warming up for their ... read more

Because of fighting in northeastern Myanmar, foreigners are currently not allowed to travel through the area due to safety fears. Therefore, I had to take the long way around to get into Thailand. I was originally going to spend a couple of days in Mawlamyine en route, but when I realised I had to go to Hpa-An to get there - which was pretty close to the border - I thought I might as well head to Thailand straight away. I'd seen and been to everything I had wanted to in Myanmar. Burmese accommodation and hospitality has been about as good as I've seen on this entire trip. As well as being friendly, staff would go out of their way to meet any request you might have. Therefore I was allowed the luxury of having a ... read more

The short plane trip to the North of Thailand saw us arrive in Chang Mai for five days. The hotel was only a short trip from the airport and is of really good quality, with large spacious rooms, a good view and an awesome gym. We immediately hopped on a bike and went exploring. That night we went to the night bazaar which is a huge street market. The most reasonably priced stuff in Thailand. Then I found it. The Holy grail. Hard Rock Cafe. Finally a place to get a good steak dinner. And it didn't disappoint. The staff were lovely and we made some friends. We also enjoyed watching the live band murder some classics. After demolishing my meal and walking around, I went back there two hours later and consumed a late night ... read more

We definitely could've done with more time in Chiang Mai! We allocated five days and it's just not enough! Our first day was spent travelling and when we arrived we rented a bike from a guy with the cutest kitten! She kept biting me trying to get me to play when we were trying to check the bike. We rode to the first thing on our To Do list, Art in Paradise! Google it... it's an art museum where they have pictures that when you stand in them look 3D it's amazing!! Got a picture with a giant kitty! That evening we went to the Night Bazaar and Hard Rock for dinner, we had so much fun and bought lots of goodies! The next day I woke up feeling really sick, it was our only free ... read more

I was daunted............... The staircase rose in front of me, all the way to the top of the mountain. Was that a cloud at the pinnacle ?! It looked like a thousand stairs, but according to ' google ', only 309!! Google wouldn't mislead me, would it? We'd already braved the winding road to get there, spent half an hour searching for a parking, and made our way through hoards of people. I had to 'tackle' this ! Well, it's true. Slow and steady wins the race. We made it. GASP. I left my shoes ( and my husband ) and entered the temple. I'm not sure why he thought he needed to keep an eye on our shoes.....definitely NOT Gucci......but there you have it. He missed some beautiful sights. The photos follow. Hope you enjoy ... read more

I tend to be overly observant about modes of transportation in foreign countries. I attribute this to have a gazillion nephews. Their obsessions over the years with different vehicles, I think has led me to always notice what options are there. Chaing mai (and I think all of Thailand from what I recall of Bangkok) love their transport. There is your ordinary tuk tuk - three wheeled taxi, can take you anywhere but as it's open you probably will only go local but too far too walk. For those wanting to get adventurous with their travels even when it's still local there is motorcycles or scooters to rent. Seriously sooo many! Many of the locals use this too because it's quicker to get around in the narrower roads, especially when trying to get around all the ... read more

It's been 4 years since I've been to Asia and one big thing has changed. Free wifi is everywhere. There I was getting a foot massage (that is equivalent to about 4 bucks btw) and the parlor was giving their patrons free wifi! Every store and eating/drinking establishment offers it. And they proudly display it on their front door. It makes the tourist lifestyle simpler and a bit more connected (even if most people I now are asleep while I get my foot massage)! Let's get back to the foot massage. I'm pretty sure my plane ticket will pay for itself in massages. What would be a 100-200 dollar massage in the US, costs about 4-6 dollars. And you still can't help yourself to see if the next place will cheaper. It's no wonder that I've ... read more
