By the time I left AoNang I was so tan my reflection caught me off guard. Between the beaches of Sri Lanka and days spent sitting in a kayak in the bay of Railay Beach and Phra Nang, I've gotten a lot of sun. I feel so healthy and confident. Now I'm up north is ChiangMai. My birthday was spent in transit and settling into my new dorm. The following week was filled with a yoga retreat on the basics of the Tantra philosophy. Unfortunately the retreat fell short on my expectations (though I had tried really hard to go in without expectations). I was really looking forward to some twice a day yoga, but instead I learned about what I value in myself as a teacher and in the practices I participate in (short story: ... read more

Yesterday we drove to the city of Chiang Mai and are staying in a hostel. Before we left our last hotel, I took a shower and thought there was some lint or dirt in the shower. I went to move it and it started jumping all around the shower. I FREAKED out and thought it was some kind of giant jumping bug or something that was going to murder me. False alarm. Turns out it was a little baby frog. We had a nice shower together and then he went back to hiding in the bath mat. Once in the city, we walked around town, visited a temple and got a Thai massage. 1 hour for 7 dollars! It is quite different than what we are used to. Instead of massage tables, I had a ... read more

Today we work up to a beautiful day in Chiang Mai. We are staying about an hour outside the city. There is an elephant riding place next to where we are which is sad to see. All the elephants are chained up and even the baby elephant is tied to his mom and has to go on the rides. We opted out of the elephant rides for a more human adventure. We signed up for a Thai cooking class. It started with a trip in the back of a pick up truck through the forest to the market. We had beautiful views throughout. We shopped at the market for the food for our dishes. There were a bunch of little stalls that each containing some type of food- meat, veggies, fruit, spices, etc. We also tried ... read more

I have fallen a bit behind on blogging so I'll just do some highlights. We went to an elephant sanctuary and it was one of the best days ever. The elephants are such amazing loving creatures. We got to feed them, make them their natural medicine to help their digestion, and wash them. They get right into the river with us and laid down so we could scrub them. They said when the elephants arrived they had worms under their skin they had to pop out like zits everyday. Lots of elephant places use plastic brushes to scrub them and the worms keep coming back. There they took a vine, split it into pieces then smashed them to make them soft. When you soak them in the water they foam up naturally and get soapy. Apparently ... read more

Well - the saga continues. We have left the truck at the border, technically in Myanmar but actually parked in Thailand, and travelled by minibus to Chiang Mai where we are staying for 4 nights. Because of Chinese coming into Thailand and buying goods duty free and taking them back to China the Thai authorities have banned all non-Thai vehicles from entering the country. We are now waiting to see what can be done and if we can get a special permit to use the truck. In the meantime we had a couple of hours to pack all our belongings and leave the truck. Needless to say there is some stuff that we have left behind that we may have considered taking with us but had no time. I have left a bag I had already ... read more

Today our great bnb host sky took us on an adventure to the temple Doi Suthep. We traveled there in the back of their truck and stopped at a few view points for pictures. It was pretty packed with tourists but was very beautiful. ... read more

We had one relaxing, boring day around our hostel so I blended the days. Is crazy how markets pop up in different parts of the city. Today we went to a new air bnb. It is adorable, Trigo house. The hosts are absolutely fantastic and helpful and it is one of the coolest fun houses I've ever seen. There is a little swing inside, really cool design features aND an adorable little puppy named Belly. Had some fun sitting around a table with some people from China, France, UK, and USA. We ended the night with heading to a lady boy show with our new friends from around the world and what a show that was. Sorry for the bad photo quality... read more

Such a cool city this Chiang Mai is. There is a different sort of market around every block. Lots of sketchy electrical work around the city. We checked into a hostel for about $3.80 each a night. Mostly just walked around the city today. Another "taking it easy day" of walking 23 km. Legs are now jello. ... read more

So whilst we were in Chiang Mai we noticed there were plenty of opportunities to get out of this city and do some new activities. We agreed we would pick one activity each and the other had to do it. So i browsed around and found a Thai Farm cookery school, Alex wasn't exactly enthused by the idea but we made a deal and he had to agree. So Alex presents his activity, jungle trekking. . . a nice walk through the jungle, staying in a bamboo hut... he was winning me over and I agreed. I mean after all, it is just a long hike . . . we hike a lot at home... how hard could it be? It was a rainy day in Chiang Mai but do not let the rain fool you ... read more
