Last night I was able to sleep the whole night through! I woke up at 6:45am still feeling tired, but at least I got some sleep. My body is slowly adjusting to the time change. The weather is really nice in the morning and evenings, but the afternoons are very bright and hot. Breakfast this morning was a rice and chicken soup, fried dough with a sweet glaze, and a banana. The banana’s and clementines here taste different than what I’m used to. Its probably because the fruit is fresh and they don't use pesticides. The fried dough is called “bunny bunny" and tastes like funnel cake. After breakfast we joined the Thai nursing students for morning ceremony, which felt like a mix between Messiah’s chapel and summer camp morning meetings. Everyone stood in lines and repeated ... read more

Today was Monday and our first day attending the morning ceremony and having formal orientations with the BCNC staff and NKP hospital. We met with our buddies before we walked over and the warm welcome they give us and talking about our morning and not much about the fact they had to study and do homework after the festival and stayed up consequently. I felt awkward at the morning ceremony as we tried to follow along with the routine without understanding Thai but that was okay. One or two students lead the group in the “chants” toward the King’s mother and namesake of the school, to Buddha and Buddhism, and to the school itself. When we faced the flag and two students raised it, I enjoyed that sing-song chant and the flow of it. We learned ... read more

January 6th WHOA. Today was our day to relax, however, we went all over the country (or that's how it seemed). After getting a full 4 hours of sleep (thanks jet lag), we woke up to an amazing breakfast of pork barbecue on a stick and sticky rice. I'm not one for morning meat, but I'd definitely eat that again and again. After breakfast, we ate lunch. FOOD ALL THE TIME. We had pad thai and mango and sticky rice with coconut milk on top. There was also coconut juice that was dyed blue from flowers. It was absolutely beautiful. (And Hope, if you're reading this, the pad thai was actually my favorite and it wasn't super peanut-y--you would have loved it and I thought of you the whole time I got the second helping.) After ... read more

Today I woke up at 0630 AM and felt wide awake! I was ready to go and start the day because in American time it would be 0630 at night. After waking up and putting on my new flowy Thai pants, I went down and ate breakfast which was fried chicken, sticky rice, and snowballs (dumplings with pork and custard in them, they were very good!) The fried chicken may have been the best I have ever had! We left with our buddies after breakfast and took the long winding road to the temple. At the top of the mountain was the temple and we had to climb over 300 stairs to get to the top!! It was exhausting, and I do not think my Thai buddies liked it very much, but we eventually got to ... read more

Sawasdee kah, Last night I woke up at 4:30am and could not fall back asleep. Greg said that’s just jet lag and it should get better. I hope he’s right because I need to sleep so I can have energy. Today was a very busy and tiring day. I visited the Doi Sutep temple, Royal gardens, and the Red Cross Winter Festival. I tried a lot of new foods, and I enjoyed most of them! For breakfast I had fried garlic chicken and dumplings which were delicious. For lunch we ate out at a food court. Brielle and I split a noodle chicken stir fry and two fruit smoothies. Then all of our Thai buddies started bringing us different foods to try. I tried a fried banana, mango sticky rice, and shaved ice with gelatin pieces ... read more

Today was another day on our own with our Thai buddies, whom I feel we are getting to know much better. I can see some of the Messiah students really engaging with their Thai buddies, yet it frustrates me to see other making much less of an effort and staying with their fellow MC students. Oh well, this trip will be what we make it and how connected and engaged we are. We began the day medicated on Dramamine as we drove up the winding roads to the doi suthep temple. On the way there, we made a stop at a road side scenic look out which had many vendors. It dawned on me that these vendors make food and sell items just for the tourists and visitors; this is how they make their living. I ... read more

Today I got up around 9 am and went down to eat breakfast. We ate pork and sticky rice which was delicious! After breakfast I got ready and went down to spend some time with my Thai buddies: Noon and Jha. We spent time getting to know each other and I asked them a lot of questions about school and about life in Thailand, and about their families. They both told me they are only children and throughout the day I heard a lot of the Thai buddies talking about how they are only children too. I think this is an interesting feature of their culture because in the United States it can be somewhat uncommon to find a family with only one child. After talking the Thai buddies left and we went down to eat ... read more

January 4th-5th Today was the longest day of my life. I was pretty nervous to fly for 15 hours (and then a quick 6), seeing as the longest flight I had ever been on was only 4 hours long. I have also never been out of the country so this was a big day for me. The flight itself was not bad at all, however I do have a broken rib (thanks Jake and mom), which added some fun times. I made sure to get up and walk and stretch at least 3 times (but I’m still swollen). We landed in South Korea Friday night and that was quite an experience. The airport was giant and futuristic looking with glass windows everywhere. Everyone was on a mission. We quickly ate dinner and Em and I chose ... read more

Hello, Today was our first full day in Thailand. We woke up and ate a traditional Thai breakfast, which included pork kabobs, purple sticky rice, and fruit. In Thailand breakfast foods are no different than lunch and dinner foods. So pork, chicken, beef and rice are all fair game. After breakfast our buddies met up with us, and we had some time to get to know one another. The biggest “challenge” right now is communication. Oil and Nu don’t know much english and I don’t speak much Thai. A lot of laughter and smiles have been exchanged when we can’t understand one another. This helps to keep the mood light and fun. For lunch we had Pad Thai, green papaya salad, coconut rice with fresh mango. It was delicious! My favorite meal so far. the words ... read more

We embraced the day after sleeping in and eating a delicious breakfast of pork skewers, purple sticky rice and fruit; so far, my favorite breakfast! I love being able to eat salad and meat for breakfast. All the ingredients are so fresh and juicy; I can’t stop tasting and trying new things. I realize I am not afraid to try new things and be adventurous! One of the things that has been the most frustrating and confusing things so far was the money exchange, switching US dollars to Baht. We were dropped off at a bank and had not much help. It was a learning experience for us and our buddies, to together figure out how to communicate and exchange with the bank tellers. The bank I was redirected to made all of us students combine ... read more
