Just 250 years ago Ayutthaya was the biggest city in the world with a million inhabitants, it was a huge trading centre and any trading nation worth its salt would have had offices and interests there, the city was said to rival anything seen in Europe at the time. Then in 1767 the Burmese came and totally sacked the city leaving it in ruins and causing the capitol to be moved to Bangkok. I didn't have the earliest of starts, still feeling the effects of the night flight, but still had all the afternoon to explore the temple ruins before catching the night train to Chiang mai at 19:45. First stop was Wat Rachaburana, built by an Ayutthayan king to house the ashes of his two elder brothers who had fought to the death in a ... read more

Rob Writes As Take That were descending on Bangkok it was time to get out of there pronto. Truth be told though, as Tina mentioned, no hotel would have us. As we had hoped on staying a further night in Bangkok I hadn’t done much research on the best method to get out and onto our destination. We knew we wanted to go to Ayutthaya and I had briefly read about a bus which goes from the Victory Tower monument, but that was it really, that was all I knew. Fortunately Victory Tower had a BST station right next to it so we jumped on the train outside of our hotel and got off there. On exiting the Victory Monument station we were presented with minibuses alright... loads of them, everywhere. We had no idea which ... read more

My time in Kanchanaburi ended with a breakfast sit in at After Dawn cafe, which has a gallery of Kwai bridge art work, chilling before it was time to go to get the bus. I'd actually missed the last seat of the day's only minibus to Ayutthaya and had thought ah bugger that's usual me. But I asked around and found another way to Ayutthaya on two local buses - having known, I'd have chosen this way, it was cheap and comfortable and easy. On walking down to the bus station, a motorbike taxi pulled up and offered to take me and big bag down, it was a half hour walk but I said, certainly I thought, that my bag was too heavy for the bike!.. But a blink forward and big bag, average height me, ... read more

Geo: 14.344, 100.561Ayutthaya is an old capital of the country and lots of tempels remain, some of them in better shape than others. Best way to explore them is on bike so that's what we did today. Saw only a few due to the hot weather, around 40°C or maybe even more in the sun.We had dinner at the food market for about 5€, it tasted better than what we had yesterday... read more

Geo: 14.344, 100.561Today we didn't do all that much. Went to the British war cemetry and to the Burmese Thai railway museum close by. Both very interesting, also 'cause a lot of forced (if you don't work for us, we cut off your hands) Asian workers died, constructing the railway, almost 50% of them.In the afternoon we took a mini bus to Ayutthaya where we were dropped at the hotel, something that doesn't happen that often.... read more

Well, it was day 2 in Thailand and we had some big plans. After our initial 16 hours in Bangkok we wanted to do an overnight trip on the train to Kanchanaburi - better known for the bridge over the river Kwai. An old classic movie with this title and it seemed worth the effort to visit since we love doing the things normal tourists don't do. I read there was some gorgeous scenery, but for me it was really more about the train ride (which apparently is an experience since you are pretty crammed-in) where you get to hang out with the locals. We were up early (I think the people at the B&B were a little offended that we were in such a rush, but none-the-less we still managed to get through a full ... read more

The second part of my trip was Ayuttaya, the old capital of Thailand before the Burmese invaded and destroyed it in 1767. The city was abandoned for the next 150 years and the current city is surrounded by impressive ruins. First though, I checked into the Hotel Kantary where my friend was Jamie was staying while she worked there for the week. I arrived around 1pm and they still had not cleaned the room, so I figured I would head to town. The reception desk recommended the Floating Market and provided me with my first tuk tuk ride. He was quite nice and we arranged for him to pick me up at 3:30. The market was not really a floating market, per Thai standards, as all the shops were on the walkways and not on boats. ... read more

Today my friend and I had a one day trip at Ayutthaya. We started our trip from Bangkok on 8.30 am and arrived at Ayutthaya around 10.00 am. The first place that we went to was KhongKong Market. After we had arrived, we were striving so we bought Vietnamese stuffed crispy omelet (ka-nom beuang yuan) in 40 baht which is a recommended food in this market. In my opinion, its taste was very good. After that we ate Miang Pla Nhem which I had never tried before and its tastes good as its look . Before we went to the next market, we ended up with wandering around the market and tasting Thai desserts which were Ka-nom Tuay and Tong Muan. In normally, we usually eat a crispy Tong Muan but at this time we tried ... read more

After stuffing my face with a huge breakfast I headed out for a full days exploring. Ayutthaya is completely surrounded by a river so easy not to get too lost. Deciding to walk for a bit in the direction of the tourist information centre, but knowing that it was a little too far to walk all the way opted for a motorbike taxi - who only charged me 20baht to complete my journey. Picking up a much better map of the city and a train timetable for the next couple of days I headed out. Walking 5 minutes and quickly passing an elephant camp seeing them chained up and ferrying tourists back and forth leaves me feeling a little uncomfortable. So heading past this I made it to wang luang ( the royal palace) which from ... read more

One place that has been on our Thailand must see list was Ayutthaya - An ancient capital up until the 18th century before it was burned and ransacked by the Burmese. It's about 2 hour train ride from Bangkok then a 2min boat ride from the mainland. After paying for our 3rd class tickets 20baht/40p each we briefly got talking to another British couple Harry and Jazz. Also at the start of their round the world trip, we soon realised we were taking similar trips. Once arriving in Ayutthaya, we paired up with this couple again and chatted excitedly about our previous/current trips and our lives back home as we set off to explore the site together. Across an area of 14 sq kilometres, this site contains a mixture of stupas, temples and headless buddhas. With ... read more
