To see all pictures be sure to scroll all the way down -- there are 10 pictures in this posting. Today's visit was to Damnoen Saduak floating market in Ratchaburi via a boat ride (think Venice minus the romance or glamour) through the market area. After several traffic jams (boat jams) we disembarked and shopped till we dropped (sort of). Vendors everywhere, snakes to hold and much activity. This is where the locals purchase fresh fruits, vegetables and fish for the day as well as articles of clothing and souvenirs for tourists. Another bus trip included discovery stops to learn about salt production and later, to the collection and production of palm sugar, coconut milk and other palm tree related products. A home visit was included where we were able to explore a family's living quarters. ... read more

Overwhelmed really. Bangkok was terrifying at first. Overwhelming. Within the first hour I thought I had made the biggest mistake. Traffic craze. Motorcycles riding next to you on the pavement as if they were pedestrians. Red traffic lights being treated as mere suggestions. The full chaos of it all. So I went to sleep. When I woke up I thought I'd grow a pair. I got a taxi to democracy monument. From there I walked around Bangkok, and slowly but surely learned about its transport network and how to navigate the place. Suffice it to say that on my second day in Bangkok I was zipping from attraction to attraction. Good times. From there I got the train to ayutthaya. In evening I got a boat ride to the temples off the island. Truly stunning. Today ... read more

We took a local train from Bangkok to Ayutthaya. This was incredibly crowded as well as being incredibly cheap; so Fred (being a perfect gentleman) stood up to give a lady carrying a baby, who got on half way there, his seat. Journey was 1 and half hours. There were ladies walking up and down selling sliced fruit and cold drinks all the while. We were glad to get off at Ayutthaya, (which used to be the capitol of Siam), and eat, then check in at our guesthouse. This was a perfect place to stay being only 2 minutes walk from the station and having a lovely welcoming ambience. The building is an antique teak wooden thai style house backing onto the river. There is a nice restuarant tacked onto the back, and a ferry to ... read more

What a full day we had today! We were up at 6:15 this morning, had breakfast in the hotel, then our guide picked us up for our day tour to Bang Pa-In and Ayutthaya. It took about an hour or so to drive out of Bangkok to Bang Pa-In, which is the Royal summer residence. It was built mostly in the 1800s by King Rama V, who was interested in European style architecture. It is still used occasionally today. You can see from the pictures we were lucky with the weather again. It was a beautiful sunny day. The Royal summer residence is beautiful, with many different styles of buildings, in a lovely park-like setting. From Bang Pa-In we drove to Ayutthaya, which was the former capital of Siam, founded 1350. It is mostly ruins today, ... read more

After our nightmare with taxis the previous day we were already over Bangkok so we decided to get out of town. On the advice of a taxi driver we crossed the main road outside our hotel and tried to catch a taxi to Bang Sue train station where we planned on catching a train to Ayuthaya - the old capital city of Thailand. We tried and failed three times to get a taxi driver to use the meter. I slammed the door shut on the third one in frustration and Jo casually pointed out that I would probably have been better just leaving it open! Our fourth attempt was successful and we joined the 12 million population of Bangkok in the early morning rush hour. We were in the cab for almost an hour to go ... read more

Ayutthaya, also spelled Ayudhya, was a Siamese kingdom that existed from 1351 to 1767. Ayutthaya was friendly towards foreign traders, including the Chinese, Vietnamese (Annamese), Indians, Japanese and Persians, and later the Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch and French, permitting them to set up villages outside the walls of the capital, also called Ayutthaya. In the sixteenth century, it was described by foreign traders as one of the biggest and wealthiest cities in the East. The court of King Narai (1656–88) had strong links with that of King Louis XIV of France, whose ambassadors compared the city in size and wealth to Paris. By 1550, the kingdom's vassals included some city-states in the Malay Peninsula, Sukhothai, and parts of Cambodia. In foreign accounts, Ayutthaya was called Siam, but many sources say the people of Ayutthaya called themselves Tai, ... read more

Recently a work trip took me to Bangkok. I flew there on a Saturday morning and held a training at Don Mueang Airport in the north of Bangkok in the afternoon. I decided to use the Sunday for some sightseeing. So in the morning after a quick swim in the pool and breakfast a driver picked me up from the hotel and drove me to Ayutthaya, the city north of Bangkok that used to be the capital of the Ayutthaya Kingdom from the 14th to the 18th century. The city became increasingly powerful and eventually, in the 15th century, took over the power from Angkor. It expanded across the region, but then was defeated by the Burmese in the late 18th century. It is located on an island surrounded by the Chao Phraya River, just 45 ... read more

Coucou.

Lol!
