Day 2 - Wednesday 6 September After breakfast, we met our driver Perera from Tangerine Tours who drove us to Muthurajawela Wetlands which is north of Colombo. We drove along the main toll highway for approx. an hour, watching the other side of the road which was chock-a-block full of cars with workers driving into Colombo. We were pleased we were driving the other way. However, on our return to Colombo, we were amongst the 100s of cars. We turned off the main road, onto a very narrow lane and soon arrived at the boat centre which was also an interpretive centre for the Muthurajawela Sanctuary. Muthurajawela is a marsh the southern region of the Negombo lagoon, 30 km north of Colombo. The Muthurajawela Marshes are 7,580 acres in area and the country's largest saline coastal ... read more

... read more

HE SAID... Today we were travelling north from Colombo to Negombo. We woke at 6:30am, which was remarkably early given the music from Colombo’s Street Food Festival played well into the early hours on the street outside our hotel. We used the remaining hours in our hotel room to catch up on our writing, as we were checking out at midday, grabbing some lunch close by and then travelling by Uber to Negombo, the start of our next Sri Lankan journey. We headed out for a late breakfast and found ourselves at Heladiv Tea Club in the Old Dutch Hospital courtyard for the second morning in a row. I opted for toast, jam, fresh pineapple juice and tea, while Ren went for the French toast, fresh mango juice and tea. The food was great, although Ren’s ... read more

HE SAID... We’d arrived in Negombo at 11pm the night before, after a mammoth road trip from Kandy that took us south to Bogawantalawa and then north-west to this touristy beach town. We were exhausted, so we quickly scouted the streets outside our hotel (Rani Beach Resort) before crashing in our room. To describe our accommodation as a resort was stretching the truth just a little too far. It did have a pool and it was located on a beach, but that’s where its so-called ‘resort’ features ended. Maybe we were in an old wing – who knows? Anyway, enough about Rani Beach Resort. It was a place to stay, somewhere to eat. We had no idea where we were, or what Negombo was like, so we had a day of exploration ahead of us. We ... read more

We left Kandy on the early morning (6.15am) train which meant the stunning view over the first hour of the three hour trip had clear light with a nice misty covering. The descent is only about 400m but from the train you can see the taller mountains off to the south. We had booked our last night at a beach resort close to the airport , Negombo. Colombo airport is in the middle of a runway resurface. I read in the local paper this hasn't been done since 1986 and if it wasn't completed in 2017 then they would loose their accreditation to land International flights. This means the airport is closed from 8.00am to 4.30pm. Our flight back to India was scheduled for 3.00am! Negombo is a beach side tourist hang out so had some ... read more

Our flights began on Saturday night so motze Shabbat was a scramble to clean up and close the suitcases and start on our family trip to Sri Lanka. Caroline was already on her way from Manchester to Dubai when we checked in at Ben Gurion airport. Our first flight was to Bangkok. We took off on time and I slept for most of the way. We landed on time and then sat in the lounge for seven hours waiting for our second flight to Colombo. The plane was late coming in and so we were an hour late taking off. We had been told that Thai airlines was a great airline. Well the hostess uniforms were beautiful and that was as far as it went. The kosher meal was a grey looking chicken dish on rice. ... read more

Geo: 7.20934, 79.8341We've had a great 2 weeks in Sri Lanka! The first week was manic as we had to fit in so many things in a short amount of time but we did it! So... Firstly we took a 5 hour train to dambulla cave temple which is a buddhist temple carved into and out of a mountain. We had to climb quite a few stairs in order to get there in the blistering heat but it was pretty cool once we got there! Then we rushed to Sigirya or 'lion rock' to (again) climb the stairs to the ancient palace ruins at the top and to see probably the most spectacular sunset/ view we have ever seen. The next day we travelled another few hours to Kandy where the following day we got on ... read more

Relaxing, resting, recovering from the jet-lag, acclimatising to the hot (34c) & humid weather and generally having a good time is the order of the day, at a beach hotel in Negombo on the West coast of Sri Lanka, prior to setting off on a "round the island tour". Colombo was an interesting city - we were slightly surprised by the numerous well maintained old colonial buildings, wide tree-lined streets and busy but not chaotic traffic. On a day trip to Colombo we chanced upon a noisy colourful ceremony in a Hindu Temple - chanting, banging of drums and smoke - while, in comparison, the Buddhist Temple was quiet with many Buddha statues and praying monks. Old Colombo, down by the port, was a maze of busy narrow colourful streets, small shops and a lively atmosphere. ... read more

Our Sri Lanka Adventure over the Chinese New Year 2016 The Chinese people are expected to travel back to their homes over the Chinese New Year. This is the largest migration of people at any one time, and it makes for interesting travel. Flights must be booked at least 6 months ahead of time, train tickets sell out and hotels are full. Sri Lanka, prior to 1972 known as Ceylon, lies just off the Southeast coast of India. According to Wikipedia, it has a documented history spanning 3,000 years, with evidence of pre-historic human settlements dating back to at least 125,000 years. Its geographic location and deep harbours made it of great strategic importance from the time of the ancient Silk Road through to World War ll. It lies only 18 miles from India and is ... read more
