One of my fondest memories of Sri Lanka is having breakfast on the veranda of an old tea planter’s bungalow with the immaculately kept garden in front of us and the tea plantations starting at the end of the lawn. I remember the dew on the grass in the morning, the warm pancake bread (because that is what I used to call it in those days), the butter melting on it, the smells. When I grew older I always thought that the pancake bread probably was naan, roti, chappati or some other type of Indian bread, and I was a bit disappointed that when I arrived in India the taste of the naan or the other breads didn't bring back any memories. After this I thought perhaps that the way they prepared the naan, roti or ... read more

Spend yesterday in Amman. Done the tourist city tour...culture, shopping and all that in the morning. Afternoon was spent in the bar with some Al-types who were off on a suicide mission to Bagdad. Lovely place apparently! So by the time we had to go to the airport, I was slaughtered on 20$ a can Amstel Lager (paid for by some security firm!). Finally arrived in Negombo half six this morning, sri lankan time, not that that means anything to my brain at the moment. Slept for a few hours and are now chilling in the heat with the biggest worry being where to get mosquito coils. People are well friendly here, and I am sort off disappointed of not being able to pick a fight with any hustler. ... read more

This was my second trip to the Island of Sri Lanka, in July 2006. I arrived on a Singapore Airlines flight from Singapore in the late evening. You can obtain a 30 day Visa upon arrival at the airport in Colombo. It was hot and VERY VERY humid. I took a cabbie from Colombo's Bandaranaike Int'l Airport in the North of Colombo to the suburb of Bambalapitiya near the West Coast to the Ottery Tourist Inn Hostel, taxi cost appx. us $15. I stayed for one month this past trip to Sri Lanka. The locals are reserved but nonetheless friendly. I spoke with many people about the Tsunami that struck Sri Lanka in late 2005, it is somenthing they will never forget, and I too since that was my first trip to Sri Lanka during the ... read more

I arrived home on Saturday 19th November and I am booked to leave the UK again on Sunday 27th November. I had a good few days at home catching up with friends and family and sleep. My sleeping pattern has been strange since I returned. I keep waking at about 06.00 and feeling tired by about 16.00. My pictures have come out fantastic. Seeing them on a 17” computer screen is a real treat. I have been feeling very tired this week. Currently I have absolutely no energy. Maybe it is my body subliminally creating the energy reserves I am likely to need in the next four weeks. As the departure date draws nearer I am feeling very excited about this trip. I think it will be rewarding and adventurous to travel independently for the first ... read more
