Arrived very late into Colombo (5 am by Qld clock) and transferred to our nearby costal starting point at the Lavinia Hotel Negombo. Negombo is a low key fishing village and a popular beach alternative to the bustling capital city of Colombo. Had a short but sound sleep but then lay awake waiting for the late winter sun to rise with the muezzin’s call to prayer announcing a new day. Next day was a casual adjustment for time & travel with a long morning walk to a thriving fish market taking in the local scene and atmosphere before returning by a beautiful beach front. Middle of the day is incredibly hot. We finished the day with an evening briefing and meet-up with the rest of the group. The tour has 15 riders supported by a guide, ... read more

We were up and out of the hotel by the crack of dawn (I’m talking 6am) and at Ella train station. We were finally going to sample the world famous Sri Lankan railway system. We were travelling from Ella to Nuno Oya, which we were told was he most beautiful part of the journey, and the early time meant that whilst there were lots of tourists, there were substantially less than there would have been at half 9 which was the next available train. It may have been the early start coupled with the colossus of yesterdays expedition, but the train journey itself was a mixed bag. I will sum it up like so. The Good: 1. I know it’s a repetitive thing for Sri Lanka but again the journey itself is beautiful, it doesn’t really ... read more

I’ve been a bit grumpy today, the swimming pool has done my ears in (I’m long suffering with ear troubles, as family and friends will well know, but I wasn’t not going to go in the pool on the beach. Simple as.) I also managed to hit myself in the head with the shower door and now have a small mark on the top right of my forehead, hidden just beneath the hair line. Excellent. When I woke at 8.30am Meg was already up, and out for a jog and a swim, returning shortly after. After our packing and ensuring that our baggage was aeroplane friendly, we put our luggage in the hotel hold and went out to source breakfast. A “Full English Breakast” consists of 2 grilled mini hot dogs, 2 pieces of grilled toast, ... read more

So here ends my 17 night stay at the Cinnamon Grand. Now I have one night up the coast in Negombo, then back here for 3 nights over the weekend before heading off into the Up Country. Last night I made the slight intestinal error of eating in the food court in the basement of the Crescat Mall, a set plate of prawns (tiny and unshelled, just had to crunch my way through them), rice, vegetables, omelette and other stuff for 350r. It was tasty but maybe unwise. I thought I’d risk it as I wasn't working today. At least the price wasn’t inflated by 25 per cent as it is in the hotel, for tax and service charge. At breakfast the Fly Man materialised. He’s the blurry one in the photo carrying a tennis racket. ... read more

One day you're preparing for your trip and the next day you're packing again and saying goodbye already... My two months holidays in Poland with the kids had gone by way too quick... Grant, on his own at home in Christchurch, surviving the winter by the log burner, would probably disagree... Still it was time for me and the kids to head back to the world’s end, to get back home... One more stop before going back to New Zealand though – a small holiday for the four of us in a country none of us has ever been to... Two (hopefully) blissful weeks in Sri Lanka! Now only to get there on my own with two kids, to get there mentally sane that is and Grant would hopefully take over from there... As usual I ... read more

So after my 16 hour travel, I finally made it to Sri Lankan. First stop for me on day one is to Negombo, lovely fisherman’s towns which is popular with tourists. I caught an airport taxi to my hotel / hut, Lanka Huts on Beach Road. It took me around 20minutes to get and I was dying to have a long hot shower. When I arrived, I was amazed by my hut. Beach and ocean views and you can step out onto the beach, charming and beautiful to watch the waves. The hotel had a lovely bed as shower and all you can need. Staff and owners were so friendly and welcoming and would be there to offer any support you needed. They helped me get a local Sri Lankan sim which is needed when you’re ... read more

We have booked flights to Colombo via Singapore but our first plane has been cancelled, meaning an earlier flight and a 9 hour layover in Singapore. One last attempt to liberate our laundry - thankfully it is open. She looks as relieved to get her hands on our dollars as we are to get our clothes back. Then off to the airport for our first flight. We are seated separately because the plane is full of school groups. I sit next to an Australian teacher accompanying students who have been doing voluntary work. He tells me how they have taken disabled kids swimming, brought gifts for orphans and sung with blind children. It makes my sightseeing followed by cocktails feel rather shallow. Passengers transiting Singapore are offered a free 2 ½ hour city tour. So we ... read more

Woolly says – Having spent the night trying not to sneeze any further and under threat from Jo that grave injury would occur to my trunk if I splatted anyone else with my germs I awoke with a mussy head but a high level of determination to enjoy the day. Having made arrangements yesterday to have our first tuk tuk ride I was ready at the gate a little bit early…….. Make that four hours early! Woolly says - ……… after a lengthy wait my chariot hove into view, a cute green tuk tuk driven by our new friend Sham. Before I could get myself comfortable we shot down the road and into the streams of traffic, chaos, total chaos, as we sped past bikes and scooters and screeched into the smallest spaces I could feel ... read more

Woolly says – Christmas had passed, and my Aston Martin seems to have got lost at the North Pole, I have sent a quick email to Santa to get him to look into it, Jo says I should be happy with all the presents I got ….. what does she know! Father Christmas had also bought Zoe a cold, she lay in a pathetic heap sniffing and coughing everywhere before very unkindly passing it to me and Jo for a Boxing day treat. Getting onto a flight with a streaming cold wasn’t the best, as we settled into our seats the mammoth sneezed, twice, covering several rows in front of us and the stewardess who was passing by, everyone looked at us, I sneezed into yet another tissue and tried to look apologetic through my streaming ... read more
