If you’re looking for the best beaches in Sri Lanka, your search is over! They are all located without a shadow of a doubt in the Tangalla area. The water’s so blue and when the sun shines above, the ocean turns emerald and turquoise. And there’s a beach for everyone. The Tangalla coastline conceals secrets beaches and coves. There are kilometers of soft sand where you can walk for hours and not see a single other tourist (Rekawa Beach), stretches where turtles come lay their eggs at night, or simply more popular beaches with fun and convenient little shacks that serve grilled fish, curry and cold drinks on the sand. We found great accommodation at Peacock Family Stay (booking.com) right by the Rekawa Lagoon. We seriously had the entire beach to ourselves. We could see a ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were travelling south-west from Yala National Park to Mirissa. We woke late at 6:30am, quickly organised our packs and headed to breakfast in the hotel’s open air restaurant at 7:30am. With little time to spare I gobbled a couple of egg hoppers (thin crispy rice flour and coconut crepes cooked in a mini-wok, with an egg in the centre) with seeni sambol (caramelised onion relish), and they were fantastic. I also managed to grab a mixed fruit juice, tea, fresh pineapple and some crepes that had been rolled into a thin tube with a jaggery (Sri Lankan palm sugar) and coconut filling. We left our hotel (Oak Ray Lake Lodge) at 8am and started our journey towards Mirissa. After only 15 minutes on the road we stopped at the dwelling of a ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were travelling south-east from Bandarawela to Yala National Park. We woke late, and after slowly gathering ourselves together, we headed to the hotel’s open air balcony for breakfast. I was feeling a little under the weather from way too much arrack the night before, but it wasn’t enough to stop me enjoying a plate of hoppers (thin crispy rice flour and coconut crepes cooked in a mini-wok), pol sambol (shredded coconut with onions, chilli and lime), chickpeas and boiled eggs. With a focus on rehydration, I refreshed myself with quite a few watermelon juices and cups of tea. We left our hotel in the hills of Bandarawela after breakfast (around 9am) and began our journey out of the Hill Country and towards the southern coastline. We snaked our way through the majestic ... read more

Having learnt a little about Sri Lanka and its culture and history on my first three days in the country, it was now time to make my way back towards Colombo via a much more comfortable bus ride than my first one in Sri Lanka, to the town of Hikkaduwa for a bit of R&R - or so I thought - by hitting the main reason why holidaymakers come to Sri Lanka; its beaches. And the reason why things weren't necessarily going to be relaxing was the fact that things were most probably going to be boozy. After all, it was my birthday and I was to meet up with Tom and Alex - two Brits I had originally met in Goa and then again in Hampi, where we enjoyed some good, non-alcoholic times. Thus it ... read more

The only things I really knew about Sri Lanka before going there was that it was once called Ceylon (when the British ruled there), that the country produces a lot of tea and I knew a fair bit about their cricket team. Old playing legends such as Aravinda da Silva, Aruna Ranatunga and Chaminda Vaas, and newer ones such as Muttiah Muralitharan, Kumar Sangakkara and Tillekaratne Dilshan. But other than that, I knew nothing about where I was going to go and what I was going to see there. After a day's research back in Chennai, I then had a rough plan of how I was going to spend my two weeks in Sri Lanka. But before getting on a plane for the first time since arriving in India in Delhi, I had one last taste ... read more

At 5:15 am Kumar our driver for the day came to collect us from the hotel to drive us to Mirissa where we were going to board our boat for our trip out to sea looking for whales. Even at this time of day market stalls were open and people were walking about going about their business. We drove and drove through the dark until after about an hour we reached Mirissa. The entrance to the port was a single track road and there were tourist buses trying to get into the port and of course there were drivers trying to leave the port at the same time! Eventually we got to a car park and then Kumar walked us down to the boat. At the boat we had to leave our name and nationality (scary). ... read more

Aditya Resort is on the coast road just past the village of Hikkaduwa and before Rathgama in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka about 13 km north of Galle. We had booked 5 nights at this all-suites seaside resort as a relaxation vacation after all our touring. When initially planning our family holiday Don and I had thought about spending a few days in the Seychelles or Mauritius after Caroline left Sri Lanka to return to her job. The flight connections seemed more trouble than they were worth, and Jagath promised that we would not be disappointed simply to stay in Sri Lanka and enjoy a rest there. We found he was certainly right! When we woke up and looked out of the window we could see the garden which was a luscious green, then the ... read more

The astrologer in Rishikesh told me I should hang out with and feed dogs, so I ran with it and accepted an opportunity to go to Sri Lanka with an almost stranger to volunteer at an animal shelter for a week. Plans had changed once again (I'm starting to get used to this) and Orion and I have been split up for a few weeks while he is in Nepal. I joined a German Buddhist (who has doubled as my bodyguard) to Midigama in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. It was definitely the most spontaneous plans I've ever made (aside from jumping in the car for a random weekend camping trip), as Orion gave me notice of his new plans and then 24 hours later I was buying my new flight. Another 48 hours and ... read more
