Utrolig flott arkitektur i kolonistil. Alt det gamle er befart, men samtidig masse små butikker og kafeer. Veldig koselig. Når vi gikk derfra kommer det opp en mann til oss og brøler: Hallooo, remember me from yesterday? Me making food for you. Did you like the food?

Men hun ... read more

So enjoyed a couple of days in Marissa, probably the most tourist orientated place so far. Massive bay, sandy beach stretching all the way, with bars and restaurants lining the sand. Distinctive south east Asia beach feel about it. Absolutely massive waves crashing onto the beach at all times of the day! Not to be trifled with. Tried diving through one only to be spun around washing machine style. Soon figured out the technique but pretty sketchy either way! Wandered around the other bays and went to an amazing look out next to a temple. Bit lazy with the picture taking at the mo though. Next time! Decided to get a move on though and get a very quick bus to Weligama, couple of k's down the road. Managed to jump off at the dive centre, ... read more

Geo: 6.0334, 80.2184So glad we have a driver! Sanjeewa arrived as we checked out of Casa Colombo and drove us to Galle (pronounced Gawl). The distances look short on the map but the traffic is horrendous especially after a holiday weekend. The buses of which there seem to be hundreds are all hail and ride so they stop at a moment's notice without signalling. Then there are loads of tuk-tuks weaving in and out as well as motorbikes and scooters. It took 3 hours to get to Galle. We are staying at the Tamarind Hill hotel- another 200 year old Dutch mansion which only has about 10 bedrooms and 2 suites and twice as many staff. We were greeted with cold towels and herbal tea then shown to room 10 off the courtyard- very nice and ... read more

Mirissa was a fast and frantic three hour bus journey. Actually the bus only went to Matara and from there we got a tuk tuk to our hotel, the url=http://www.booking.com/hotel/lk/edelweiss-resort.en-gb.html?aid=356984;label=gog235jc-hotel-XX-lk-edelweissNresort-unspec-es-com-L%3Aen-O%3Aunk-B%3Aunk-N%3AXX-S%3Abo;sid=93e3540c26c43e43079ac95eb8c01b3d;dcid=4;dist=0;type=total&Edelweiss Resort. We got off to a stuttering start but we think it's because the guy on the hotel desk didn't speak English too well. It turned out he couldn't find our reservation because he was looking under February! He asked if we wanted to upgrade to a seafront room but when we said no to paying an extra $10 a night he upgraded us anyway. It turned out to be a great hotel and we were reluctant to leave in the end. It was just so relaxing chilling out by the pool whilst watching and hearing the ocean's huge ... read more

A breathtaking bus journey took us all the way from the highlands of tea country down to the tropical lowlands of Yala National Park. We stayed in a wonderful guest house just outside the town of Tissa. The staff could not do enough for us and we highly recommend staying at The River Front if you visit the area. From there we decided to walk in to Tissa to find somewhere to eat. Ignoring the recommendation of walking along the main road, we chose the minor road through the countryside. What a delight it was to walk next to the paddy fields and see all the wildlife there. Every Sri Lankan we met smiled and said hello, and they seemed so pleased to see foreigners walking off the beaten track. The town itself was nothing to ... read more

Geo: 6.02661, 80.2176Catch up: We left the "Evil Coconut Hotel" the day before yesterday and enjoyed a short scenic drive along the coast via the Turtle Hatchery to Galle only some 45 km away.Galle is an established port city strategically located at the extreme South East of Sri Lanka. Originally founded by the Portuguese in the 1600's it was an important trading port en route to the East Indies. Impressive fortifications and ramparts were constructed.....further developed by the Dutch and finally occupied in ernest by the The British from 1815 after the fall of Kandy. Behind the fortified sea wall lies an intact historic Colonial style town of some 90 acres, complete with Dutch Cathedral, colonial mansions, a court house, historic post office and many many other impressive buildings. It came into it's own in 2004 ... read more

Geo: 6.38321, 80.0112Monday 1st December: You will be pleased to hear that yesterday was a relatively blog free day. A rare day spent by the pool and also an even rarer walk down to the beach were we spent 30 minutes! It was a sunny and hot stroll passing quaint well appointed bungalows each with a friendly well fed dog who ran up to greet us. Earlier that morning a troop of monkeys peered at us from the roof of our villa and a huge water monitor lizard strutted about the hotel grounds.....an al fresco dinner by the pool watching a massive electrical storm......The Hotel is grand and lavish and belongs to a "Mr BIG COCONUT" a Sri Lankan...........all very tasteful apart from a totally tacky water feature by the pool comprising a massive concrete square ... read more

Geo: 6.38321, 80.0112Head for the Beach! I thought I would never utter those words! In the last 20 years, I think we have collectively only spent about 6 hours by a Hotel Pool or Sea. The most in one hit was 2 hours in Rarotonga when after entertaining the whole resort by falling of a Kayak boredom set in and off we went in search of local "stuff"!!However, 5 days of "GLIMP" weather has caused the us to pull the "ripcord " on this area and head South and down the Island in search of sun. There is little point in waiting to see if things are going to improve weather-wise. We are still coughing and spluttering and it has taken 3 days for Cathy's jeans to semi-dry despite ironing them for 1/2 hour in our ... read more
