India to Sri Lanka It took 34 hours with 2 hours of disjointed airport sleep in between, but I finally made it from India to Sri Lanka! India, you taught me a lot and introduced me to plenty of beautiful people, but you were rough. So grateful to be in a quiet town with an empty beach now. Plans shifted and I've learned that there's no use in fighting what the universe presents. All the struggles and things I wouldn't have chosen are just opportunities for something new. So when orion told me he wanted to split up and travel with someone else for a while, I knew better than to argue. Sure I'm not happy about it, but it's about time he and I take some space from each other. So while he is in ... read more

Day 11/12 Our day started with a reasonably late traditional Sri Lanken style breakfast of toast, fruit juice, coconut milk rice with onion timbal, pancakes with honey and coconut, buffalo curd with kitul (made with Palm sap) and a fresh fruit platter. Not quite the cooked breakfast that we had been expecting, but nice all the same. We grabbed some beach towels and headed off to find a spot to lay out. We were offered sunbeds outside one of the beach bars, no charge he said, so we took advantage of the offer. There was very little room on the beach because the tide was so high, and every now and again a big wave caught out people walking along, and came upto our sunbeds. We had a drink in the bar whose beds we were ... read more

Day 10 We were up and ready for the tuk tuk to pick us up, and our hosts had kindly made us some breakfast to take on the boat, in case that provided wasn't upto much. We'd taken travel sick tablets as we weren't sure how rough it would be, especially after the rain last night. The tuk tuk was late, and we were just contemplating walking to the meeting office when it sped towards us. It was literally a 5 minute ride, and when we arrived we were the last to register and as soon as we had filled our names in, they called for everyone to follow them. We headed to the harbour side where there were a number of similar boats loading up with hopeful whale watchers. We opted to sit downstairs, as ... read more

Day 9 We didn't sleep too badly considering the rain storm brought a flying insect infestation into the room, and Russ spent 10minutes swatting them away from the mosquito curtain whilst deciding on the best course of action to get rid. Once the rain stopped they seemed to disappear and all we were left with in the morning was evidence of a number of casualties. The porter/waiter/ everything man brought us a brew at 5am, but was early so it was a good job we had anticipated this and set the alarm for 10minutes before. We collected our things together and headed down to collect our breakfast picnic, Russ having opted for cheese also today. Greetings from Sri Lanka In 2011 Chris and I planned a trip to India and Sri Lanka, eight weeks in the former and four in the latter. The Indian government changed their visa rules and required a 60 day gap before re-entry and we had already booked the flight to and from India. So our plans were changed and Sri Lanka went back on the list for future trips. Over the winter we started planning a trip to Southern Africa and the safari costs were hugely expensive so we looked again at Sri Lanka and here we are. Last Saturday, 16th April, I made a late breakfast for the girls, Keith and Vicki as the next day we were off to Sri Lanka. My bag was all packed and I headed off to Forest Hall where ... read more

It took four bus transfers but I was finally back on the southern coast. The amount of sweat I was producing confirmed this. Since my arrival in Sri Lanka, I had been moving somewhere new practically every day. Despite the ease of travel in this country, I was getting tired. I needed a place to settle down for a few days and Mirissa would be this place. Situated between the bigger town of Matara and the beach town of Weligama, Mirissa was a quaint beach village that seemed to have an up and coming tourist industry. It definitely felt quiet compared to other places like Hikkaduwa. I hadn't written down the hostel address in my little notebook and all I had was the name so I walked around the place for a good while just asking ... read more

Tavel south to via Puttalam to chilaw for a very enjoyable stay with couchsurfing host Roshan and his dear mum; a lovely home in a pleasant town. 03/04/16 I venture back 10k north to Anawilundawa and charm myself someone's bicycle for an enjoyable morning roll around the lesser known listed wetland. Very pretty and pleasingly heavy with birdlife, I return to Roshan's house until after a tasty lunch and head on my way via Kurunegala to Kagalle for a nights stay. 04/04/16 bus to Pinnawala and swing by to learn more of the nearby millennium elephant foundation (slightly construed ethics - essentially a heavily funded elephant riding park lol ) then after lunch dodging the mammoth entrance fee wonder down & watch the Pinnawala herd bath in the river. I bus south onto Ratnapura, 05/04/16 enjoy ... read more

I was passed out with my head resting on a table. Some PA announcements brought me to consciousness. Airport staff and other travelers were going by. I must have slept for a few hours I thought proudly. How did I get here? Well first I took a flight from Kathmandu to Delhi and had to transfer from the international to domestic airport. After going overland for so long, it was weird to now be back where I started. It was 38 degrees Celsius and Indian Holi was in full swing. I then boarded another flight to the south of India, the city of Chennai. From there I had a layover for a few hours. Then I found out that my flight was delayed. It was already midnight. At about 0115h boarding began and I was off ... read more
