So what did you do this morning? We set out just to do a tea plantation and ended up doing a whole lot more. Tripadvisor and Lonely Planet both recommended the same tea plantation Hundungona so we commandeered a tuk tuk driver to take us there, wait for us and bring us back for 2500lkr. We headed off and it soon became clear that our driver didn't know where he was going. He kept having to ask people and in the end I put google maps on so we eventually ended up at the right place. Sorry....just need to backtrack....last night, I'm asleep and I feel something on my wrist. In the half dark I see something about an inch long, I shake it off and turn on the light but see nothing. I look under ... read more

More than 40 teas in one day? That's easy in Sri Lanka! This morning we had a lie in until 6am! Glyn couldn't believe his luck. It's amazing we slept as the ineffective ceiling fan is incredibly noisy. At our £7 per night hotel, breakfast is included so at 7am we were served with toast, fried egg, tea, noodles, spicy coconut sambal and dahl. Plus some watermelon. Across the road we caught a tuk-tuk driven by a middle aged guy in a red stripey shirt. He'd not heard of Hundungoda Tea Plantation that Glyn had seen in Lonely Planet and I found on TripAdvisor, but after much discussion with the other tuk-tuk drivers he agreed to take us there, wait and bring us back. It turned out to be a fair journey for a tuk-tuk and ... read more

A veritable lie in until 5:45 was followed by packing up as we were on the move again. We don't often spend three nights in one place so we were beginning to feel like we'd moved in. Lion Lodge comes recommended; it's expensive compared to some places but it's clean, the staff are great and you get the room you booked at the price you booked at. Thuminda picked us up at 7 and we set off on what google maps estimated to be a 7 1/2 hour journey to Mirissa. Our first stop was for a puncture. People had been pointing this out so Thuminda stopped and saw a rear tyre was going down. Somehow we were right opposite a tyre place! Actually that brings me to something I've been thinking about mentioning. They used ... read more

In the UK if you get a puncture in your car tyre, you have to pay a small fortune to replace it. In Sri Lanka, you repair it the same you would a bicycle tyre. I got to witness this today and Thuminda, our driver couldn't believe that we throw away a tyre for the sake of one small hole. Today we were heading to Mirissa on the south coast which is around an 8 hour drive from Sigiyira, although Thuminda said it could take longer if we need to take detours due to floods. Driving through countryside and towns I saw a lot of 'driving'. Copious amounts of beeping - to let others know you are tailgating and about to overtake despite oncoming traffic. Mopeds undertaking on the left, buses overtaking on the right regardless ... read more

We learned there was a turtle refuge centre so we decided that would be the last thing to do on my amazing holiday. We walked and thanks to Daddy's GPS we got lost but in the end we found it. It was a small area not very modern and the tanks were made of concrete but at least we could see over the top because they were not in glass cubes so you could reach into the water and touch them. There was a place where the turtles' eggs were buried. There were four types of turtles. A massive one was very friendly and I liked to push it to the other sideof the "pool". When we left I thought it was a bit sad to think that this would be the last thing we would ... read more

Vanuit Ella namen we twee bussen richting Uda Walawe. ... read more

It's been a while since my last blog, that pesky thing called work got in the way for a while but having dispensed with Corporate life for a few months over the summer, it was time to hit the airport once again. Destination of choice this time was the tropical isle of Sri Lanka. On arrival at Colombo airport we were firstly impressed by the splendid choice of arrival duty free. It seems in Sri Lanka that the airport is the place to buy your domestic appliances, there were many shops full of fridges, washing machines etc. I did toy with the idea of picking up a new microwave but thought I’d leave it for now. After meeting our driver, we drove south through the suburbs of Colombo and then hit the new Southern Expressway heading ... read more

My Sri Lankan holiday adventurewas coming to an end.. Sad face. I paid an extra £25 for an excursion whale watching at the coastal town of Mirissa. This is meant to be one of the best places in the world to see Blue Whales which I was super excited about! Not only did I see a couple of Blue Whales, we also spotted plenty of dolphins and sperm whales. I think Unique Travel should incorporate this into the overall trip instead of making it optional. It was fairly cheap but added so much to the whole holiday being able to see such magnificent creatures up close! I got to see more rare sea life up close when we visited the turtle hatchery which houses and raises baby turtles ready for release into the wild. I enjoyed ... read more

Mirissa Beach is a must-stop destination for tourists in southern Sri Lanka. Mirissa bay is truly gorgeous with warm and calm blue water, fine sand and a string of palm trees underneath which turtles lay their eggs at night. The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly when we got to witness about 50 baby turtles making a perilous journey back to the water. This happened right in the middle of busy MirissaBeach. We were walking along the water around midday just when temperatures were scorching hot, so there were very few people on the beach. Only the lifeguards were keeping an eye on the baby turtles at first, but the shouts of delight and amazement we released at the sight of this very unique moment attracted more tourists, and a crowd quickly formed around the new ... read more
