Oohhh…. I didn’t sleep so well last night! I was in bed relatively early after the driving around in tuk tuks drama. I really tried to settle in to sleep, but after a couple of hours of tossing and turning, I gave up trying to go to sleep. I decided on watching a series of Golden Age on my iPad to help send me over! The last time I looked at the clock, it was 3am! But at least I then slept until 8am. I guess it’s not too bad, as I actually don’t have to do anything too tiring each day…. Just relax! Maybe it was the effects of the full moon!!!! Ella hasn’t got a lot of comings and goings today, just one early check out, no check ins; so we can go out ... read more

I had a really good nights sleep last night, which really helps to set you up for a good day ahead. I was up, however and sorted by 9:15! Although I should point out, everyone else at Basecamp was at the morning yoga class at 8:30! I may consider joining in the early evening class at some point. That is a Yin Yoga class. It is a slower, pre relaxing form of yoga. …. Maybe! At 9:30, the class was completed, and the breakfast table was laid. The menu is a vegan menu. I’m enjoying the food, but I rarely know exactly what I am eating! The variations of hummus, the peanut butter, and the chocolate spread are also nice. They are all homemade, and taste much better than their mass produced counterparts! Breakfast is always ... read more

Well, it’s been a bit of a cyclone so far! Like the title… it’s actually day 3, but really feels like day 1! Last night, I went to bed at about 8am, and slept until 9:30 am! I certainly needed that! When I got up, I have to say, I was feeling quite wobbly! The last couple f days have taken their toll on me! I joined the group at the Basecamp for breakfast. It’s vegan menu here, so that’ll be interesting! I’m not even sure what was for breakfast, but I enjoyed it all the same! During breakfast I had a visit from Ashkar, my driver from yesterday. I had left my jumper in his car. The people eye are just so lovely, he had come to return it to me! And then, about half ... read more

The two hour drive was quite nice, just watching the scenery fly by! We did do a pit stop. Ashkar, the driver, suggested I needed a green tea with ginger to pull me round! We were about halfway at that point, so I was ready for a break. I am feeling so tired because I didn’t manage to sleep on the flights, which is really unusual for me. I can normally sleep anywhere! It was lovely driving into the house gardens and seeing Ella. I haven’t seen her since October, I was just sorry that I couldn’t give her the gifts that I have brought from home as they are in my case, maybe she will get them tomorrow! I got a shower whilst Ella sorted out a tee shirt and shorts for me to wear, ... read more

This trip to Sri Lanka is a return visit to a country we first came to in 2016. On that occasion we did most of the normal sights and a safari to Yala to see leopards. This time we have come in search of blue whales. We have tried previously here in Trincomalee and last year off the coast of Chile. Despite two five hour trips this time we didn't see whales of any description. So it's obviously not meant to be. On 2nd February, my 69th birthday, we arrived in Colombo about 6pm at the colonial Galle Face Hotel, a birthday treat from Chris, but boy has Colombo changed. Like many debt ridden countries it has sold its soul to China and India. A massive new Chinese built port and huge skyscraper hotels have completely ... read more

The last place we stayed was another Heritance hotel, located south of Colombo in Ahungalla, after another beautiful drive through the mountains and jungle. This was intended to be more of a beach location and the least expensive hotel of our trip. It showed, but it was still nice! It seems mostly like it is probably a party place in normal times. They were trying to get us to join beach volleyball or water aerobics or water polo... But I think there were less than 20 people total staying the whole time we were there (4 nights). I felt a bit bad - the staff were super nice! The first day we just went to the pool bar for some nice fruity drinks and watched a few interesting guests: a couple learning to swim apparently and ... read more

Galle - Sri Lanka #heygo http://www.heygo.com In 1640, the Portuguese were forced to surrender to the Dutch East India Company. The Dutch built the present fort in 1663. They built a fortified solid granite wall and three bastions, known as "Sun", "Moon" and "Star". After the British took over the country from the Dutch in 1796, they preserved the fort unchanged and used it as the administrative centre of the district. Our tour started overlooking the cricket ground. The ground was built in 1876 as a race course. There was no permanent pavilion until 1892, when a ‘grand stand’ was built. Eventually the racing ceased and the ground was used for cricket matches more than races. The fort was under renovation so our guide could not walk along the full length of the walls so he ... read more

Dammit I just lost a post ...I forgot you have to hit save periodically to protect against quirks in the WiFi. It has been quite a good so far but at times it waivers . Like now .. I was describing Ella . A backpackers haven . I seem to discover one in every country I travel . This one had the usual assortment of small restaurants , hostels , homestay and coffee shops . SRI Lankan coffee is terrible . It is in powder form and I think it is boiled as it is quite thick when poured . The sludge on the bottom of the cup is awful . I bought a small bottle of Nescafe shortly after I arrived . Nothing I would drink at home but definately preferable here. The backpackers are the ... read more

Sunday 16 February, 2020, cont'd. We had a quiet afternoon. I did a little packing, as we are leaving in the morning. Lights out 10.00 pm. Monday 17 February, 2020. Today we transfer from Mirissa to Tissamaharama (known as Tissa). A reasonable night's sleep, stirred at 7.20 am. Down to breakfast and we actually managed to get some eggs, sausages, toast and coffee quickly from the younger lad who doesn't have a clue. Spotted the better English speaking guy and paid the bill. Told him we have a taxi booked. Back to the room, to shower and finish packing. Brought the cases down at 10.20 am and waited for our driver. Two German girls arrived and we talked with them. Car turned up at 10.50 am, a Toyota Prius and we loaded up and left. The ... read more
