Here we go! It took us a long time to get here but the adventure has finally begun. We were originally drawn to Sri Lanka by the quintessential symbols of kindly intelligence - elephants. The country hosts the largest herds of wild Asian Elephants found anywhere in the world. But it turns out they are also the perfect ambassadors for the Sri Lankan people. We have been overwhelmed by the generosity and all around friendliness we have been met with in the South. Many of the people we have spoken with have told us that we are the first Canadian and American they have met, as the majority of travelers to this part of the country are either Russian, German or other Europeans. We haven't encountered anyone from the Americas since we've arrived. We'll see what ... read more

Friday 6th December: not a lot to do this day as we had decided to take it easy and enjoy the beach. So after breakfast we headed off across the lawn and on to the beach. It was hot, seriously hot but fortunately there was a strong breeze which made it bearable. We walked down to the shore to be welcomed by a couple of village dogs: dogs are everywhere in Sri Lanka especially along the main roads for some reason, and many of them show signs of having been injured. Although the driving here is pretty crazy drivers do take care to avoid the dogs lying along the verges. So accompanied by our new, scruffy canine friends we strolled down the beach which shelved very steeply into the sea. The swell would break into a ... read more

A couple of days of lazing on Mirissa beach and it's the first time I've experienced proper heat since I've been here. It's very nice but it could be anywhere. I should have just chilled for my time here and read my book, but instead I made the huge mistake of going on a whale spotting tour you see advertised all over. Six hours on a little boat chasing after a whale, left and right, round and round, up and down - I was so sick! Eventually they gave me a mattress to lie down on and I slept through most of it. They did wake me up when the blue whale was spotted and I managed to force myself to the side of the boat to see its nose and a great spurt of water ... read more

Geo: 5.94354, 80.4589Sri Lanka 26th November – 12 December 2013After yet another visit to The Quality Airport Hotel, where we were greeted like old friends, we flew back to Sri Lanka. In the Maldives Pauline and Colin's Thomson rep. Rohan, was very helpful and he arranged for a driver to collect us at Colombo airport and take us straight to Galle, so avoiding the waste of a day travelling if we had stayed near the airport overnight. Not only did the driver meet us but also Rohan's friend who had been asked to take care of us as it was night! They were both very pleasant but the drive was a challenge. The new road had opened for Prince Charles's visit 2 weeks earlier, and we were able to use it but there is a 10 kilometre ... read more

Sooo - In my last blog - I mentioned that Barry wasn't feeling 100% and that he had a cough… Well I MADE him go see a Dr as it sounded like it was getting deeper into his lungs…. We asked the owner of our guesthouse, Arman- If he could recommend a good doctor in Galle… well not only did he recommend one, but he drove Barry to to the Dr. and waited for him! How is that for hospitality… We were hoping for just an address and we would catch a Tuk Tuk. The owner is Sri Lankan, but has a German wife, so they spend time between Sri Lanka and Germany. This is the third time that someone has gone above and beyond for us this trip… In our guesthouse in Bentota, they offered ... read more

We were out of the gates at 5:30 complete with our new front and rear lighting system that was a marked improvement from our previous one. I teased Shauna that we could now start at 4:00 instead of 5:30 (half-hour before sunrise) in the mornings. You can imagine how that comment went over with her. :-) She still thinks getting up at 4:00 (time we get up to be ready for 5:30) to beat the traffic, heat, and humidity is criminal on our holidays. I always remind her whether she would like to ride from 5:30 to 7:30 or 11:00 to 13:00 (on the shorter days we are usually done be 11:00)… That usually ends the discussion. :-) Our ride out of Colombo (population 5.6M) wasn't too bad relatively speaking (remember I had to cycle into ... read more

We made it! First ride and 60Km out of the gate…. We started at 5:30am, using our headlamps and headed out for Bentota… Luckily for us, we were going against traffic… it was crazy, especially the busses,,, they don't stop for anything! Oh… and the cows… can't forget about the cows… Like India, cows have free reign and are EVERYWHERE! Randomly roaming the highway… I am thankful however, that we weren't riding INTO Colombo - that would have made me drink. The thing is, you just have to go in a straight line and everything will just go around you.. except for busses, these things are just insane. It really wasn't that bad, especially after about 25km or so south of Colombo - we still had to keep out heads up, but it was nothing that ... read more

Walking along the train tracks in Lovinia heading to the train station, dripping with sweat, we bypassed the beach with its crashing waves. Our group had expanded from 3 to 6, adding Pri Ya, Tim and Alan, all of us from different countries. Tickets bought for Galle, we had a long train journey. Local food and drink sellers waltzed through the carriages shouting words in Sri Lankan which I knew none of and locals with disabilities singing their hearts out to earn a few bob. We were all stood in the doorway of the carriage, some of us propped up against the wall next to the toilet and some sat on the floor almost legs hanging out of the doorway of the train. All good fun! Arriving into Galle, we bartered for 2 tuk tuks to ... read more

Remembrance of things past: Sri Lanka has just emerged from decades of civil war, causing the deaths of 100,000 or more citizens. On top of that, the 2004 tsunami killed over 30,000 in one day. Wherever you look, there are reminders of the past and efforts underway for reconstruction. Near the sea end of Rumasalla Peninsula, where we have been staying in the Glass House, there is a large statue of Hanuman, the Hindu Monkey God, erected during the civil war and dedicated to the hope for ethnic harmony in Sri Lanka. Hanuman is connected to Rumasalla in the Hindu epic the Ramayana. Many different versions exist about what Hanuman did, but one is that when Lakshman is severely wounded in the battle of Lanka, Hanuman is asked to get the medicinal herbs to cure him. ... read more

People who live in glass houses... Through a friend of a friend (you know who you are) we've been given the wonderful gift of a week's stay at the Silva Tree House (aka The Glass House) on Rumasalla Peninsula just east of the city of Galle. We're very grateful for this time to rest from our full-on days and build our energies for "Phase 2" of our time in Sri Lanka. Our trip is now half over, we realize. I've loved having books to read again, from the chest full of books and games, and have already enjoyed "A Year in Green Tea and Tuk Tuks", about the trials and tribulations of the establishment of an organic farm near Galle, and "A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian", a very funny tale of two sisters trying ... read more
