We travelled south overnight and arrived in Jinju in the early hours of the morning. We headed to Jinhangho Lake first. It was really quiet and we were the only people about. I head down to the lake and was pretty underwhelmed by it. I took a few photos of the misty lake, more to just say that I had been as it wasn't too pretty. I sat and ate some breakfast while reading my book for a bit. Then went for a bit of a wander around. There was a kid's amusement park, which seemed a bit eerie as there was no one around. I did get to see the sun rising over Jinju, which was pretty. We were by Jinhangho Lake for a couple of hours and for me, it wasn't really worthy of ... read more

Friday 9th October 2015 We had booked a train ticket directly to Seoul the day before and after checking out of the sex Motel we made our way to the train station and took the 3 hour train journey without any issues. We did bump into an American guy before we got onto the train who seemed very happy to have met a couple of backpackers and said that youth was wasted on the young. Made us feel young and not the tired messes we really are at this point!! Arriving in Seoul you instantly know you're in a capital city; skyscrapers, McDonalds, Starbucks, Burger King and the like all line the train station. There was also hundreds of people rushing around - good job we like busy places. We took the metro one stop to ... read more

Tuesday 6th October 2015 Today we sadly wave goodbye to Japan having spent a wonderful 3 weeks here. In order to leave Japan though we had to take the train to Fukuoka and then a local bus to the ferry terminal. The journey was fine on the Shinkansen, but on getting to the bus stop and realising we had just missed the bus and the next one wasn't for 20 mins, we soon began to realise, with the crowd of local people in the queue behind us that we were going to have to fight to get a spot on the next bus with our massive backpacks. We did fight our way on and squished ourselves on the back seat with luggage all around us and arrived at the ferry terminal 30 mins later. We checked ... read more

Busan International Film Festival is held every year, normally in early October. This year, the 20th film festival ran from the 1st to 10th October. This was the third time I have been to the film festival. The first time I just turned up and bought tickets on the day, last year I was slightly more organised, and this year, I think I cracked it. The film catalogue is released on online in mid-September. so you can see what films take your fancy. This is a huge selection, there are films from all over the world, with a special focus on Asian film. There is also a great timetable that shows what film will be shown on each day at each cinema. I find this invaluable when it come to planning. The cinemas are Busan Cinema Centre, ... read more

The trip up from Busan was pleasantly short. It was only a four-hour hop from Busan's Central Station up to Seoul's Express Bus Terminal from where I jumped onto the excellent Metro system and made my way up to Hongik University station and from there it was just a short walk to my hostel - Seoulwise Guesthouse, which was to be my home for the following 9, yes 9, days staying from 14th of September until the 23rd. I had a total of two weeks in South Korea spending 5 days in Busan and 9 in Seoul. Some people might say that it's too much but throughout my travels I've always favoured quality over quantity. In other words, getting to know fewer places well rather than breezing through more and not experiencing anything! It turned out ... read more

Seoul Museum of History is not one of the major sights in the city. I only learnt about the place a couple of years ago, and kept meaning to visit, but I also kept forgetting about it. With a couple of free hours, I decided to head there and learn more about this beast of a city. The museum is in a good location. I walked there from the City Hall area by Deoksugung Palace. I had checked the map and the museum's website and it was about a 15 minute walk. The museum is situated next to Gyeonghuigong Palace. Outside of the museum, there is an old streetcar that operated on the city's streets between 1939 and 2964. The first streetcars began operating in 1899 on May 17th between Cheongnyangni and Jongno. They were the ... read more

It was interesting to see Zaha Hadid masterpiece from my hotel's window the first day in Seoul. More interestingly, I did not realize it was Hadid's design. It is a Blob Architecture, as I coined it, with predominantly using Aluminium Cladding panels facade. Its not a conventional approach in design but still using conventional Cast-In Situ reinforced concrete structure. At night the building really showing off with its lighting effects, as if like a blob objects that illuminates from inside its body. Brilliantly composed with the surrounding landscapes, and colourful high rise buildings. The ground green grass surfaces overshadowed by thousands of white artificial roses, lit using LED bulbs. It mesmerizes the spaces against the historical walls and street furniture. The Complex called Dongdaemun Design Plaza, often referred to the DDP. It has been designed as ... read more

So this morning I woke up feeling like shit. I don't know why, but I was really tired and in a bad mood. Maybe it's because I made a few mistakes at work yesterday (basically the things people tell me don't match with my schedule and I was late to class... They told me it was not my mistake, but things like that somehow really get to me). Anyway, I got to the YMCA and even before I started I felt like I was doing everything wrong and was basically useless. That feeling got even stronger when I ate lunch all by myself, because Mark could eat with her class and no one else was around. I just had a really hard time because I felt like nothing I could offer was of any use. But ... read more

The trip over couldn’t have been more than an hour, but stepping out of Busan International Airport I felt like I’d travelled to a different continent! The grey, drizzly sky of Osaka was replaced with crystal clear blue, the confusing signs pointing here there and everywhere were gone and it only cost me 1300 Won (1 EURO!) for the one hour bus ride to Haeundae Beach where I would be staying the next few days. It’s probably fair to say I liked South Korea almost immediately! I asked the driver to drop me off at the beach and although his English wasn’t top-notch he seemed to understand what I wanted. I had directions to my hostel printed but they were directions from the subway stop. I had no idea where I was when I got off ... read more

I officially finished my first week of work! So many things happened that I will only write down the most memorable ones. On monday, Mark and I were picked up at the ICYE office by a relatively young man (I don't know if he's 25 or 35, to be honest...) and he took us to the Gangnam YMCA. His English was pretty good, but it seemed like he was feeling very self-concious about it. He seemed to be a little nervous, but in likeable way. As we walked up the hill, he walked very slow, and his breathig was a little heavy, so I was wondering if he was not used to walking? But then as we entered the YMCA and got into the elevator, he said in his (rather cute) Korean accent: "Ah, sorry, sorry. ... read more
