This was our second trip to Seoul, and this time I was determined to get out of the metropolis and see the DMZ border zone and possibly a national park. Neither of those happened, for some reason. Regardless, it was a nice long weekend out of Taiwan, which is often needed. Speaking of Taiwan, this country (back in ROC now) is a sorry-looking backwater compared with South Korea these days. Once economic competitors, South Korea has left Taiwan -a.k.a. "Taibodia" in the dust. Formosa is literally out of the race. I fear that this place is going the way of the Philippines and Indonesia. Oh well, cha bu doah... One thing I feel Taiwan still has on Korea is chicks. While there are, without question, some gorgeous women in Seoul, Taipei has got that city licked ... read more

After counting down the sleeps from about 89 (and still getting to 0 on the wrong day) Cathy was finally able to hop on the bus to Incheon airport to go meet her mom, Susan, who was commming to visit. We had already thought of about 4 weeks of things to do, see and eat for the 2 weeks she would be here. So from day 1 we started her on the grand tour. Here's her version of part ofthe trip... {Darrell} On Sunday evening (19th) Darrell, Cath and I set off on the first part of our holiday together. We went into Seoul and looked around an arts and crafts market called Insadong. It extends down a street in Seoul and has masses of shops and street stalls selling typical Korean crafts. Although there is ... read more

What was supposed to be a lovely passenger cruise ferry between Osaka and Busan taking 16 hours took more into a 28 hour ordeal. I awoke at 5am from the ship moving abruptly. Realizing that no one was panicking and the ship wasn't sinking, I went back to sleep. Two hours later, I stared out of our window and noticed that our ship wasn't moving... and would not move for another 10 hours. Our Panstar ferry was involved in a minor collision with a smaller vessel and the Japanese coast guard had to be called to inspect the damage. In an effort to appease irate passengers, the ferry provided lunch and dinner. This foray into Korean cuisine left me curious but not desperately seeking out more of the same cuisine. I appreciate that small dried fish ... read more

I forgot just how different to Busan Seoul really is. We live near Busan which is very Asian; bright lights, hectic, busy streets etc. Seoul is very much like London with its cosmopolitan feel, wider streets, and so many waegooks that you almost forget you are in Asia! After an amazing morning at the DMZ we headed back to the centre of Seoul and hit the electronics market. A few months back we had our camera stolen. I was pretty gutted as this had been a gift from all my friends at Haymarket. We have been saving to buy a new one and the electronics market had been rumoured to sell cameras at half the price of those sold in England. The market was massive; rows upon rows of electronics, MP3's, cameras, camcorders, phones, laptops ... read more

This is a catch-up blog. Since I wrote this, I've been to the States and back for my sister Lori's wedding... which is a different blog entry. I went to the Lotus Lantern Festival the Saturday before I left for the wedding. What fun! There were booths and interesting things to see… especially for someone who recently arrived in Korea. There was wonderful street food, arts and crafts booths, and processions of people in traditional dress and a sampling of Buddhism from other countries in the international booths from places like Thailand, India, Tibet, Taiwan and so forth. Wouldn’t you know, of course, my camera battery died for the first time ever just before the Lantern Parade. The parade passed by with wave after wave of people in various traditional costumes and at least on lantern ... read more

So this weekends trip to Seoul was phenomenal. Many thanks to all those who made it happen, I am really starting to make some good friends over here. BRBRThis weekend started pretty standard. I got out of school, ran home, ate some dinner, met up with jonny, stopped by work to pick up my mp3, and settled at WaBar for a Vat of Beer. Soon Katie and Michelle met up with us and we were on our way to the train station. We arrived at the station and found ourselves some soju style refreshments for the highspeed train ride and then we were off. Whirling down the tracks at speeds well over 160mph we'd hit our destination in Seoul in just over 2 hours. Upon arriving we were greated by the typical utter chaos of ... read more
