So this weekend was beautiful and we went to Seoul for one night and went to see the big Gyeongbokgung Palace. We took and English tour when we got there and the woman giving the tour marched us around like we were racing some other group. But the other group was just in her head. Anyways, it was really beautiful because all the cherry blossoms were out, they only bloom for 2 weeks of the year, so it was pretty special. I found it interesting that this palace and the Imperial Palace in China look so similar, but then she tried to explain to me they were both build using the same book (she seemed to assume that I would know which book but I don't, and I didn't want her to think I was stupid ... read more

Incheon, Korea has a most unique entry. Outside of the Panama Canal it has the only sea locks we pass through around the world. Because there is such an extreme tide and strong currents in this part of Korea, it was necessary to build the floodgates to protect the ships in the inner harbor. At 30 feet, Incheon has the second greatest tidal fluctuation in the world just behind the Bay of Fundy in Canada. One notable difference between Korea and Panama is about 60 degrees of warmth. Brrrrrrrrrr! It seems that we have been following in General MacArthur's footsteps most of this trip. The "American Caesar” was in Darwin, Australia, Manila and Corregidor during WWII. Incheon is where he launched an amphibious attack during the Korean War to recapture this strategic port and retake Seoul ... read more

Anne asked two days ago if I had any interest in attending a speaking engagement with a Tibetean monk named Mingyur Rinopoche whom would be talking about Tergar Meditation at Johyesa Temple. Recently, I had been getting into relaxing my mind, doing a bit of yoga and meditation. I figured this would be a great way to learn from a top-notch professional about meditation and seek a few pointers along the way. Plus how many times in your life do you actually get to meet a Tibetan monk? Exactly, zero. Accepting the assignment I knew I should prep a few questions so I looked up Tergar Meditation online at http://tergar.org/about/index.shtml Once on the website about tergar meditation I learned he had an anxiety disorder through meditation he overcame this disability. The more I read on the ... read more

01/24- Mon. This day takes me back to memories of the high and lows of camping away from the amenities that we grow so accustomed to in our homes. Do ever recall being away from home and becoming very ill without the comforts of familiar medicines? Today I was reminded of one time in particular. As a kid my family was camping and waterskiing at Crawford Lake. I became extremely ill and soon an outhouse became my closest friend. At the time I just wanted to die. A memory that lies quietly until times like today. My day was planned to have lunch with a new acquaintance. This was to be a great opportunity to get to know one another better. My body, however, decided a completely unexpected agenda. Yes, I became very ill. My day ... read more

The journal will entail an overview of my weeks journey here in Seoul. Each week I continue to encounter many new adventures. I feel as though I am a rose that is slowing opening as I am surrounded by loving people with a great sense of adventure & humor. 01/17-Mon. Now was the test of trust for a new hairdresser. I had a referral from Monique who is blonde and has experience here in Seoul with various hairdressers. My appt. was at the the Sophia Beauty Shop in Itaewon. Brian did a fantastic job with the coloring and cut. If you plan to go this shop just note it's all about the hairand talent, not the cleanliness nor the modern accessories in this shop. 01/18-Tues. Great lunch with Ms. Bae and Ms. Yoo. They are both ... read more

On Saturday morning, I asked Shauna, "would you accompany me today to Unhyeonggung Palace and Jogyesa Temple? They are both in Insadong then we can do a bit of shopping and grab dinner before heading home. How does that sound?" "It sounds like I should bring my camera and be prepared for a day outside. Thanks for inviting me along," she replied with a smile breaking out on her face. Before leaving the apartment I read two small passages in the LP guidebook starting with Unhyeongung; The modest and plain natural-wood design of this minor palace reflects the austere tastes of Hungseon Daewongun (1820-1898), King Gojong's stern and conservative father whose policies included massacring Korean Catholics, excluding foreigners from Korea and closing Confusion schools. Gojong was born and raised here until 1863 when he ascended the ... read more

(above you'll see a panorama of Changdeok Palace, which ill talk about later) Seoul - Insadong So this past weekend we headed north on our first visit to Seoul... which is for those of you unfamiliar with South Korea, its capital. The city is massive, so we decided to pick just one area of the city to first. We chose Insadong and its surrounding, which we’ll talk about in a bit. Anyways, we jumped on the bus at 9 am Saturday morning from Cheongju. The ride took roughly 1½ hours from bus terminal to bus terminal. Much better than our pervious bus ride of 3 hours from the airport... We arrived at the Intercity Bus terminal in Seoul a little disoriented, but excited non-the-less. English below. Es had endlos viele Pluspunkte fuer den 'First time traveller'. Höhepunkte bis ... read more

Last weekend was probably one of the best weekend’s I’ve had in Korea so far. It started out as a typical Friday where I was exhausted from having taught my 2nd grade and Kindergarten classes, plus the two extra afterschool lessons that I was told about ten minutes beforehand. It seems to be the Korean way for bosses to tell employees of things right at the last possible moment. For the life of me I won’t ever understand this. That evening after taking a short nap I went to my Korean language class, which has basically become the Friday night social gathering for the 'Yongin Crew' that I've started to associate myself with. After Korean class around 8:30 we decided to go and eat before we would head out to the bar. A favorite restaurant of ... read more
