I start this entry, for all intents and purposes, behind in the count due to the lashing I received from Mt. Birobong last weekend. Korea 1… Jon 0. Here is where we begin this weekend’s little shenanigan, beginning Friday after school and ending Sunday in Seoul at a magnificent palace dating back over seven hundred years. I received another teacher’s dinner invitation after school Friday, and of course, I accepted. Soju sounded rather good at the time, even despite it’s rankness. So I went home to drop off my school stuff and picked up Cass. We went downtown, just off the main street, to one of those ‘grill at your table’ Korean BBQ’s, which I have really warmed up to. The rest of the teachers showed up, English Mr. Kim- Science Mr. Kim- Superman Mr. Kim- ... read more

Entering the unknown The lonely planet warned us already: “Almost everything you’ll experience in Korea is going to be different.” For once, they were right. It might have been our mindset coming from Nepal, it might have been our luck in meeting Korean friends who took us to visit their country, it might just be the country and its people themselves, but Korea has been different from everything we experienced so far. It is seven months ago that we ‘hit the road’. We are seven months, four countries, eight flights, three beaches, seven languages, thirteen ho(s)tels, a few trains, one car, three scooters, several buses and numerous metro’s, many new friends, and endless thoughts later. What does that do? How does that feel? It feels like perspectives are changing. Finally I’m starting to let go of ... read more

Lies, Damned Lies, and How Much Should Obama Lie? So Nepal got us thinking about wars once again. It seems impossible to avoid wars these days. Yet with the American elections coming up there seems to be a choice between “definitely war and maybe a chance of no war”. (Although, I heard they have not been able to fix those voting machines yet, that's gonna be manual counting again ;-).) Personally, I think “maybe no war” is preferable above anything on the other side of the continuum. Yet it seems that McCain is doing quite well which makes me wonder if American voters have a taste for ignorance. We have a saying in Dutch. An approximation of its translation could be: ‘Even a mule does not bump three times into the same stone’. Poor mule. Anyway, ... read more

This past Saturday Daniel and I went to Insadong and met up with some friends to do some shopping. Along the way we stopped at the coolest tea shop ever. It was upstairs in a back alley, and really small! When you walked in the door you had to maneuver yourself around pillows, small tables and half walls. Anyone without good balance, in a wheelchair, or slightly overweight would be unable to come here. We sat at a little round table in the back and were given little tea menus. I ordered cold Pear Tea, Dan got cold Citrus Tea, and some of the others in our group got Chrysanthemum, Lilac and Fruit Punch teas. They were all sooo good! The neatest part about this tea shop was the birds. There were probably a dozen little ... read more

So every once in a while I go to a temple in Seoul with a group of friends to visit some monks. Mostly Myeong dukk(monk), which is a monks name and "dukk" means monk. Sonali randomly found this place and befriended this one monk who keeps inviting her and her friends back. Today we went and talked with some foreign monks from the USA who are being officially ordained tomorrow morning (Thursday morning) as monks. It was great being able to talk with them about Zen buddhism. Their practice generally is different from the one in korea even though their teacher is korean-american. I've been interested in how the Buddhism here differs from other Buddhisms, but haven't been able to find a clear answer. I know some of the rituals and practices they do and they ... read more

Hey all! This was one hell of a Birthday party!!!! Buddha's birthday was actually 12th May, but the celebrations started a week before on the night of Saturday 3rd with the Lantern Eve parade, this was to celebrate the eve of the Lantern parade the following day. This first night consisted of some lanterns, traditional dancers, singing and general merriment!! The costumes were great - my favorite was the lotus flowers, they each resembled a petal and carried the lotus flower lantersn but when combined made one huge flower which flickered by the candle light it was incredible! Bear in mind however we thought this was maybe the main parade and we had understood the dates wrong!!! At the end everybody was dancing in the streets, the atmosphere was amazing :) Can't resist a little bit ... read more

Arriving in Korea was much more similar to Japan than China... although Suk-In might stop being my friend for comparing her country to Japan. But they are also very westernised in many ways, and a lot of people either speak some english or at least try to understand and explain themselves. This time we did have some booked accommodation, and pretty much knew how to get there. We stayed in a cheap little hostel in Insadong, which is in the centre, but quite near to most of the palaces and also in a very lively area full of art galleries and nice tea houses and restaurants... although after walking around, it seems like most places are full of nice art galleries, tea houses and restaurants. I think Seoul is art gallery city. After sleeping for two ... read more

Hello Friends and Family, Just a quick update that I landed safely in South Korea. I departed Shanghai on the new Maglev train reaching speeds of 430 kph. I met up with my great friend, Jesse, from Royal Roads and he told me about all the best sites and even loaned me his Lonely Planet. With bookk in hand, I managed to get to see five of the palaces, many gardens, city gates and city fortress walls. All of the ridiculously difficult Palace names are included on the photos. You can only find things on maps over here as street addresses barely exist and not in any discernable pattern. Having a great time, I'll be back in Vancouver tomorrow, technically before I even leave Korea (with the time change), so I'll see some of you for ... read more
