You might not know this, but in Korea, I'm kind of a big deal. Actually, in Pittsburgh, I'm also kind of a big deal judging by the fact that some of my most awesome friends made a life-sized rasterbation of me. They take it to their birthday parties, and then take pictures with "me." That's kind of ridiculously awesome. I love being in two places at once ;). Regardless, Koreans love me. I guess one of the main reasons would be because I'm Western. Most Koreans love staring unabashedly at Westerners. I can be doing something as mundane as standing on the subway or buying toilet paper at the local E-Mart, and all eyes will be on me. I even do my best to blend in: dark denim, dark coats, dark shoes, dark tops. Doesn't seem ... read more

This past weekend was a truly Korean experience with the annual Cheongdo Bull Fighting Festival and a tour of the persimmon Wine Tunnel. As the warm weather begins to arrive in South Korea, so too does lots of festivals and events to mark Spring! This weekend we traveled by train to the nearby city of Cheongdo for a day trip we will never forget! Before I get started on Saturday, Mike and I spent Friday night having dinner with an English teacher from his school and her family. It was awesome to eat in a Korean home (apartment) where we all sat around a tiny table on the floor and had a noodle/soup dish. Sandy, the teacher, has 3 kids, the oldest one in grade 1 and the youngest one 17 months and they are so ... read more

I'll be updating the blog soon with pictures of my place and the school but for now I want to talk about driving. Now I don't know about all the other asians but now I know why the Koreans back home (that used to live in Korea) drive so horribly. It's because that's how they drive here!!! The day the teacher picked me up from Kolon Hotel, was a rainy, windy day. We lugged my stuff into the trunk and off she went into two lanes. I figured she would veer off to one side or the other but no she kept driving in the middle of two lanes and not straight either, she was swaying the car right and left right and left. The rain wasn’t the only distraction, she had just met me and ... read more

I woke up and got ready in less than 7 minutes. I walked to the bus stop and I got on the 840 bus. As I swiped my Daegu card, the machine said something in Korean. It was probably out of money. I knew it was 1100 ( $1.10) but I didn’t have any coins on me. Also it took a very long time to find money in my purse. So embarrassing because when you put money into the machine, it only dumps it when it has the exact change. The machine kept on making clicking noises. On top of that, because the bus was full, I was standing right next to the bus driver. I was surprised he didn’t say anything to me. Because I was all the way in the front, I was far ... read more

I flew a kite for the first time in my life and it was amazing. I looked up and there were about 20 kites flying around. Everyone was running around and trying not to get tangled up. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. Today was just a perfect day to fly a kite. We actually made these kites from korean paper and wrote our wishes on them. I guess in Korean culture, they write their wishes and fly them to the sky and cut the string. They let the wishes go freee!!!! We went to a lot of great places today but I'm not really sure what their all called so I'll just post pictures. So last night, we were talking about our birthdays and I found a birthday buddy. He has the exact same birthday as me. ... read more

Yesterday was a LONG day of lectures. I suspect that's why today was a field trip day. We went to Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto as well as the tombs and Cheomseongdae Observatory. I went to the tombs and the observatory with my homestay family this weekend so it wasn't that exciting. I felt the temple visit was very rushed but I do remember one interesting thing, there was a whole area that was covered in cairns, rocks stacked on top of eachother. There is only one other place that I've seen cairns and that's on the trail. I saw plenty on the Pacific Crest Trail. Good samaritans had placed them in areas where snow or a fork in the road might confuse a hiker. The cairns were used to guide people. I was wondering if ... read more

We just got back from our homestay weekend. My family was the Kims from Gyeongju. The father introduced me to dae gum, a korean wind instrument. He told me he was a beginner but he played very well in my opinion. He tried to explain the meaning of the song Arirang to me in English and he managed. I think I spoke to him the most and although his english and my korean were limited, we managed to get our points across. He was very interested in how to improve his english and remembered every english word I told him. The mother is an amazing cook and her kimchee has to be the best I've ever had, every meal I had in their home was delicious. Yesterday at lunch we had ddukgook(rice cake soup) and ddukbokgi ... read more

I'm sitting here thinking about this past week and how to sum it up. The thought that keeps popping into my head over and over again is that monks are tough! At the beginning of the week Lindsey and I did whats called a temple stay. We took a bus out to the woods, hiked to a Buddhist temple and stayed with the monks there. I now know why you see pictures of sleek looking monks that seem calm and content in their lives. I had envisioned a lot of meditation and yoga to center and calm our souls. What I got was a serious workout. The Golgul Temple we stayed at specializes in Sunmudo, a form of Zen martial arts that was secretely handed down through the centuries through Buddhist families. Every morning they get ... read more

So it's been a couple of weeks since I wrote in this thing. The last month has flown by. So much has happened and changed. I've changed and things around me are becoming normal. About a week ago I started to feel like a daily grind was in place. I'm now sick of Korean food and I am craving cheese and familiar food like crazy! At first all the fish, kimchi and mystery meat for exciting and exotic but now lunches are 30 minutes that I'm constantly looking at the clock till I can get back to my desk to eat home brought snacks. The teachers have to eat the same lunch as the kids. I eat with Green and Red class and Tamara Teacher. (That's what the kids call us. Our first name and then ... read more
