After leaving Jeju Island I returned to Busan where I stayed for five days or so just relaxing and enjoying the beach. From there I went to Gyeongju where I had a reservation at a hostel. When I showed up to the hostel they said that it was all full. I felt like Seinfeld trying to talk to this guy. He told me that if I wanted I could upgrade for $10 to another room. I told him that I wasn't going to pay any more money and that I had a reservation. He finally just kept saying that he didn't speak English and to come back at 6pm when someone else would be there. This infuriated me, it was noon and he spoke English just fine to the guy ahead of me and most of ... read more

Happy Canada Day to all you Canucks back in the mother land! The fact that no one knows this holiday here makes us miss home even more! The fireworks, the parades, the day off work! Today also marks the official 2 month mark until we leave Korea! But, that does not mean we are coming home! More on that later, but we will be traveling in Asia for 100 days before returning home in December! So what have we been up to the last couple weeks? Mostly, World Cup! Seeing as Korea actually has (had) a team in contention, there was a great atmosphere here! We bought Korea shirts and took to the streets and stadium as any proud Korean would do, cheering with the crowds "Dae Han Min Gook" (the great Korean people!). Alas, the ... read more

Before I start, since our last post we have now surpassed the 100 day mark in Korea, a small milestone on a road which will have many more… The latest learning curve we have experienced on our Korean cultural awakening is that when it comes to national holidays, even if it is only a single day, the whole country is on the move! This lesson was sharply followed by the next…never, under any circumstances trust the local weather reports! At the end of May, the official day of Buddha’s Birthday is decreed a national holiday in Korea. As this fell on a Friday, we thought it wise to use the long weekend to our advantage and explore parts of Korea a little further afield. After deciding on the ‘outdoor museum’ that is Gyeonju (more on that ... read more

Hilarity ensues. Sorry if you guys got that last e-mail. For some reason, it published while I started writing it. Oh well. Anyway, this entry is dedicated to Buddha, who made this entire trip possible. Thanks, Buddha, for having a birthday that allowed us to have a three-day weekend. Our trip started off on Friday morning. Originally, we were all to meet up at the bus station at 10:30. However, as our entire weekend extravaganza was actually Ally's birthday weekend extravaganza, a few people were a bit hungover. Ally couldn't find our friend Katie, so we pushed our meeting time to 11. Katie was located, but then Adam was running late. We got into the bus station after noon. We bought our bus tickets, most of us together, and then they hand us one ticket. "One ... read more

On Saturday we went to Gyeongju to see the Seokguram grotto. Something that was apparently very cool that Ronald had seen advertised. It was raining pretty hard, but we took a bus from Busan (pretty nice for 4,000!!!) and then had to take a local bus to another part of the city. I had to go to the bathroom so we got off the bus too early and used public restrooms at a museum. Then we waited about 30 min for the next bus to come and that one took us to the stopping point for the bus that takes people up to the grotto. After taking that bus, the driver told us that the next bus was at 6:20. At this point it was about 5 pm. So Ronald went back to ask about the ... read more

Just a quick note...I can't even believe it's been over a month that I've been living and working here. There have been a lot of ups and also some downs. Most days I have those "I love Korea!" moments. They usually involve food...hahaha. The food here is amazing, not just Korean food, but also the markets! We made spring rolls last week and the fresh veggies were so cheap. I'm also trying to get more involved...Cindy and I went to Daegu to volunteer for an animal shelter. They walk dogs at a popular park in Daegu and hand out fliers about their shelter to try to get the animals adopted. It makes me really want a dog, but knowing my work schedule and the lack of space here, it would be hard to have a dog. ... read more

Last Friday, we got word that a new teacher was coming so I figured we'd meet up with her that night since I remembered my first night in Pohang and how disoriented I was...I didn't even know where the school was the next day and I had to be there! The new teacher came too late though (too late = 11pm) and I was too tired to even go out and see her. Fridays basically suck the life out of me so I wanted to just sleep. The next day, Cindy and I picked up the new teacher, Bobbie, and took her out to lunch. She still seemed a bit disoriented and didn't want to be the one to decide on where to go for lunch so I decided to go to the rice porridge place ... read more

An example of making do with what’s leftover in the fridge. It was pretty delicious, I fried the tofu in olive oil until brown. I then placed it on the plate and covered it lightly in soy sauce. Next I lightly pan fried the cherry tomatoes by themselves and added soy sauce and sesame oil when they were soft. Once on the plate, I added kimchee. I love the kimchee juice mixing with the rest of the sauces. On the right are peppers with daenjang (bean paste). It was really good for an impromptu meal :)... read more

So I made rice for the first time in while.. pretty basic weekday meal: Rice, Kimchee, geem (seaweed sheets/nori), and bean paste to go with the peppers and kkenip (sesame leaves). The apple there is just an afterthought... read more

Officially finished my second week of teaching, I'm slowly finding a groove. I still get confused sometimes on what I'm supposed to teach or what homework I'm supposed to check since the Tuesday and Thursday schedules are a bit different than Mon/Wed/Fri. Some intriguing stories from the last couple weeks: - I got $35 worth of free stuff from the 1000won store! There's a Daiso in Jukdo Market downtown where I've been doing a lot of my weekend shopping lately. For those of you who don't know, Daiso is a Japanese chain of dollar stores and I loooove it! They even have them in California and my cousin took me there last November. So, I had a really long list of things I wanted to buy and found a lot of stuff at the Daiso. My ... read more
