This place is so great for families with kids / dog owners / couples / singles etc. Its truly a great way to escape the city for a few hours or a few days! Jungdo Island is located really close to Chuncheon city centre. Buses 74 and 75 drop you right outside the ferry terminal. These buses are very infrequent however. We ended up taking a cab from Emart/Intercity bus terminal. The cab was 3000 won. The ferry terminal itself is small with several small convenience stores. A return ticket and admission to Jungdo Island is 5,300 won per adult. Dogs are allowed and we saw several other dogs while we were there! The ferry runs every 30 minutes (between 09:00 and 17:00) to and from the island and takes around 7-10 minutes. Once you get ... read more

We don't want to make it seem like we don't do any work around here, but we had the last week in February off school so we decided to make the most of the week (well, half of the week - the first half we spent watching Olympics at every possible moment - which was difficult with a 17hr time difference, but we managed to see most of the important things!) and rented a car for a little 5 day road trip with 2 friends, Eric and Moiz. We left on Wednesday morning in our shiny new Kia Forte Hybrid ready (and a little worried - I mean, Korean drivers?scaryyyyyy!) for the road ahead. We packed the trunk with all our hiking gear and hit the road with Eric and Mike alternating driving as they were ... read more

No, I lied...no fishies were caught this past weekend. But WHAT a weekend. I had pretty much decided to cross off the months of January and February when it came to exploring and travelling just because it was cold, icy, and just not-cool weather (geez, listen to this Canadian complain) for exploring the country. HOWEVER, when Adventure Korea e-mailed me about an upcoming "ice fishing festival" trip on their website, I just couldn't resist. And boy, did I make the right choice. This past weekend was two fun-filled days of ice, snow, hiking, sancheoneo (mountain trout), bbq, and jet-fueled bonfires. I left Daejeon early Saturday morning to catch the KTX to Seoul in order to meet up with Adventure Korea at the Express Bus Terminal station. I was wired with excitement which resulted in complete lack ... read more

I noticed that there were not many photos of autumn in Seorak Mountain (aka Seoraksan National Park), so I'm posting some from a trip last year. A lot of native teachers headed to the mountain in September and early October. By chance, we ended up going the last weekend of October and it was completely different from what other people experienced! I had already seen many of the vibrant red maple trees on the way to the mountain, but when we entered the park, the first words out of my mouth were, "Oh my god. So this is what autumn's supposed to look like." *insert jaw drop* I recommend heading out early (before 11am, at least) because the park gets more and more crowded. Still, despite the amount of people, the terrain is spacious. Entrance fee ... read more

Chuseok is Korean Thanksgiving. Although Koreans have a few major holidays, Chuseok is said to be the biggest of them all. It is when Koreans return to their hometowns to eat, drink & be merry for a few days. The female Koreans we know complain that it will be a few days of cooking and cleaning. The men seem to have the easier end - eating, drinking and talking. All in all though, it is somewhat similar to the American Thanksgiving in that you spend time with family, catch up on what has been going on and give thanks for what you have. We had considered going to Chuncheon for a few months before we finally got the opportunity. We even got on the train one time thinking that it was only about 20 minutes away ... read more

There are so many unique experiences on offer in Gangwon-do! You must try the Jeongseon railbike - you get to pedal along an old railway track at the foot of the mountains. It makes you feel very small! Then you can take the seatrain to a famous beach - it's the world's closest trainstation to the water! ... read more

Wow a week flies! The folks kept themselves well occupied checking out the sights and sounds of Seoul, Incheon and the surrounds and then it was Friday again, much to my delight. We had been invited to have dinner with all the staff from school and admittedly I was worried cause I had been told that we were going for a traditional Korean meal, how the three of us were going to make it through a traditional Korean meal without being rude and declining something that looked undesirable, was going to be a challenge. Lucky for us at the last minute there was a change of plan and Japanese was on the menu. Boy oh boy what a treat the meal was absolutely amazing. At this point, while possibly not good to admit, I should mention ... read more

On a sunny Sunday afternoon wanting to get outside and explore we decided on the Cheongpyeongsa temple. I had been there just a week before on Teachers' Day and really enjoyed the 30 min hike from the parking lot to the temple. There is little online about directions to the temple and those that are available only give directions coming from Chuncheon. However it is possible to get to the temple from Hwacheon. We took the No.5 local bus from the terminal in Hwacheon and took it all the way to the end of the route. A small village past Ouem-ri called.......... From there you have to hitch a lift for the 15 minute car ride to the temple. I would have happily taken a taxi but there are none in this village. From what I ... read more
