Sorry it took me so long to get another update up. I've been lazy. It's been an eventful two weeks. I've been back to Seoul, lost in the Korean Wilderness, and to a Mexican burrito party. To weekends ago I met up with my friend Ryan to go to Seoul for the weekend. We had a three day weekend, so before we went in I spent the night at his house Thursday night. He lives in a really small town way up into the mountains. The only way to get there is to take a cap from the closest bus stop. I told the cabby where to go, and he seemed to understand. Things were going fine until he drove right through the town where Ryan lives and just kept going! I tried to tell him ... read more

This week wasn't too eventful. I had a full week of teaching which seemed to drag on forever. I have more than 20 classes a week, so by the time Friday arrives I'm ready for a break. Teaching went well this week. Most of my students were willing to participate. Sometimes they can be very shy though and are afraid to speak up when they are singled out. My co-teacher and I try to pick on them just to get them comfortable with talking on their own. I had two open classes this week where parents were invited to watch the class. I only had a small part in each. Both went very well. I just followed a plan that the homeroom teacher made for me. Afterward, I was invited to go out to eat with ... read more

Maar ... read more

Last week was the Korean holiday of Chusok. It's roughly the same as Thanksgiving. Koreans take time to give thanks and honor their ancestors. It also ment that I had a short week this week. Monday I was off work and Tuesday and Wednesday there were no kids so I had time to get ahead in my lesson plans. Some of the classes spend four weeks on one topic, so coming up with new ideas for plans can be hard. I finally got moved into my apartment last week too! I moved right at the beginning of the holiday, so most of my furniture wasn't there until Tuesday. I'm so happy to be out of the hotel. I have a huge pile of laundry that I'm still working on getting cleaned. No one here has a ... read more

Hey! This is a site I created to keep everyone up to date about what's going on with me in Korea. I've been here about a month, so I'll do my best to catch everyone up. I got here at the end of August. My first week was spent at orientation on the east coast in a city called Yangyang. It was beautiful there. Our hotel had the beach on one side and the mountains on the other. We spent the week in classes and going on field trips to differett nearby locations. Some of them were more interesting thatn others. I ended up skipping the last trip tp go lay on the beach instead. Some of the classes were helpful, but some wern't so much. I met some really cool people who I'll definitely be ... read more

Chuseok being a South Korean version of Thanksgiving, or so I'm told. At any rate, the important thing is that the ESL teachers get Monday off, so even though we have to have make-up classes on Wednesday, we still got to enjoy a three day weekend. Bright and early on Saturday morning, I hopped on a bus - which turned into a series of buses - and went to visit Seoraksan National Park on the northeast coast. The Sea of Japan reminded me of Maui, but no pictures because I only saw it from the bus. Saturday night I did a temple stay in a place called Baekdamsa (or Baekdam Temple) at the park's less-crowded western entrance. I'm not sure I can put into words how incredible the whole experience was, but I'll give it a ... read more

The folowing day i took the early bus to Geongju, said to be the kyoto of Korea. I had to agree with that, the city hosted some great temples and palaces. The difference with the japanese temples/ shrines is that the Korean ones are smaller, but much more colourfull. I was amazed by the beautifull painting of animals and gods. Half the day i visited some temples before going by bus to Daegu, the third largest citie in Korea. Wel known about its famous herbal medicine market, here you find the fairytale powerdrinks such as reindeer horns, strange leafs, ginseng roots, salamander tails, pork feet, etc...etc..it was interesting for a short walk around this area. Later on i went to the biggest market in asia with around 4000 shops...It was so interesting to see what and ... read more

This summer's traveling has been a little bit discouraging due to all the rain. However I have had one fun trip this summer to Namiseom Island. It was set up by the Hannam Village church. The guys got to go participate in paintball and the ladies went to the actual island itself which is about 2 hours by bus outside of Seoul. The island was full of trees and alot of things to do like a train ride around the small island by UNICEF, a pool, bicycling, Dr.fish, jet boats. Banana float rides and lots of artistic things on the island to see. We got drenched but still proceeded to take in everything to do. We had a blast even as our toes squeked with water in our shoes. My favorite was pedaling the 6 persons ... read more
