We took the subway from Seoul all the way out to Chuncheon. It is great that the Seoul subway system is so extensive and cheap, but it was a long journey. The subway was packed so it was standing room only. I ended up standing the whole way, for an hour and a half. It was nice looking out of the window watching the city turn into countryside. At Namchuncheon Station there was a coach waiting for us. It was nice to finally sit down. We drove through Chuncheon to Uiam Lake. The drive didn't take too long. We sat near the lake and took in the views. It was a glorious day, sunny but with a nice breeze to stop it getting too hot. Since we were a very big group we had to split ... read more

We took the shuttle bus from Jamsil at 9:40 am. The bus is easy to book, I think you just ring a number on the Nami Island website, transfer the money and they send you an email receipt, which you give to the bus driver and he gives you your bus and ferry tickets. Our bus driver was worried because we didn't have return tickets, but we explained that we weren't coming back on the shuttle. The bus journey was really quick. I'm sure it only took about an hour. Once we arrived at the ferry terminal, we headed straight to the coffee shop to get our caffeine fixes and have a good natter. We finally managed to drag ourselves away from the cafe, and we got on the ferry to head across to the island. ... read more

Today it's Friday - and that makes me happy - as it means the weekend is upon us baby. And this weekend we have a long weekend as it's memorial day on Monday. I'm sitting at my desk right now indulging in rice "That's why I put on weight" cakes from Korea. GOD they are delicious. Here's the good and the bad news of it - the good is that my allergies have COMPLETELY gone away as eveey desssert here is literarlly made up of only rice and sugar (goodbye butter/milk etc!) but the bad news is well it's rice...RICE all the time! However, I am not here to write to you and grumble, so I'll move on as I put the fifth piece of rice cake into my gob! First things first, I'll start with ... read more

Right...so here I am! A few weeks in and starting to find my feet in Korea.... This week I'm observing and getting a feel for the classes I'll be teaching - I'm teaching boys and girls, and let me tell you I get the feeling the boys will be a handful. The problem is the kids over here are bored shitless in their English classes - so they need to be awoken - I almost feel like bringing a bloody firework into my first class and letting it off. They are so excited about having a 'real' English teacher teach them...I'm hoping they will at least partly behave for me. Although we are warned to be strict aka not crack jokes, not be there 'friend' for a few weeks - that's right, I've got to try ... read more

Annyong! I'VE TOUCHED DOWN IN SOUTH KOREA BABY! So, I arrived at my EPIK orientation in Daejeon after 16 hours of travelling! That night, I met my awesome roomy Cateline (a lovely Irish girl) , and she took me out on the town (this is another big city a couple of hours out of Seoul) where I met heaps of expats. And got so many emails! ha, gotta make friends somehow. BUT anywho, onwards and upwards, got taken to my apartment last night. And can I just say WOW! This lovely Korean lady Young - my co-teacher - who I'll be teaching with...said it was as big as her apartment (that houses her famiy of 4!) but my god , she wasn't wrong! I'm talking THREE BEDROOMS, a big living area, two balconies....overlooking Chencheon city...very nice! ... read more

Alas we awoke to alarm bells ringing at 4:30 am, after six hours of slumber in our beds as we stumbled around beneath the covers wishing for more time to sleep. Pressing her snooze button only once, Shauna bounded out of bed ready to press the coffee pot into action and climb into her already running hot shower. It wasn't yet in me to venture out of the bed where I lay eyes sleepily awake pressing the snooze alarm another couple of times, wishing I hadn't agreed to go on another Korail trip. Thankfully all we had to do this morning was wake up, eat a light snack, drink a fresh cup of java and head out the door to catch the early morning express bus to Hapjeong station because we had packed our day bags ... read more

Chuseok is a famous Korean Holiday not too unlike Thanksgiving in America. Thanksgiving is one of my all time favorite holidays, and I find myself increasingly sadder knowing I won’t be home to celebrate it this year. While we hope to plan a comparable substitution among friends here in Korea, it’s difficult to match up to the food, booze, and family fun that go hand in hand with Thanksgiving at home in New Hampshire. However, I am sure I can somehow find a way of enjoying myself blacking out at my friends apartment after too much Soju almost as much as I do with Wild Turkey Whiskey back home. Chuseok, though nothing at all like Thanksgiving the way we celebrated it, was an amazing 5 day break from classes and I think it is safe ... read more

This place is so great for families with kids / dog owners / couples / singles etc. Its truly a great way to escape the city for a few hours or a few days! Jungdo Island is located really close to Chuncheon city centre. Buses 74 and 75 drop you right outside the ferry terminal. These buses are very infrequent however. We ended up taking a cab from Emart/Intercity bus terminal. The cab was 3000 won. The ferry terminal itself is small with several small convenience stores. A return ticket and admission to Jungdo Island is 5,300 won per adult. Dogs are allowed and we saw several other dogs while we were there! The ferry runs every 30 minutes (between 09:00 and 17:00) to and from the island and takes around 7-10 minutes. Once you get ... read more

Chuseok is Korean Thanksgiving. Although Koreans have a few major holidays, Chuseok is said to be the biggest of them all. It is when Koreans return to their hometowns to eat, drink & be merry for a few days. The female Koreans we know complain that it will be a few days of cooking and cleaning. The men seem to have the easier end - eating, drinking and talking. All in all though, it is somewhat similar to the American Thanksgiving in that you spend time with family, catch up on what has been going on and give thanks for what you have. We had considered going to Chuncheon for a few months before we finally got the opportunity. We even got on the train one time thinking that it was only about 20 minutes away ... read more
