Wow a week flies! The folks kept themselves well occupied checking out the sights and sounds of Seoul, Incheon and the surrounds and then it was Friday again, much to my delight. We had been invited to have dinner with all the staff from school and admittedly I was worried cause I had been told that we were going for a traditional Korean meal, how the three of us were going to make it through a traditional Korean meal without being rude and declining something that looked undesirable, was going to be a challenge. Lucky for us at the last minute there was a change of plan and Japanese was on the menu. Boy oh boy what a treat the meal was absolutely amazing. At this point, while possibly not good to admit, I should mention ... read more

April 15 So today I hit Busan. Dana dropped me off at the bus station and I took the short 1and 1/2 ride down. The first thing I did was go to the center of town to mail my guard application. Well see if it makes it home before I do or not. Haha then I walked around a little bit just to busans needle like tower. I opted not to go up though because it was pretty hazy and nasty out. I didn't think I'd see much. Then I headed to Hae-unde beach. When I was getting out of the subway a guy started talking to me and even gave me 10cents because I was short on coins when I got out. He was nice. He pointed me in the direction of the beach and ... read more

This summer's traveling has been a little bit discouraging due to all the rain. However I have had one fun trip this summer to Namiseom Island. It was set up by the Hannam Village church. The guys got to go participate in paintball and the ladies went to the actual island itself which is about 2 hours by bus outside of Seoul. The island was full of trees and alot of things to do like a train ride around the small island by UNICEF, a pool, bicycling, Dr.fish, jet boats. Banana float rides and lots of artistic things on the island to see. We got drenched but still proceeded to take in everything to do. We had a blast even as our toes squeked with water in our shoes. My favorite was pedaling the 6 persons ... read more

Lol, It's me again. I didn't wanted to overload one entry by picture. So here is the second part. After Yongin, Chuncheon. This 2 town are only 1 hour from seoul. Yongin is situated at the south of seoul and Chuncheon at the east. We went in Chuncheon on saturday, with Una, Ahyoung's friend. There we met a friend of Una. He brought us to a lake, we took a boat to cross this lake and go to walk along a river. Then we arrived to a temple. Still same, all beautiful, and nice to be back in the countryside. The sunday, Una left, but her friend, and some of his friend, and Ahyoung and me (sorry, it's a bit confuse, but my english is not enough good for this kind of situation, lol) ; we went ... read more

We caught a bus from Sokcho to Chuncheon, a major city in Northern Korea. Ciaran managed to "mildly" upset the bus driver over where we put our bags but after a brief standoff we were on our way. Two and half hours later we arrived and found ourselves a dodgy motel shaped like a castle to stay in. The next day we spent most of the morning trying to find the major tourist attraction in the city - the lake which we eventually stumbled across. We visited the statue park beside the lake and a Korean war monument dedicated to Ethiopian Soldiers who died in the war. After that we wandered around but found very little to do. After a lot of walking we headed back and watched a movie in our dodgy motel. Next Stop Seoul ... read more

I should be writing a speech for my Korean class right now (yes, I am at the point where I can write speeches-- crazy!), but instead I'm writing here. I had a pretty fun week this week, so I figured I'd update as I could. First of all, I had my final round of teaching at Camp Fulbright. I taught a low/low-intermediate level, and it was definitely tougher than the advanced kids. Still, I think it went well, and I'm looking forward to teaching again. In other news, two nights ago, Christina and I went out with our karaoke friends again. They invited us out to dinner (for a local specialty called dakkalbi-- a spicy chicken dish), and so we went on Friday. Afterwards, we got coffee and talked some more. It was really fun seeing ... read more

So, I had my first experience at the norae-bang (karaoke) last night. It was very interesting-- and quite fun-- and goes along with an interesting story. Christina (my roommate) and I were sitting at dinner last night when two Korean girls sat at our table. There are plenty of Koreans in the dining hall at all meals, but usually our two camps (the Fulbrighters and the Koreans) don't converse-- largely due to language issues, obviously. Well, evidently, the two girls who sat down with us spoke English very well and were wondering what all these Americans were doing here. So, at dinner, we had a nice chat with them, and when it was done, one of them said, "We'd love to practice our English. Do you want to go to a norae-bang with us?" Well, Christina ... read more

This week was a rather eventful week. First, the university where I'm having orientation is currently hosting "Camp Fulbright," an English-intensive, two-week-long camp for Korean elementary to early high school students. So, although former ETAs are leading the bulk of the camp, we each get the chance to lead two classes-- including making lesson plans, etc. So, I taught a real class for the first time on Tuesday. My roommate and I actually co-taught it (we had that option for the first time we did it), and it went over really well! So, that was exciting! This biggest news of this week, however, is that I received my placement for the year. I will be teaching in Yeosu (pronounced Yaw-soo), a city of about 325,000 people on the south coast of Korea. I will be teaching ... read more

This weekend, the Korean Fulbright office treated our group to a trip to Songni-san, a national park in the heart of Korea ("san" means mountain, so it's obviously a great place to hike and has several trails). It was a fabulous visit, replete with plenty of relaxation, hiking, and good food. We left early on Friday, and it was about a three-hour bus ride. When we got there, Mrs. Shim, Korea Fulbright's executive director, took us all to lunch at a local restaurant. We all sat on the floor, cross-legged and shared all the little dishes that were placed on our tables (the traditional way of eating in Korea-- you get your own rice bowl, sometimes soup bowl, and then you share all the different dishes on the table). That afternoon, Nika (another Fulbrighter) and I ... read more

Will a blog really work out? Is my small life here in South Korea reallly worth a "travel blog" attempt? As much as I occasionally feel like shrugging off my foreigner persona, I know that I will look back on this year in Asia as a sparkling moment, or a test of bravery and self-discipline. To write self discipline feels a bit militant, or stoic, but living out of context...much on my own, I realize how easy it is to slip into a negligent lifestyle. How many foreigners here began with the same enthusiasm - attempting to learn Korean, absorb the cultural idiosyncrasies *many phrases I use might not make sense, admittedly flaky with my wording* and find themselves stuck on the wall. Drunk with other foreigners, nonchalant with traveling. This, of course, is simply ... read more
