I bought my return ticket to Singapore, and when I go there, it feels like comming home again. I know the city, not completely, but well enough to walk around without a map, and that is really nice. this time I didn't have any plans in the city, since, I feel, I saw all, I wanted to see, when I was there about one and a half year ago. So this time it was "only" social, which I missed last time, I was there. I crashed at James place, which was really nice. In this way it was possible to see him a bit, which was kind of hard otherwise, since he had to work a lot while I was in Singapore, to be fair I did go to Singapore during a weekend, so that was ... read more

Now we have come the end of our SE Asia adventure I if think it’s time for a beer blog. I will give a brief review of each beer we have sampled and then give my top five pick of the pops countdown at the end. Some of the photos also document my travelling weight loss; I got weighed on one of them machines outside a 7/11 the other day and I reckon I have lost nearly two stones in five months. But don’t worry everyone, I have eaten like a fat girl at a cake shop for the last few weeks and I’m now starting to gain a few pounds again! So here goes:- 1. Tiger This is a beer that is pretty well known back in the western world but with its headquarters in ... read more

Well the holiday is almost over. We left London 2-3 days ago (I've lost count) after a quiet day. We didin't do any tourist sightseeing or museum visiting but instead walked through some of the London streets taking in the streetscapes. We did a little bit of shopping on Oxford Street, had a coffee in Soho and eventually found our way to Bond Street to see how the top 0.1% live; some of the jewels in the jewelry stores along Bond Street give the Crown Jewels a bit of a run on size, ostentation etc. We eventually made our way back to the apartment, had a brief rest, showered, packed then joined the sardine tin that is the London Tube at peak hour. Our trip to Singapore was just how we like it - uneventful. We ... read more

So it turns out you do need the city even though we have found even more awesome things in the airport- free sweets plus a slide! Just don't come into the city, as it's referred even though it's a country, without comfortable walking shoes and a credit card or six! We started our big adventure with an upgrade from the regional silk air carrier to Singapore Airlines the daddy of all airlines! It meant we left an hour early, got complimentary juices and plush seats with games even though only a 55 minute flight. We signed up to the tourist pass for unlimited bus and MRT use, getting the tube to the centre and to our digs just after 1pm. When we say digs this was slumming it for us! We know KL was awful but ... read more

Up early this morning after a great nights sleep (drug and alcohol induced). An hour at the gym at low intensity, (Tim fell asleep on the gym floor after his second push up (sad but true)). Back to the hotel room and a minor dispute about using each others towels. Satisfactorily resolved after frank exchange of views and small amount of cash (scottish bstard). Into China town for a great seafood and pork breakfast/lunch, back to Clark Quay for a couple of ciders. Heading off to airport now for overnight flight to Frankfurt and early moring train to Stuttgart. Kirk out!... read more

1st officers log * date 22/06/2012 After a 4.30am start were now in Singapore, stuffed (as in tired) and ready for food. A good flight but the programmed trip to the gym was less than fruitful. We'll start the exercise programme again tomorrow. Out for tea (dinner) in China Town and then an early night, ready to hit the gym and get those muscles pumping. Planning a trip to Sentosa, and a look at that new hotel - the one with the funny boat shape on top. Spock (he's really the hero of these things) out.... read more

We arrived at Singapore and knew straight away we were back in Asia when the humidity hit us! Air conditioning is once again our best friend! We spent our short time there exploring the market's in China Town. Tasting the cuisine in Little India (fantastic!!) and looking at the amazing architecture, the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. We did a lot of window shopping and pretended to be posh at Raffles Hotel.... read more

Tanjong Pagar Best-Kept Secrets - Dao Ji Ipoh Hor Fun Wednesday, 30th May 2012 There is this stall in Tanjong Pagar Market that I patronised quite frequently over the past few weeks ever since my office shifted to this area. The stall was manned by an elderly grandma who was probably in her 80s together with her middle-aged daughter. On the stall menu, there were only 2 items on offer – Ipoh Hor Fun or Macaroni. For $2.50 ($2.70 for take-away), my choice of Hor Fun came with a generous serving of mushrooms and fresh greens, 2 prawn dumplings and some chicken slices. What made my Hor Fun so special was their homemade gravy. If you noticed closed enough, you would probably realised that their gravy was heated up slowly over a charcoal stove. Yes, charcoal ... read more
