When I told my father I was planning on visiting the Philippines, he was less then enthusiastic about it and his voice over the telephone signified his paternal instinct kicking in. I understood the reason for his apprehension. The Philippines isn’t exactly written about favorably in the Toronto Star or any other North American newspaper. The Southern island of Mindanao is a terrorist island. This is widely known, accepted and all who wish for their safety, stay clear of it’s vicinity. Manila and the area I was to be visiting was thousands of kilometers to the North of Mindanao and just as safe as Toronto, well for the most part anyways! One of my fellow colleagues from the JET program, Nicky Furniss, was my travel partner for the 8 days we spent in The Philippines. ... read more

Well back in Manila, waiting for my flight to Thailand so am stuck in the airport for another 6 hours. The visit to my adoptive parents’ resting place in Cebu a couple of days ago was an emotionally exhausting experience, not having been able to mourn their passing a few years back. The visit made me realise that I have not had been able to deal with the loss in its full cycle. I could not hold the tears and wept for the first time (plus it doesn't help that "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien" by Edith Piaf keeps playing in my head. I hope I am not the only one in the world with the soundtrack of my life on the internal turntable!). I realise the impact that they both had in my life and ... read more

How time creeps on in its steady stride while we notice the little aches and pains! I felt my knee was sore (perhaps from carrying such a big pack) , possibly old injuries resurrected. Anyway today was very humid and dusty, Cebu is alive and well, lot’s of trading going on from the street peddler to the international currency market (such as my distant relative who part owns a bank!). I met with old friends and my banker relative who took us to the local go-go bar (lol)! That is the last time I let someone choose where we go next (smile). Anyway, after some awkward moments, we had a couple of beers and left to ponder on our teenage years. It was nice to catch up even for a brief moment, so much to say ... read more

Today as my taxi drove past the cinema, I noticed a banner ad for the movie “Man on Fire” with Denzel Washington. About 10 years back, I read a book by A.J.Quinnell called “Man on Fire” (1980) about a shot at redemption of an ex-dog of war, mercenary. Common plot but I am always drawn to this kind of stories. The book is an excellent read, though. I truly got excited at the prospect of watching this film, half hoping that it did not stray much from the novel by A.J.Quinnell, of which I am a fan. Anyway, today we were scheduled to watch “Feng Shui”, a local horror flick. Everybody that suggested that we see this movie got ear bashed by me after. I must admit I partly enjoyed it and cracked me up like ... read more

one can experience the allure of a philippine country life in villa escudero. we arrived at the villa at 9am (it was a two-hour drive from manila). after registration, we were given a welcome drink of fresh young coconut at the clubhouse..we visited the museum who has vast collection of religious artifacts. then we roamed around the plantation onboard carabao drawn carts while being serenaded by the local folks at the same time.. how cool! we had a feast on a buffet lunch set in a flowing stream amidst tropical vegetation beside the waterfall. ... read more

Okay, I am sorry for the delayed updates as I was finding it hard to grab a hold of pc’s with a fast internet connection (due to very restricted time scheduling, I had to prioritise). If this is your first time in the Philippines, it would be of no harm to understand two basic assumptions of you the visitor, from them, the Filipinos. Firstly, you are a foreigner therefore you must be wealthy. This is (relatively) true to a degree. Filipinos tend to generally assume that since you are from the outside, that your life must be better in terms of monetary and material aspects. This assumption has been the norm for a time now and is accepted to be true. This is why there are many disenfranchised Filipinos who would rather marry a foreigner in ... read more

Arrived in Cebu from my Air Philippines flight (shaken and jarred from a little turbulence - the old aircraft does not inspire confidence, but the cabin crew did). Taxi stand charges a fixed rate of P250.00 (USD $4.44) from Mactan Airport to the city. This is the city where I grew up so I was feeling nostalgic as I saw familiar and not so familiar places. I find Cebu to be better than Manila in terms of accessibility and lay out. The people are not as aggressive too in comparison to Manila. Dubbed the Queen city of the south, it still retains that old colonial charm with its Spanish inspired houses and named streets. I arrived at noon to meet my sister in our old ancestral house (in very sad disrepair) and to my amazement, nothing ... read more

Arrived at precisely 18:45, 20th September in Manila courtesy of Qantas, still I regard to be one of the better airlines. Unreal to see the same aircrew staff (two at least) from 14 years back on my way to Oz. Flight service was superb and highly efficient. Love the balmy humid Manila evenings especially when already acclimatized, but always a shock to the system when not. Nevertheless, a very pleasant trip. The way out of the arrivals area was very quick, especially with an Australian passport and going through the diplomatic queue (by accident). Waiting at the baggage conveyor belt for my backpack was a joy, becauseas far as I remember, NAIA (Ninoy Aquino International Airport) never used to be this efficient. Finally got my pack on and started towards the taxi stand and sweating like ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Subic September 17th 2004

I’ve been working for almost three years here inside the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, but honestly, I have never explored the place since. Guess, I’m missing a lot from its wide array of offerings - beaches, duty free shops, hotels, bars, jungles, golf clubs, and many others. It's my birthday, and to break the monotony of my life, read as work, work, work, I spent it with adventure on two of SBMA’s latest additions of tourist attractions - Zoobic Safari and Ocean Adventure. Both places are located in the Naval Mag area which is approximately 15-20km from SBMA main gate. Transportation to this area is not accessible to public transport, so we hired a van to get us there. We made a fair deal on one of the transport services located in the Park-and-Shop. The driver ... read more
