it was our annual team building in the office. one of the perks in working with the government is: you get to travel around the country for free. we spent four days in boracay. "Boracay boasts of a sugary white sand and azure blue waters. The best part of the island is the four kilometer white beach. The surrounding water is shallow and the sand is finer and brighter than most beaches in the Phil archipelago. It is a perfect place for watersports also. one can partake in a smorgasbord of exhilarating aqua action - from swimming and snorkeling to scuba diving, windsurfing, sailboating, kayaking, boardsailing and boating. World renowned Boracay is an adventure island ideal for island hopping, hiking, trekking, caving, mountain climbing, biking and horseback riding. Trekking and mountain biking can bring even the ... read more

Part of the Pahiyas Festival tour is a side-trip to some churches in Laguna. We visited two old churches - the St Mary Magdalene Church in Magdalena, Laguna and the Majayjay Church in Majayjay, Laguna. Both churches were built during the Spanish Era, using "Polo" or forced labor. The churches' architectural design is every photographer's haven. Too bad, my digicam run out of batteries, so i just managed to take some snapshots thru my phone. Sigh, the digicam should have given justice to the beauty of the churches and should have complimented the deep blue skies. I should buy a spare bat, hmm, maybe, i should buy my own cam, since i'm into this "travelling cum photography" thing. First stop was the Magdalena Church. I missed it! Since my digicam is off, i didn't bother to ... read more

It began with the first beads of sweat that formed as I walked out of the Manila Airport and across the street toward big orange sign. “MABUHAY Neha, Amy, and Ginny!” The woman behind the sign, SCALA project Coordinator Sarah Grant, smiles and leads us to the bus terminal. Now, when you throw three Canadian volunteers, their huge backpacks and our project coordinator (nearly fluent in the local language of Tagalog!) together with a bus, Jeepney, tricycle, lots of diesel and no traffic lights you have the makings of my first glimpse of the Philippines. And it is just that - a glimpse. Scratching the surface of a nation that is resilient in all things; rising above a colonial past, widespread poverty and unemployment, corruption, and natural disaster. At once, I found everything intangibly but distinctly ... read more

Pahiyas Festival is a colorful feast in honor of San Isidro Labrador, the patron saints of farmers, as a thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest. Houses along the old streets of Lucban are artistically decorated with agricultural harvest, and of the very unique highlight of the festival, the "kiping". It is a wafer made up of rice that comes in different colors. The Lucbanons come up in different designs every year, as they showcase their artistic talents in decorating their houses. This year's Festival is so special, as it marked as the very first trip that i joined with the NACCI (Nature Awareness and Conservation Club, Inc.). I was so excited, that i barely slept on Sat night, hahaha. We almost missed the trip, coz we made a buzzer-beater arrival at Shell Edsa at exactly 515am, whoa ... read more

We were just lazing around, enjoying the holiday (labor day), when suddenly, we've decided that we'll visit Mt Arayat National Park. I haven't visited the nat'l park/resort for quite some time, considering it's proximity to our area. Located at Brgy San Juan Bano, Arayat, Pampanga, it is a dormant volcano with an area of 3, 715.28 hectares. On the foot of the mountain lies a park/resort with freshwater and natural falls directly originating from the mountain. The place hasn't changed much. It still has the same amenities w/c i adored in my childhood. The park has 3 freshwater pools, with really cool, freezing water. Ahhh, what a nice refresher from a very hot, hot summer. Was still anxious to climb on the 100 steps. But this time, i've got some minor injuries, maybe due to lack ... read more

I just had a recent trip to Donsol, Sorsogon. Donsol used to be a rustic and sleepy town in the Bicol region. However, during the year of 1997, news regarding the existence of whalesharks (locally known as Butanding) in its waters, entailed the boom of tourists and whaleshark enthusiasts in this area. Another must-do in this town is the firefly watching at night. It's similar to the Kuala Selangor Firefly Tour in Malaysia. Here you get to experience to paddle on a serene lake, while an abundance of mangroves lined up on each side. You can hire a small banca (a makeshift boat, don't worry it is safe) or a small motorboat but i suggest that you take a banca so that you can truly experience a tranquil and romantic boat ride. Best to go on ... read more

Decided to chill-out with some friends at the beach -- a friend generously brings us to Terrazas de Punta Fuego, an exclusive haven south of Manila. After a leisurely two-hour drive from Manila, we arrived at Terrazas and plunked our butts at one of the pavilions facing the beach. Had lunch at the resto and basically just goofed around the place. Going home, we stopped by Bag of Beans at Tagaytay for the customary pies and raisin bread then off to a fantastic dinner at Sanctuario. What a blast! ... read more

everytime we wanted to take respite from work, we could not think of any place but baguio.. maybe you know the reason why. but this time, we were in the city to attend a conference for 5 days. this particular visit was actually my 6th time to be in the city of pines. for 5 days, we were bound to be present at every session of the conference but then after the main agenda, the group could'nt resist the attraction that is synonymous to baguio so we have no choice but to go around the city. on our last night in the city, we also tried the night life as we hopped from one bar to another. the group initially planned to tour sagada and ifugao but i have to begged off considering that we ... read more

I had been hearing nice things about this new zoo, located in Montalban, Rizal. Since, its Jeric's Birthday, i convinced him to celebrate it w/ nature. Along w/ his brother, and our very cute niece, Sylvanna, we travelled, for almost an hour to Avilon Zoo. At 730 am, they were already waiting for me at Chowking Philcoa. It's friday, and i took my day off the office, and travelled all along from Pampanga. After we had our breakfast at Dunkin Donuts, we rode a jeep in front of Jollibee, en-route to San Mateo, Rizal. The jeepney fare was approximately Php 20.00/each. I was uneasy during the travel, coz i thought that we were losing the right track, coz i can't find the landmarks indicated in the Avilon Map that we brought with us. I was relieved, ... read more
