From the time our plane took off in Chicago and we landed in Manila it was 23 hours and 40 Minutes of traveling. I really don't want to go home because I don't want to get back on the plane! Really, it wasn't so bad. Thd flight was a little crowded and there were so many baby's but lucky they weren't sitting too close to where mom and I were. I watched wedding crashers 3 times, the fantastic four twice and this other movie with john cusak - I think it was called must love dogs. They had monitors on the back of the seat and our own remote controls that were embedded in the armrest that you can detach. They had games and stuff on there too. Mom and I played "Tetrix" - I think ... read more

This is the last leg of our Ilocos Tour. Please refer to the two previous blogs for entries on Vigan and Laoag. Pagudpud! After a really good breakfast of Laoag longganisa (it’s better than Vigan’s!) at Macy’s Diner, we met up with Carol and Hector for a day in Pagudpud. Pagudpud is around 78 kilometers, one-way, from Laoag. There are mini-buses that ply the route from Laoag. On the way, we pass by several Ilocos Norte towns. The roads are very good and driving along, you see snatches of dramatic landscapes: waves on a rocky shore in Burgos, Cape Bojeador Lighthouse, the windmills of Bangui, mountains and flatlands. We reach Pagudpud in 1.5 hours. The Beach We went to Arinaya Beach Resort. Entrance fee is P50 each and the beach huts P300. Day trip facilities were ... read more

Well, finally here’s the first entry of my Philippine travels. Sorry that it took so long to start, as it was a long 2 day flight and I spent a couple days getting used to my surroundings. But I will do my best to update my goings on over the last few days. I apologize in advance for the lack of pictures. The laptop dial up conection here at my uncle's house is very slow, doesn't work so good with pictures. I'll go to an internet cafe later, and post my next entry with pictures. First, the flight. I don’t know it’s a cultural thing, but whenever Filipinos fly home to family, they carry HUGE boxes, which we call “Balikbayan Boxes” in addition to our regular luggage. These boxes have chocolates, coffee, presents and other things ... read more

This is part 2 of our Ilocos Trip. Please refer to previous and next blogs for Vigan and Pagudpud entries. GETTING THERE According to our cuchero, we can either take the mini-buses or Partas going to Laoag. He said that if we take Partas, travel would take less than 2 hours. After a breakfast of Vigan longganisa at Aniceto Mansion, we set off towards the Partas bus station. We had to wait 1 hour before the next bus to Laoag came. The trip was boring and contrary to our cuchero’s tip, it took more than 2 hours. It was also double the price of the mini-buses (P121 each, I heard mini-buses were only about P50-60 each). We were meeting a cousin of a friend in Laoag who so generously offered to take us around Laoag. Carol ... read more

This is part 1 of our Ilocos Tour. Do check out the succeeding blogs for entries on Laoag and Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte. GETTING THERE Our Vigan adventure starts off on Christmas Day 2005. Armed only with half a day’s worth of research, money and clothes to last us five days, my sister and I boarded the Partas bus bound for Laoag City at 10PM. First discovery: fare has gone up 25% from P450 last May (according to my notes) to P600. The bus was clean and comfortable, with reclining seats, adjustable aircon vents (unfortunately, you can’t turn it off completely which was especially painful because it soon turned very cold) and best of all, the headrest has side supports so that your head does not fall off the seat as you sleep :) It being Christmas ... read more

Small Laguna Beach, Mindoro Nov. 29 - Dec. 5 Upon arrival to the Philippines, we headed straight away to Mindoro, a large island south of Manila. In the lagunas, we found a small area but nicely built up with mostly dive shops, bars and restaurants. We stayed with this nice Filipino family with 2 small children for Zachary to play with right down from the beach. The island is quite beautiful though the beach itself wasn't great. For my birthday on the 30th, we had a delicious steak and shrimp dinner in front of the sea which comes right up the restaurant stairs at night - high tide. I also did some diving and Justin went snorkelling at Mindoro is supposed to be one of the best places in the Philippines to dive. I haven't ... read more

We travelled Zamboanga and its nearby provinces Basilan Isabela, Dapitan City, Jolo Sulo sometime in 2005. Zamboanga is composed of three districts, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay. In Dapitan City, you will see the old house of our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, where he was exiled in 1800s. It is in this place where he inspiringly wrote his poems and started the Noli Me Tangere, etc. The park is facing the see and has a huge stone where he and Ms. Leonora had their sweetnothings together. Neaby is Dakak Resort, a manicured landscaped garden with planty of cottages and rest houses. It has a large swimpool and adjacent to it is a white sand sea shore. In Zamboanga del Norte you will see Lakewood, a lake ontop of the mountain. ... read more

Taking advantage of the long weekend, we decided to venture into the famous Taytay Falls in Majayjay, Laguna. Armed only with a friend’s vague memories of how to get there, we prepared for our adventure. GETTING THERE Leaving Makati at 2:30PM on Sunday, we hied-off to Alabang to catch any transport going to Sta. Cruz, Laguna. The bus ride (P29) via Skyway was a quick 20 minutes. Unfortunately, we had to wait for one of our friends at Jollibee Alabang so we decided to do some last-minute shopping of toiletries, etc. at the nearby 7-11. Since our “tour guide” said there were no food establishments in the area, we insured ourselves by buying our dinners at Jollibee. Two minutes away is the Alabang terminal where we looked for transport going to Sta. Cruz, Laguna and found ... read more

Cleaning up my files, I found this little article I wrote right after our trip to Malapascua in the summer of 2002. Just wanted to share it. Sadly, all our pics of the trip were in manual cameras so can't post them here. ========== Illumination in Malapascua I heard of Malapascua for the very first time in the October 2001 issue of Cosmopolitan. I was, for lack of a better term, smitten. I decided I just had to go. So I did. My boyfriend and I are avid supporters of Pinoy tourism. Once while watching CNN, we saw for the first time the wowPhilippines ad. No joke - we both got teary-eyed. It’s a great ad, one of those you can truly be proud of. While our friends dream of vacationing in foreign countries, we want ... read more
