If you buy enough penny bubble gum you can spend a dollar. I know that sounds really stupid but that is essentially what my week or so in Romblon Province has been. Lots and lots of penny bubble gum. When I first arrived in Romblon town, I figured the best story I was going to have been about getting here. After being around here for a week though, I have a different story. Romblon is the marble capital of the Philippines. Everywhere is marble. In the cheapest of guest houses you will find marble tiles and marble tables. I spent one day touring the marble craft shops, watching people carve and shape the marble. Saturdays are spent watching a local soccer meet which is locals vs. foreigners. Strangely Romblon for being a very out of the ... read more

This last week has pretty much been a brief, round trip of North Luzon, with the eventual destination of the famous Batad Rice Terraces. However, the adventure on this trip has definitely been in the journey as much as the final destination. Some of the individual jaunts have been epic to say the least, making Batad feel that slightly bit more special. Jaunt 1: Starting smooth was an overnight bus trip to Baguio, arriving at the awkward hour of 3am and hanging around in an internet cafe waiting for it to get light. I managed to knab a 2-seater to myself, admittedly, I think, because I stank quite bad. It might just be my paranoia (so I kept telling myself) as I'm not sure what the lady I was sitting next to said, but between her ... read more

El Nido, Philippines Jan 24-Feb1, 2006 Temp: 25C-32C Snow Cover: negative My ‘round the world trip has come to an end. Before I lay out my conclusive thoughts, I will write a little about the Philippines which to say the least has been a very pleasant surprise. Again, here is a brief index to this, my last blog entry: 1) FILIPINO ADVENTURE 2) OVERALL TRIP THOUGHTS 3) SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION 4) TRIP STATISTICS (North Americans are addicted to statistics… these, I presume you will find interesting) 1) FILIPINO ADVENTURE I flew into Manila via Hong Kong on January 23rd. I was expecting to find my pre-arranged hostel and hunker down for the night before heading to El Nido (north Palawan islands) early the next morning. After accepting an offer from the taxi driver, I found myself ... read more

BANTAYAN ISLAND, CEBU Was in Cebu yet again for work. Had lots of fun though because there were a lot of us. We were all booked in Marriott which we all thoroughly enjoyed because of the new beddings and pillows (truly fit for a princess!) and the great breakfast spread. Sunday was Chinese New Year so the hotel was bedecked in red silk lanterns. We were working over the weekend though so we weren’t able to do much except a little shopping at Ayala Center and a night-out at Mr. A’s near Tops Saturday night (which was perfect because it was Chinese New Year’s Eve and we could see the fireworks BELOW - yes we were so high up, the fireworks looked like they were coming from just a little above the ground). Anyway, after 3 ... read more

Before I start, Afsan, one of my fellow Mount Kinabalu climbers has also added some really great photos, so feel free to take a look, especially of the one of me completely wrapped in warm clothing on the summit. http://www.kodakgallery.com/ShareLandingSignin.jsp?Uc=y3whyk9.14lf6kah&Uy=mjlfr7&Upost_signin=Slideshow.jsp?mode=fromshare&Ux=0 I always seem to have trouble with buses and airports. In Belize, I got on a bus passing the airport junction and was told "next junction." "Airport?" "Yes, yes, next junction." Then on arrival at said junction - "Airport?" "Ah, you want airport. Last junction." And so proceeded to get off and was fortunate enough to hitch my way back in time. Getting to KK's airport was thus a déjà-vu experience - boarding the bus that said 'Airport", I asked the driver if the bus was going to terminal 1. "Yes, terminal 1, yes," was the ... read more

I've always believed that stupidity should be punished and it should have some cost associated with it. So her is the cost of my latest stupid moment. In nontangibles like time and such the cost is a missed Australian day in Perth, and about 8 hours of running around and standing in lines. Money wise this is the cost: 5000 Pesos = ~$10 $100 US 100 Hong Kong Dollars = ~ $15 Cost to get properly pissed in Makati (Buckhead, 6th Avenue, North (something in Indy) neighborhood of Manila) ~5000 pesos = $10 Cost for pics = 300 pesos = $6 Cost for phone calls 100 pesos = $2 Cost for fedex of stuff to somewhere maybe $50 Cost to US embassy for new passport = $100 total cost almost $300. Oh well its only money. ... read more

I spent the last few days in the town of Baler. Baler was made "famous" in Apocalypse Now. It was about this beach that Robert Duval decreed that "Charlie don't surf" Though not sure the fame really took off. You have to really want to get to this town. Its an 8 hour bus ride from Manila of which the last 4-5 hours is over a 1 lane dirt/gravel road through the mountains. Most Filipinos don't even know where or what the town is. But its beautiful. Its a small fishing/farming town with the mountains coming almost right up to the beach. Its also very secluded. I think there were only about 5 tourists in the whole place and one guy was there for 4 months studying rats for his PHD. I went there to learn ... read more

So I am going to post old pics for now from my travels around the Philippines, starting with my Holy week trip with my friend Ellie to the province of Cebu, where another good friend Chanda is from. Original plan was to spend the long holiday in Boracay, but since we were there last year for Holy week and then again for New Year's Eve, we decided to venture into 'alien' territory and packed our bags and hopped into a plane headed to Cebu. First night was spent bonding with Chanda, but the next day was something else. We crammed the half day to tour the city and its surrounding towns that were easily tourist attractions. I couldnt really compare Cebu to Manila because it would not have been an accurate comparison, have I had one, ... read more

The Philippines, being a tropical country, has a warm weather reaching up to 35 degrees centigrade during summer. Still, there is one place which is relatively cooler by 9 degrees from the lowlands - Baguio City. With this, this highland lives up to its title as the Summer Capital of the Philippines. Approximately 250km north of Manila, just a 4-hr drive away, one can experience the cool climate, taste the sweet strawberries, and be captivated with the marvelous sceneries in the highlands. Various transport companies serve the Manila-Baguio route, so its accessibility is also one of the many pluses why tourists flock to Baguio. Local transportation are also available - one can hire a taxi to go around the city. Places to Visit: Camp John Hay - Former recreation area of the US Military. This camp ... read more
