I'm back in Homonhon Island. I took the land trip again with Lina and her daughter this time. Emie's niece is getting married after the town fiesta. I'm glad to be back. My first stop is Habag town in Homonhon and afterward I'm going to Bitaugan to stay with Emie and her family. I walk around town with Lynie (Lina's daughter) and Liza, her cousin who lives there. I was able to visit Little Habag, a few minutes walk from the plaza (my point of reference; it's where the basketball court is located). We visited Mana Naning and her family. I didin't know there was another "baranggay" in Habag. I was not able to go there before. There are fewer houses here. I was able to talk with Mana Naning and she told me about the ... read more

May is the time of most festivities in the Philippines. "Fiesta". Many people from the cities would usually take time off to attend their town fiestas in the provinces. I went to visit a friend (whose only daughter is also my godchild). My friend Emie's cousin, Lina was also going home to Homonhon Island for the May fiesta. I took the land trip with her, with her son Nathan, and nephew Rigel. We took the Eagle Bus Transport. I almost backed out of the trip because the bus was "fully loaded" on the aisle. Passengers had a lot of things, boxes they put within their seats and on the aisle. And some passenger were arguing with Lina that our seat were theirs. It looked confusing inside the bus. But I thought of my friend and wanting ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Puerto Galera October 29th 1999

It was our semestral break in school. Me and my school buddies decided to go to puerto galera to have some fun. We boarded JAM transit in pasay going to batangas pier. As Puerto Galera was not yet fully developed (not sure) at that time, there was no tourist around except for a couple whom we met while we were having lunch. the place was very nice and actually almost paradise. am looking forward to visit galera again. "Puerto Galera is a coastal town well known among tourists coming to the Philippines for its numerous beaches ad many snorkeling and dive spots. The marine environment has benefited in recent years from the influx of tourist dollars. This has seen a huge reduction in the number of fishermen in the area, as they gain higher revenue from ... read more

This trip was for a wedding. We were based in Manila and had to go shopping a couple of times. It wasn't easy then to go too far, especially because we had to cross the whole congested city to go anywhere and that with the rainy season, some roads were difficult. In Manila we stayed in a middle class neighborhood. It was very comfortable, but we only had ac in one room, and temperature was well over 36 Celsius and 100% humidity all the time, so it was tough. In the city lots of slums, metal sheet "houses", but also very rich places, often side by side... which is a culture shock. Also, almost at every store in town, one or more armed guards. It's also a shock..but after a while you get use to it. ... read more

On the Road The plan leaving Siquijor was to hop across Negros Island and arrive at the capital city of Panay Island, Iloilo, where we’d then catch a 28 hour ferry boat crossing the northern Sulu Sea destined for Puerto Princessa, Palawan. Palawan is considered the final frontier of the Philippines. Most people fly to Palawan. For about $50 return flying is a good option. But we’re on a tight budget and boats are less than $50. That was the plan anyway. On Negros we made a brief stop at a cheap guesthouse run by an Australian man and his much younger Filipina wife. Down under he was in the cement business which had also taken over his place here. With a huge concrete wall meeting the ocean, concrete patio, concrete bungalows and concrete planters there ... read more

Looking Back: Bantayan Island - Dec. 1996. After Christmas of 1996, my friends and I planned an out of town trip. This was to be the first of the many trips we'll be having. Our first stop was Cebu City, we stayed at my uncle's place. My cousins were our tour guide. the first few days we visited, the Taoist Temple in Beverly Hills; Magellan's Cross across the Sto. Nino Shrine; a beach in Mactan. The food is inexpensive and local cuisine was superb. We took a fast ferry, Oceanjet 2 of Socor Shipping Lines to Sta. Fe, Bantayan. It is an island north of Cebu mainland. The fare was 300pesos/person and we left the port of Cebu at 5:30am. It was about 3 hours fast ferry ride. When we got to Sta. Fe, there ... read more

Geo: 12.9778, 121.141the ride down from Manila to Batangas was already a very windy and rainy experience...Little did I know that it was being part of an incoming super typhoon with 600km in diameter. The ferry did not want to leave because of extreme high seas that afternoon, so I decided to take a night in Batangas...Next morning...suddenly calm seas...For whatever reason there was a pocket of calmness within the wild surroundings of a taiphoon. People have said that the main typhoon is still far over the Pacific, near Palau Islands coming in from Guam. However the winds and rains have already picked up being part of a tropical depression.Upon arrival in Puerto Galera at noon, the sky w... read more

Asia » Philippines » Boracay January 7th 1993

Looking Back: Boracay - Jan. 1993. The first time I went to Boracay was after I met Margrit in Bangkok. She is from Hungary and has travelled a lot. I also learned about the Lonely Planet guides from her. At the airport in Bangkok, I bought several Lonely Planet guides, of course, I got a Phillipines guidebook. I travel in the Philippines but to places where I had relatives. I began to travel to Cebu in my late teens, I have an uncle whose family is based there. After my friends and I graduated from college, our first trip together was in Cebu. I'll have to write a blog about that trip. Back to Boracay, I went with my dad in 1993. We arrive at the island of Boracay at about 7:00pm. We took a ... read more
