Left my big backpack at the My Hotel reception, they promise to keep an eye on it while I am away for couple days, there's a jeepney that takes you to Ecoland bus terminal outside the hotel, the tip coming from the security guard, took maybe 20 minutes to get there. At the main entrance I waited for Maricar, Olan's friend, she is from Gen San and is willing to show me around her town. We agreed to meet up at 12noon but i have waited for over an hour and no sign of her! I told one of the baggage security guys if anyone asks (assuming it would be her) I am already gone. Some touts guided me to the Yellow bus terminal, then as I was about to get in the bus there was ... read more

flight from Manila to Davao took a good hour and a half and I slept right away. Arriving just before 6pm as we stepped out of the tube gate the 1st thing I notice is the strong smell of durian, welcoming me to Mindanao!! The terminal is nice and clean, after picking up my backpack I came out and waited for Olan outside, not 10 minutes later he showed up, 1st time meeting is always awkward but he right away made me feel at home, he is my 2nd Couch Surfing host. he has his own car and he immediately showed me around the city by night going through neighborhoods, the main drag, the bar area, what i noticed is they have their own version of jeepney, its much smaller and I thought immediately, my backpack ... read more

It's March 2009, LynLyn and I were coming in on the Suplicio Lines boat from Cebu. The night was rough. Crossing from Cebu the wind picked up pretty good and I don't think there was much cargo below. LynLyn was fine, thank God, she had taken here Drammamine about two hours before bed time. Badjao is a tribe in the Philippines that lives in boats. The People of the Sea or Sea-Gypsies. They are here in the port of Iligan. Listen carefully and you'll hear them calling to me because they see my white face ''americano". They're calling in English, "Friend, Friend!" and "money"...hahaha. This guy is telling me not to throw money and maybe he's right. I don't know. What does my subscribers think?...I only have one. What do you think honey?... read more

The security that is actually here, on site, is quite good. We often have a uniformed securty guard with a shotgun, then we have 2 plains clothes ex-army guys with hand guns that shadow us everywhere. We also have a squad or two of Philipine Army who follow us around when we're surveying in the mountains. We had one incident where a landowner who had already agreed to let us survey on his land changed his mind, or wanted more money, or something. Pretty soon, all the army guys had surrounded him and sat watching him. We still had to stop working for the day and let the community relations guy settle it. A typical day on this job begins at 5:30am. We have breakfast at a diner type place attached to our hotel. Then we ... read more

The world is far too beautiful to stay in one place forever. Every day I'm overwhelmed with it all. I guess that's why I'm always trying to capture the moment, but the pictures can never do its justice. You've got to be there, feel the water, and taste the air and so on. I'm never as happy as I am when I'm traveling, in the ports/ terminals, even on the plane and bus... there is something very appealing to me about being on my way to discovering something new. I make a conscious effort to avoid trendy destinations and seek out roads less traveled... We all know there are good and bad people anywhere we go in the world but forgive me if I disagree that any single location is the best place to be... For ... read more

After so much consternation over where to have our Team Building, Cagayan de Oro was finally voted 11/10 against Bethany Garden in Ozamiz City. Cagayan de Oro is about four hours away, to the east of Ozamiz (For those from Manila, it is 1 hour 15 minutes by plane). Cagayan de Oro is known for its White Water adventure (and also for the canopy walk in Malasag). For our team building, we hired a white water rafting company, The Red Rafts, to handle our white water rafting adventure. We were told over the phone that for Php900.00 per pax, the package will include snacks, lunch, transportation to and from the site. On the day of the adventure however, we were only given the lunch, although it was a sumptuous one. For starters like us, who never ... read more

Last Friday night after work, I took off on a weekend getaway trip to another regional island south of Cebu called Mindanao. I packed my backpack for the weekend to see one of my best friends for roughly 36 hours of non-stop fun. My friend Mike, who used to live in Los Angeles last year, moved back here to the Philippines for his corn milling business in an area called Initao Beach. I haven’t seen Mike since last year prior to him leaving nor have I had the opportunity to take time to go visit him since I’ve been here. I did tell him before he left that I would find a way to come visit him here in the Philippines no matter what. Thankfully, with the internship here at BigFoot I was able to ... read more

"Don't go to Mindanao. It's not safe" - Almost every Filipino we asked about the place before we went. "Of course it's safe! The extremists only kidnap people if they're worth kidnapping, like foreign journalists diplomats." - Bruno, French restaurant owner in Coron Town, Busuanga island, Calamian group. "We advise against all travel to Mindanao because of ongoing terrorist activity." - British Foreign Office. "It's fine, the fighting is concentrated in certain areas and as long as you stay away from those you'll be fine. Of course this sort of situation is liable to change and bombs occasionally go off in places far away from the fighting but for anything to go wrong you'd have to be very unlucky and be in the wrong place at the wrong time." Freddy, German backpacker. "It should be fine ... read more
