Lake Maughan Early in the morning of October 3, 2010 , everyone in the group is excited to see Lake Maughan. Sundae is busy distributing “pastel” , a cooked rice with fried beef chunks wrapped in banana leaves, to each of us. I bought 2 pieces for 5 pesos each. After 1 hour of waiting , the army truck arrived. There are 29 hikers and 3 army in the truck. We headed to municipality of Tboli. The truck leaved Koronadal City at around 7 am. To reach Lake Maughan, we need to pass a rough road for 30 minutes from the Tboli public market. While on travel, we saw plantation of banana, pineapple and corn. We passed the 2 rivers and the first river has a bridge while the other one has no bridge. If there ... read more

I reside in the Socsksargen Area in Mindanao, Philippines. So I'm going to talk about my hometown and its outskirts first of all. I grew up in Gensan, officially known as General Santos City, named after its founder Gen. Paulino Santos. It lies at the southernmost tip of the Philippine map, cradled between mountains and the seas. ------------------------- The article below narrating the history of the city is taken from the Wikipediahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Santos_City#History HISTORY OF GENERAL SANTOS CITY On February 27, 1939, General Paulino Santos led the first and largest batch of settlers organized under the National Land Settlement Administration to the shores of Sarangani Bay. The 62 pioneers, who mostly came from Luzon, industriously tilled Cotabato's fertile expanse of land. After this first influx of pioneers, thousands more from Luzon and Visayas ... read more

Filipinos don't realize just how beautiful Mindanao is. When Mindanao comes to mind, one word immediately pops out: WAR. Even if the news only headlines provinces like Jolo, Sulu and Basilan, most 'Pinoys' plan trips as far away from Mindanao as they can, thus ignoring the hidden and sometimes even exposed beauty of this southern island. I have been to different places in Mindanao and I had fun going there. One of my favorite places in Mindanao is Dakak Resort in Zamboanga Del Norte. When you enter the resort, you will be welcomed by their hotel staff who are incredibly friendly and impressively efficient. Other than having great service, the resort also boasts an amazing white sand beach. It also offers fine food. My only concern is that the hotel needs to upgrade its Wifi facilities ... read more

We spent a night at Iloilo city, one of the most developed area in Philippines. By morning flight we went to Davao, quiet boring city. Our hotel ‘My Hotel’ is at a busy street and the day never ends as if they were working, shopping, eating in three shifts. We had difficulty in sleeping. The first day we visited several shopping centers and spent most of our time at Victoria Plaza for purhasing pearls. This place may be an attractive area for pearls. One should feel that the sellers don’t cheet you. They are so honest and you can bargain to a very small amount. The second they we visited Samal Island (Paradise Island region) . We snorkelled at the corals and ate lunch by the sea. The next day we took a three hours bus ... read more

Running around like a headless chicken, arriving in Bongao from Sibutu i tried to make the Sitangkai boat, we got to the pier where it is docked and luckily it was still there but for a reason, it has broken down! i was told normally it leaves at 10am but they are repairing it and may leave at 1pm if not the next day, patience already gone, just had it with inter island travels in the south, I quit and called it a day! Made a decision to skip Sitangkai and book my 1st flight out for Zamboanga. SEAir is the only one that does the route, I went to the office it was shut for lunch but the manager is there and told me come back later with cash to pay the fare and I ... read more

Sibutu is a municipality in the province of Tawi-Tawi, Philippines. It is the southernmost municipality of the Philippines. It lies about 14 kilometers east of the coast of Sabah, Malaysia. To get to Sibutu one must have to start from Bongao so from Simunul I took a boat back. the boat arrived around 9am, my chaperone Alemar started asking around which boat is headed to Sibutu, he hops on the boats and ask for the captain or one of the crew for information. Finally we found our boat and we were told 11am it departs so we have time to walk around, we bought bottled water and had an early lunch at this Malaysian restaurant. we headed back to the big boat around 10:30am, it has 2 levels, we decided to go up the 2nd deck ... read more

Today I am off to visit another island called Simunul, where apparently an ancient missionary of Islam was buried, Sheikh Makhdum is his name. The first Muslims in the Philippines are said to have arrived at Simunul. The first Mosque in the Philippines was Built here by Sheik Karimul Makhdum. This Mosque is called The Sheik Karimal Makdum Mosque. Inside this mosque stands 4 hags where it is repainted every year. Anyways, getting there is really simple, just get on the boat from the Chinese pier. First I have to drop off my backpack at the hotel reception and make my way to the pier. I walked from Rachel's hotel, and started asking people at the Chinese pier where is the boat to Simunul, apparently there are 3 destinations to the island municipality, namely Tubig Indangan, Tampakan ... read more

Davao isn't normally a tourist destination for foreigners (Lonely Planet barely even acknowledges it) but I wasn't going to let that stop us from visiting my good friend Pearl. It ended up being super fun and a perfect intro to the philippines. Our flights to Davao were at ridiculous hours, but at least we made all of them. The first one left bangkok at 12:30 am on febuary 3rd, and was supposed to get in to manila at 4:50 am (1 hour time difference = 3 hrs 20 min flight). I barely slept on the flight because they kept turning on all the lights for some reason. It got in to manila 30 minutes early. Hooray! 30 more minutes to sleep on the benches at the airport. Our connecting flight left manila at 8 am, and ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Mindanao » Tawi-Tawi » Bongao February 7th 2010

The name of Tawi-Tawi is a projection of the Malay word "jaui" meaning "far." Prehistoric travelers from the Asian mainland would repeat the word as "jaui-jaui" to mean "far away" because of the distance of the islands from the continent of Asia. The word "Tawi-Tawi" was picked up to later become the official name of the province.Tawi-Tawi lies at the southwestern tip of the country. Irregular in shape, with splashes of white sandy beaches and rock-bound coasts, the province has 107 islands and islets with a combined land area of 1197 km² (462 square miles). Tawi-Tawi is an island province of the Philippines located in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). The capital of Tawi-Tawi is Bongao. The province is the southernmost of the country sharing sea borders with the Malaysian State of Sabah and ... read more
