If you've ever heard stories of Philipino hospitality, it's all true. If you've never heard of it, let me tell you. These people are so happy to see us that it's… crazy! It's like we're celebrities. When we got off the plane in GeneralSantos, pretty much everyone in the church was there to see us. Someone said it was like Old Testament times when Paul came off the ship and every single Christian went down to meet him. They put beaded necklaces around our necks and shook our hands and told us a million times welcome and that they were so glad we were there. They had a huge banner and took our picture with it. They got all of our luggage for us and loaded it up. I guess because of violence in some parts ... read more

It was summer when we decided to get wet and hop to the nearest island in Jasaan. It is an off the beaten tourist destination. It still has to gain popularity with the beach combers and sun worhippers. The island is an alternative destination with the least cost and less travel time compared to boracay or bohol. The White Island is known also as The Agutayan Fish Sanctuary. It is located about 5 kilometers from the municipality of Jasaan. The white island facing Macajalar Bay is about 5,000 square meters with pure white sand. The island is ideal for snorkeling, scuba diving and swimming. Why go far, when you can go near? ---------- For more information Office of Tourism Jasaan, Misamis Oriental Tel Nos. (08822) 760099; 760076 ... read more

Hello from a nice hot July. The big event this month was a wedding where I had to dress up and do the best man thing. Kai who has been working here in Lanuza with the German development service decided to get hitched up to a local lady - Jonnabelle. They are both in the marine biology line of work and met while doing a coral reef survey. The wedding was mercifully short on the service side (Ross and Heather take note!) so we got down to the food and party in record time. Most surreal moment had to be the judge (it was a civil service) checking a text message on his phone half way through the “I do” bit - Only in the Philippines! The other strange thing was the way everyone ate, listened ... read more

The opening picture this month is a very pretty snake that nearly killed me! It hitched a ride on my motorbike probably down from one of the forest sites where we had been that day. If I had seen it while going along the highway I would have probably crashed in panic - I have no idea if its venomous or not but wouldn’t like to find out. It appeared when I pulled into my house, my landlord shouted “Snake” I am looking on the floor to find it until he says “on your motorbike” I parked very fast! Its only small but…. After the elections last month, this month has been about getting back to work. For me that has meant an intensive round of inspections and survey work in the forest followed by going ... read more

I have been getting back to work as normal after doing the tour guide bit while my parents were here. If anyone is thinking of visiting this part of the world I recommend Palawan, the snorkelling at El Nido is like getting inside a giant aquarium. Being in the water with turtles, sharks and stingrays is all very cool. On the work side we have been planning a schedule of activities for the coming year mainly based on implementing the Forest Land Use Plan that I was working on for my first year here. This means we will be doing a programme of education activities as well as assisting local groups with mapping and paperwork to gain legal rights to land access. The most important activity will be to finalise a co-management between the local government ... read more

magine this - it is 4am on our first night in Lanuza and there is a commotion, the dogs (all three of them - white dog, black dog and brown pregnant again dog) are barking and there are raised voices as the guards are woken. In the morning we discovered that our neighbour had a cockroach crawl into her ear and had gone off to the local hospital, apparently quite a common occurrence. The cockroach was drowned with oil and then removal attempted but they had no aurascope and only removed the body so the next day she had to travel to Surigao to see the ENT specialist with equipment. A four hour trip on unmade roads, to have the head of the cockroach removed. It took just minutes with an aurascope to remove the rest ... read more

Hello all, I celebrated my one year abroad anniversary at the end of March. It feels like a long time and at the same time has gone very quickly. To mark the occasion I made a pig of myself by eating a whole bar of Green and Blacks Maya Gold (possibly the best chocolate in the world). In 14 months time I will be packing my bags and heading back home, that seems to be coming even faster than the first year went. For the grim food award this month I came across Young’s Squid Flakes and felt that I just had to try them, the company being named after me and all that. I can report that they are every bit as bad as as some of you might be imagining. Squid flakes are now ... read more

Iligan City is a two and a half hours drive from Opol, Misamis Oriental. We left Opol at 1pm and arrived at Iligan City at around 3:30pm. Upon reaching Iligan, we proceeded directly to Maria Cristina Falls as it was our destination in the first place. After visiting the Iligan City Hall, we didnt have much time to roam around the City of Iligan because of limited time as we had to go back to Opol that same day. "Maria Cristina Falls is a waterfall in Mindanao Island (Lanao del Norte) and a landmark of Iligan City, also known as the City of Majestic Waterfalls. It is located 8.5 kilometers away southwest of the city proper. Well-known for its natural beauty and grandeur, the 320 feet high waterfalls is also the primary source of power ... read more
