Discovering the Philippines: One island at a time... Potipot March 21, 2008 11:00 PM We were so excited to leave our condo and head off to our destination - Potipot Island. We hailed a cab and asked the driver to bring us to Victory Liner Bus Terminal - Caloocan. It was still early and we were not on a hurry knowing that the bus terminal is just 20mins away from our place. I managed to buy tickets 7days before our trip just to make sure we don't run out of seats since it was holy week. I know for a fact that everyone from Manila would go out of town every holy week to escape the busy life in the metro. I can't remember exactly how much the tickets were but as far as I can ... read more

WARNING!! You will notice that there some grammar, tense and spellings that are incorrect, those were intentional for your enjoynment. thanks , rex Hi. Here's some photos, stories and advice from our trip to the Philippines. It was really a humbly experienced going back to the Philippines. To have a church family there was the best part of our trip. And to see how solid the brotherhood of the barkadas in Happy Valley Homes1, it really showed, no matter how long or far you've been, it still the same walk, laughter, jokes and kindness to each other. Once again, I'm thankful for Kuya dann and Ate Rose for treating us like their own brother and sisters. My wife Aileen was very impress with their generosities and hospitalities. I will never forget our first trip to subic, the ... read more

Worth the Long Drive Left Manila at 10:30PM. Arrived Candelaria, Zambales at 4:30AM. 5 hours drive to the gateway of the virgin island of Potipot. It's well worth the long drive. Dawal Beach Resort is our jump off point to Potipot Island. The island's white sand, clear waters and overall serene atmoshere reminded me of what Boracay and Pagudpod used to be- unexploited. A few huts, though, are sponsored by a telecom company which gives a hint that this beautiful island will soon be commercialized. 10 Things I did on Labor Day 08: (1) Enjoyed the long drive from Manila to Candelaria, Zambales. (2) Slept for 4 hours at the resort. (3) Woke up to a loud sound of music. (4) Experienced Potipot Island. (5) Swam in the beach. (6) Lied down in the sand. (7) ... read more

My desire to visit the Philippines was based entirely on wanting to experience healings from psychic surgeons here. There are only a few places in the world where this kind of healer can be found and the Philippines is one of the most notorious. Usually the reaction I would get when I mentioned seeking a psychic healer (while there or in Indonesia) was skepticism/cynicism or amusement, as if to say these are all scams. But that didn't bother me. My response would always be "I have reliable information and referrals to the best ones". And this came from the church where I was trained in meditation and psychic healing myself ~ the Church of Divine (wo)Man in California. They have been making pilgrimages to psychic surgeons in the Philippines for 20 years. I had never gone ... read more

Man, if I lived here, I would be a little piglet in no time. The food here is so fatty, fried, and sugary. The major cause of death is diabetes and heart disease. And I look around and everyone is partaking in it. Depending on genetics, people seem to be really thin here...or not. But no one is obese like in the US. But I sure would be if I lived here. With the sun and the fatty food, I would soon become a crispy pata - fried up & fatty. We had a short lunch in the cafeteria. Even cafeteria food here is better than the Wilmington cafeteria. I had a fresh mango shake, two caramelized bananas, and pancit, which is glass noodled with fish cake and other random stuff. Filling. I had also had ... read more

I am still in the Philippines. Once again, my co-workers have given me a window on the country I would not have had otherwise. And that window is....the life of the upper-middle-class professional city-dwelling Filipino/a! I can't say I mind. It is extremely hot here, and it is nice to have a driver. It's very nice to sit in an air-conditioned coffee shop. Oh, lest I forget, these people love coffee as much as I do. Another thing that ties our two countries together. First, let me say I LOVE how out the gay people are here. Out and totally embracing who they are. It seems like people here are just who they are, no matter what that is. I wish more people were like that in the United States. I am obviously only getting a ... read more

I have spent a long time in the road in the Philippines. 3 hours a day, back and forth to the office. I have read so many Filipino billboards and signs that I am starting to learn Tagalog words and am even starting to get jokes that make reference to local advertising campaigns. There are only a few highways here, and the rest of the time you are driving through little villages, and farmland, and would-be suburbia. So, it can be slow.going, and yet it is pretty entertaining. The first 45 minute is highway driving out of Manila, and then it's small towns in Cavite, always crossing bridges across huge gaps with tiny rivers at the bottom. There is a constant scene going on outside. Little kids playing hide and go seek, girls walking home from ... read more

With Heather over to visit Sean, I was given the chance to explore another South East Asian country, recommended by a couple of people we had met, but seemingly not visited by many as part of the 'backpacking' circuit. Not only this, but it also gave me 18 days away from the moaning, worrying and general woman-like tendencies that make up Sean.... The Lonely Planet guide bought the day before my flight was the only information I had on the country so I boarded the plane with great expectation coupled with overwhelming mystery. Although the boarding of the plane didn't exactly go smoothly. After three times of asking, I genuinely insisted I had no liquids in my hand luggage. Soon after, I found myself in the Investigations Room, the contents of my bag shrew across the ... read more
