Well it's happened - got the dreaded Manila Belly - forgot to use bottled water when brushing my teeth. At least that's my first suspect - doubt it was anything I drank only drink Colt 45 and Iced Tea. Now I'm laid up in bed for the day - too frightened to venture too far from the dunny. The other day I mentioned where Arthur (Squish's brother lives) and his wife's reluctance to have us see and even greater reluctant to post pics of their lifestyle on this blogs. I still plan to honour that, but she has been kind enough to allow me to post pics of the walk from the road to their home. The day we visited it was wet all the way down despite being a dry day - well as dry ... read more

You know you're going to a good restaurant when there's a sign like this out the front and and armed guard to enforce the regulations In case you can't read it "Please deposit your firearms here" Side not to self - as nice as it can be at some places - if I ever have deep fried pork hocks again - it'll probably be too soon... read more

Another day of shopping for the girls so no pics as such. An interesting note on the security guards at the shopping mall; as you might expect the banks had their own security guards, but interestingly enough, SO DO THE COFFEE SHOPS. Perhaps a precaution against the caffeine uprising. Also had a massage yesterday - 1hrs foot massage and 1 hr full body massage for a little over $25. This include full use of all the other facilities (spa sauna etc). Even though this was fully legit, even here the people are looking for extended opportunities. Well it's yet ANOTHER day of shopping today after brekkie (joy oh joy). I think I'm getting a Barong Tagalog (traditional male formal shirt) for the re-wedding. Think I'll pass on brekkie today, simply find rice, deep fried chicken, roast ... read more

It took the bus four hours to get to San Antonio where we met our guide/boatman Kuya Mike. The last time we went to Pundaquit for camping, it only took us three hours by bus leaving at midnight – this time we missed the 04:00AM bus and had to wait until 05:00AM for the next one. Coming straight from work, I was groggy from having not slept and with the bus doing long stops, it wasn’t a very pleasant ride. It was a busy season seven months ago when we went camping at Anawangin so this time we were hoping that we’d have our ‘peace and quiet’ in another remote cove, Nagsasa. Unlike Anawangin which is just about 30 minutes boat ride from the Pundaquit beach, Nagsasa Cove is one and a half hours away. Though ... read more

Hello all, I will try to do this blog in my best English so forgive me for bad grammar :P The 28th of october my trip started, I left my home at 10 am and I flew away with Cathay Pacific for a long flight to Hong Kong. I must say this airline is realy great. Comfortable seats and very friendly crew. After a stopover I landed friday 29th october at 10 am in Manila, Corazon Aquino Airport. I went directly to the hotel my great friend Angie arranged for me. Angie called me and we agreed to meet in the evening so I could sleep for a while and she could finish her work:). In the evening I met Angie for the first time of my life and I must say she is realy great:). ... read more

My first cock fight was on TV. The national sport of the Philippines is an indigenous offering, more popular than three American contenders - basketball, baseball and volleyball. There is no more wonderful exposure of the double entendre in 'cock'. Eight men- muscles taught, drinking- spit and shout at the screen. In a spray of blood the fight is over. The winning cock, still flapping, is dragged off camera. In testosterone-fuelled celebration, the winning punters snatch their cash. Losers sit emasculated. My newbie's reaction to the fight was typical. Was that it? But it was so quick! The fight itself is nothing but a bloody stage where men battle over more important things - money, power, masculinity, sex - all in the context of 'cock'. My second fight was on a street corner. Again, it was ... read more

Right after work, me and two of my co-workers went straight to the bus station to catch the last coach scheduled for Iba Zambales (San Antonio), just to find out that it was all fully booked and that even the last bus for the alternative route had already left. We've planned for (my) Birthday/Camping trip months back so not proceeding with what was planned wasn’t an option. We decided to take our luck as chance passengers and got lucky, only that we had to stand for almost the entire three hours overnight trip to San Antonio. Our contact even seemed to have forgotten about us and made us wait for an hour at the side of the road. He finally came after lots of texts and bugging and also after getting a 'who are you?' reply ... read more

On my return to Manila with the Americans we had a nasty shock or two; quite literally - I was electrocuted in the shower which was very upsetting, feeling so vulnerable at the time... We were then told there were no beds at that guesthouse or any other in the few mile radius due to the Easter weekend, on top of that all transport was shut down and we would be stuck in the hole that is Manila for the weekend (The city is undoubtedly one of the worst I have ever seen; everything is cracked, broken, malodorous and dirty). Devastated, I tried to re-book my flight back to HK while Matt and Josh graciously searched for a bed for the night. During their absence I met Tom and Iselin, two Norwegians. Shortly after, Matt returned ... read more

The journey from Hanoi to Cebu, Philippines was a grueling one. We lost our wallet about two hours before having to get our flight which added an interesting and intense challenge to the day. The journey itself was overnight via three separate flights. It was a total hassle! We even had to bribe a Vietnamese passport official because we'd mislaid our health declaration booklets. It was a nasty way to finish things off in Vietnam. Cebu City was OK. The jeepneys were there en masse but it is mostly just roads. We spent quite a lot of time in the mall buying essentials before going to Apo. We also spent too much time in the video arcade honing our skills on Time Crisis 2 (the best of the series in my opinion) and we completed the ... read more
