These photos were taken on 24-26th of May 2006. We arrived in Bohol a few days after the storm/typhoon have passed. It's usually very sunny in the morning & it gets cloudy in the afternoon and then it rains at night. We went on a weekday so it wasn't packed, which is actually a good thing. On our last day, the resort was teeming with guests (huge families) checking in. Seems to be an ideal family getaway in Panglao Island. The resort has its own private beach with white sand, clear blue water & shells/corals along the shore. During low tide, you can walk hundreds of metres away from shore and the water will still be below your knees. There are hammocks on every coconut tree. The resort has two pools & jacuzzi. We arrived in Bohol via OceanJet ferry. Upon arrival our driver & tour guide came to meet us. Took us to our resort, The Bohol Beach Club, checked in, rested for 30 minutes before commencing our countryside tour. We were first taken to the Blood Compact Site then to Baclayon Church before heading to Loboc River for the buffet lunch river cruise. The food served were the traditional Filipino food - it was yummy. The cruise itself was very relaxing. There was a band playing as well and a mini dance floor where people dance to the music. After the cruise, we were taken to see the tarsiers - they are so adorable. I wish I could take one home but apparently they get suicidal when taken away from their natural habitat. In the afternoon, we ... read more

It is a naturally lighted cavern with a deep lagoon and many large stalactites and stalagmites. The cave is lit by sunlight which filters through holes in the ceiling. The underground lake is a popular swimming spot, but it has been known to test for high levels of various pollutants, since it is fed by ground runoff. Date: 6 May 2009 Venue: Loboc, Bohol, Philippines Activity: Post Workshop-Tour, MODEL 2009: Europe-Philippines International Workshop on Modelling, Simulation, and Grid Computing. Notes: A visit to Bohol is not complete without seeing the famous Philippine Tarsier. "The Philippine Tarsier (Tarsius syrichta), known locally as the Maumag in Cebuano/Visayan, is an endangered tarsier species endemic to the Philippines. It is found in the southeastern part of the archipelago, particularly in the islands of Bohol, Samar, Leyte, and Mindanao. Its name is derived from its elongated "tarsus" or ankle bone". ( Source: wikipedia.org ) Note: According to a colleague of mine, tarsiers should be viewed exclusively at the Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella, Bohol. This is the facility where tarsiers are properly treated and given enough space to roam. From the photo collection of Raffy... read more

On May 10, 2009 (Sunday) I joined a group of colleagues (Panda Grid Workshop participants) on a boat trip to Pamilacan Island in Bohol, Philippines. From Flushing Meadows Resort (were we stayed) in Panglao Island, Bohol, the boat took us to Pamilacan Island (around 40 minutes, one way). Some of us went scuba diving and the others went snorkeling. The weather was very sunny (we were lucky because in Manila and Luzon there were heavy rains on that day). Pamilacan is a very small island. In the island I was able to take photos of fish being dried on the beach. (Note: I will have a separate entry on our scuba diving and snorkeling experience in Pamilacan Island). Travelling Bohol by Motorbikes Today we mustered up some courage and rented motorcycles. We ended up bartering down to 400 pesos for 8 hours of use. Our plan was to get a map and drive to the Chocolate Hills. They Hills were about 70km's away from where we were staying in Alona Beach and we figured renting the motorcycles would be the quickest and cheapest, albeir more dangerous way to see them. The other option was to take a tour from a guided group (approx. 2500 - 3000 pesos) or to hire a tricycle for around 1200pesos. The day before we took the bikes out for an hour to see how they would handle and what we thought. After about 45 minutes we felt pretty comfortable so this was a huge deciding factor. We woke at ... read more

Cebu City Well we caught a flight from Hong Kong to Cebu City, Philippines and arrived safely. We landed in the Philippines on April 28th and was granted a 21 day visa upon entry. Once we landed at midnight we jumped in a cab and headed straight to our hostel or pension house as they call them here. Now I thought mexico was a ghetto, it's got nothing on Cebu City!! We arrived at our hostel and was greeted by 2 friendly armed guards that stand out front of the hostel. During the day there is 1 armed guard and this isn't just because it's a hostel, but every shop there has one and even the banks have 3 armed guards all with 12 gauge shotguns and pistols with belts of bullets. It was quite shocking ... read more
