Hey everyone the other night i had to interview a GP, just asking about his role, the general health nepali ppl, etc, and he aslo happened to be a plastic surgeon, working in the burns unit of Nepals biggest and oldest hospital, completing plastic reconstructive surgery on burns patients. he was very egar to show the group around his hospital and ward, which i am heaps excited about. he doesnt have any allied health professionals on staff, so when a patient arrives, they get treated, if their bad enough they get surgery and then they are left to heal. if they get contractures on anything its like oh well the patients dont recieve any compression bandgaging to help with the scars, or any limb movement and training to maintain any range of motion in their joints, ... read more

Namaste! Back in Fishling, enjoying the nepalie village life, away from noisy, dirty Kathmandu. I needed to be out, sometimes it is too much! Even Kathmandu is a very inspiring place, with great people, but there is a lot going on that can be give you a ‘too emotional day’!! And yesterday was one of those days … even it was just a day like the other ones, sometimes you think you got used to everything, and the next moment you don’t know how to handle everything anymore! Our friends from the US (Ashley and Cody) left on Monday morning, too soon to have seen everything, but what to do … it is always too soon! Nepal is a very magical country, with a nature and people who inspire you so much! When you think you ... read more

Well, this is a blog I never expected to be writing.......believe it or not, we are on our way home (four months into our 10 month trip). I have had some unexpected issues to deal with in Vancouver which has meant I need to come home for a couple/three weeks. I am still in shock but I am adjusting towards being really excited to see everyone!!!!! I am sad because it has meant the cancellation of our 11 day trek, a trek that was only hours away from beginning - as a matter of fact, if I had not gotten food poisoning, I would have been deep in the Himalyas...... a huge dream of mine. However, my cats would have been history. I have faith that I will make it back to the Himalayas. For now ... read more

Hey folks- Just a quick bulliten to let you know what's going on. I survived some wicked stomach something or other, got my visa despite the rain, and Jason and I are headed back into India tonight. We should arrive in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, tomorrow evening. We'll meet some of our former students from Myanmar and Korea, hang out for a few days, and get on a 1.5 day train directly to Goa (hopefully- we have only heard second hand of this train's existence...) in time for Christmas/Birthday/New Year celebrations. More on this on the move. Photos as we pass through. Holiday wishes closer to those dates. Love, Sara & Jason... read more

I am in a terrible position. The girl who was looking after my cats is now taking them to the spca. I have to fly home if I cannot find a home in the next two days (the next available flight). If anyone could possibly take them, please let me know asap, or if you know anyone. I know this is a longshot, but is my last resort before flying home - they are all I have left from the fire. With sadness, Heide... read more

My fellow friends, countryman, travellers and avid readers welcome to the next chapter in Nepal. Firstly thank you for your kind words regarding the Annapurna Circuit I'm glad you enjoyed reading about it as much as I did treking it. So lets get straight into the next little adventure which includes a real mixture of humour, adventure, hardship and unfortunately real tragedy. A reminder that no matter how beautiful the Himalayas are nature can turn to conspire against us and turn painfully for the worse with dire consequences. That's all in good time so lets begin the trip. Firstly Everest is known to the Nepalis as Sagarmatha "Goddess of the Sky " and to the Sherpas as Chomolungma "The Mother Godess" and Miyolangsangma, the Goddess, one of five long life sisters who reside on the peaks ... read more

hey guys well im back in thamel this weekend booking my flight to phokara, its costing us $108.16 US. which isnt too bad, its 20 dollars cheaper than anything else we could get so im happy. other than that we are staying at Bouda, a buddist stupa. its really amazing.its really calm and peacfull there. we have found a little cafe where the westerners hang out. its good to find these places because thats where you can eat meat. last night i had grilled chicked with mango salsa, potatos, beans, carrots and salad. it was soo good. i ate everything. As you can tell i get really excited about what i eat when it doesnt involve rice and soup. but this stupa is huge. it about 20m in diameter and its like 3 storeys tall. its ... read more

Nothing seems strange here, it all feels familiar. It feels so natural being in Nepal. Not like Africa where I felt like a foreigner, here I just feel at home. I was so happy as I flew over Nepal and saw the Himalaya's for the very first time. I could sense that I was going to absolutely love this place, and I was right. The mountains were so majestic and beautiful and I just looked down from the plane window and wondered what it all held for me. Arriving here has been a long time coming, I have wanted to get to Nepal for so long. I have always been so fascinated by it. I remember being fascinated with the name "Kathmandu" since I was a small girl. It had not only been a long ... read more
