Tuesday 7th October - Ghorepani (2875m ) to Poon Hill (3200m ) back via Mid Ghorepani (2800m) to Deurali Pass (3090m) to Tadopani (2630m) In summary - altitude gain of 335m, descent of 400m, ascent 290m, descent 460m - all in one day!!! What a day! Up at 4.30am to make the pre sunrise trek to Poon Hill - 3200m with an amazing sunrise view over the Annapurnas - Annapurna South, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Hinchuli - the top peak being 8000m (Kosciusko is 2200m). Luckily we woke to clear skies; otherwise it wouldn't have been worth the trek. Trudging up the steps in the dark, head torches lighting the way, we marched up more relentless steps, slowly like a line of ants - with the mass of other trekkers making the same early morning journe... read more

Geo: 27.6154, 85.611The Last ResortThis was on the trip itinerary before Tibet got cancelled, as it is on the way to the border. But now it was on our itinerary for our two week break! The largest canyon swing in the world…. Hell yes! Their office is in Thamel, not far away from our usual haunt of the Northfield café. We discussed the possibility of going on the car journey back from Chitwan …. (We had our own personal driver, as he was coming to pick up another client from the city…. Lifestyle of the rich and famous for a few hours at least!) and decided to go and chat to them about our options. Due to it being off season, transport was not as regular as it could have been, but that gave us the ... read more

Geo: 27.6154, 85.611We leave the relative safety of Bhairawa and set out for Kathmandu Bike shopping. Neither of us was much keen on a seven hour bus ride but theoretically it was going to be for a good cause so we sucked it up. Well that was for the first ten hours anyway then the trip was wearing a bit thin. Kathmandu turned out to be a bit of a generalisation as the Bike was actually located about three hours the other side of Kathmandu in a little visited village on the way to the Tibetan border. We had some sketchy directions and full of confidence headed off. Today being the second day of the Depawali festival (one of the crasier in Nepal) we had the added pressure of many people on the public buses who take ... read more

25 December 2009 Kathmandu reveals itself well before you arrive. The clouds, undefined, morph suddenly into the frozen peaks of the Himalaya. The humbling effect of mountains will remain unchanged for me. The significant pleasure of feeling small. After a long time between Nepali visits, I'm curious to feel the familiar and observe the change. See what a country I feel is akin to an old friend may feel like with fresh eyes. The pollution, along with the population, is catapulting towards oblivion along with the rest of the world. But the eau de farm animal blended potently with burning plastic, wraps sharply around my nostrils like an old romance. Happily greeted by motorbike, Andres whisked me through the throng to Thamel - tourist enclave and the logical place to start. Not a whisper of anything ... read more

Four Seasons in One Day! We awake to face the prospect of a seven-hour, 1,800 metre ascent today. Nice! The first hour is relentless and steep and it's hot to boot. I don't rate our chances of completing the day if we face more of the same for the next six hours! Fortunately, I find 'the zone' and we reach our stop for lunch on schedule after 3.5 hours. The vegetable momo (a popular snack of steamed dumplings akin to plump ravioli) are the best we've tasted so far. Still no apple pie though. This is supposed to be the apple pie trail! Babu promises us apple pie this evening. We head off again - a further 3 hours of trekking ahead of us (well that was the plan anyway!) One hour in and the ... read more

My body's hit the wall today. A hard bed has provided little relief from the aching muscles in my legs and shoulders. After a hearty breakfast (try muesli with hot milk folks) we set off. My head was in the clouds but on we must go. Much of the day's route has been along the banks of the Gandaki river and has felt rather like walking through a quarry, our footing uncertain on the gravel as we unnervingly pass the locals hammering away at the rocks above us. We make good speed and stop for lunch: pumpkin soup, chapati and vegetable momo (tasty boiled dumplings). Such a fine feed keeps us fueled for the rest of the day as we complete our 1,000 metre descent to Tatopani where we jump in the hot spring for ... read more

In Marpa and then again in Tatopani we bumped into the nice French group who were more talkative than the Basque people and also a few Germans also nice. Seperatists are just a bit touchy I guess... The food at this part of the Annapurna circuit is amazing - especially the deserts - sometimes I've been having 3 after my meal. It's all the trekking! Hot springs and and an American from Marin were very nice in Tatopani. Jules and I decided to stay a rest day and Tim decided to push on to do the Sanctuary trek on the end. In the morning after Tim had left Jules and I decided to head on anyway for differing reasons. I think Jules wanted to catch up with Tim and do the Sanctuary and I needed to ... read more
