Finally the day had arrived and we were off to Kathmandu!! The only bad thing about going was the fact that we had to fly out from Doha airport! The worlds worst airport its official!! The airport was its usual pushing and bustling self with the familiar fragrance of Doha, and the million and one people who seemed to take there life belongings on the plane with them packed into as many cardboard boxes as they could find. Finally we got through to the departure lounge and sat in our usual coffee place for a small bite to eat, and so that we could people watch! There’s nothing more fascinating than an airport I find, the people there are from all over the world and all walks of life! Especially in Doha the airport is ... read more

After all that time in the mountains, the big city of Kathmandu seemed like New York. The streets were crowded and bustling, it was noisy, and it was hot with the sticky monsoon weather. The usual shady Nepalis were out in Durbar Square, and the “peanut gallery” was stationed at their everyday spot in Sundhara. It felt great to be “home” in good ol’ Kathmandu again. One of the best parts about returning to Kathmandu was eating fruit and Indian food again. Our eyes nearly popped out of our heads as we saw the variety of fruits and vegetables available in the markets: green beans, carrots, peppers, cauliflower, tomatoes, bananas, melons, oranges, papayas…and I finally got some of that tandoori chicken that I dreamed about! Mandarins are no longer in season, but mango season is in ... read more

This is now my number one favourite Asia saying, spouted by any tradesman/vendor who thinks he can pass off any old rubbish as the stuff you are looking for....the 'but different' clause is often added by myself when it becomes obvious the black-and-2-sizes-larger equivalent of the red top one's looking for isn't quite the same. Nevertheless, the sellers look truly confused and affronted when you don't want the totally inappropriate product they are touting, as if you are mad for not wanting to wear a tent in the wrong colour!!!'Good price, good price', they mutter. 'I no want- it not right', I mutter' . 'Ok - I give you discount...how much you want pay?',...is the normal response. 'No, no, I really no want', I struggle, staring defeat in the face. 'But madam, I give you very ... read more

These are a few of our favourite things about Nepal: (In no particular order) 1) Elephants!! Especially the cute baby ones at Chitwan 2) Indian Food - curries, naan, chapati, indian sweets and masala tea... it's all great but all the overlanders from India say it will only get better! 3) Cake - the bakeries of Kathmandu pull of pseudo-German quite well and all have discounts after 8pm. Then there's Snowman down in Kathmandu who always has cheap, delicious chocolate cake 4) Mountains - from the tree covered kind to the high Himalayas, they are all really beautiful and we can't get enough. Looking forward to the day we return in order to walk the Annapurna circuit 5) The scent of India - incense, spices, curries a-cooking (and a little of the unsavory stuff you get ... read more

My Tibet-induced good karma and Buddhist concepts of respecting all life forms now come with certain exclusions: mosquitoes and Japanese tourists. I'm not sure how many places a mossie can hide in a hotel room but mine is certainly playing a great game of hide during the day and seek during the middle of the night. The pre-bed ritual involves a hop/scour round for the afore-mentioned beast, and every day I come to the conclusion that he/she has finally popped her clogs and I will sleep in peace. Not a chance. At 2 am sharp every day I awake to a buzzing in my ear, pull the covers over, realise I am suffocating, then switch the light on to see it disappearing out of reach. Light goes out and buzzing re-occurs. Like a game really but amusement ... read more

I feel like I am in some mad time warp. The days are now descending into repetitive monotony. Like some scene out of Groundhog day. Even the same darned mosquito divebombed me 2 consecutive nights at the same time; My response was of course the same both times....being unable to chase it round the room I could do little except smear mossie repellant in my hair ( which smells delightful!) and dive under the covers, with just my nose poking out to allow ventilation!! The morning trip to the bathroom is meticulously planned and I wobble in the shower on one leg. I then hop down to the laundry 3 doors down the corridor to pick up clothes, being questioned by the same staff every day if my leg is better; I always reply the same ... read more

Well there I was in the communications centre scanning www.everestnews.com and eating rumballs (my new passion!), while discussing the state and prognosis of my leg for around the 50th time today when the guy next to me turned and said, "I was on the summit 5 days ago". I nearly fell off my chair ( for the second time this trip), as I expected any mere mortal who had performed this feat to at least be lying down being massaged , probably with various extremities missing and still attached to an oxygen bottle for effect! I studied him and yes, he did look a little weather beaten, with a few cuts on cracked skin on his face, and he smelled like he hadn't showered for about 3 months, but apart from that no tell-tale signs and ... read more

Life is pretty challenging here on one leg. I spend most of my days resembling a cross between a kangaroo on speed and an unstable flamingo. My new best friend is an old guy with a prosthetic leg and finger stumps at knuckle level who sees me as some sort of disabled ally and keeps giving me the thumbs up, or rather I should say the stumps up. By the way, I'm only his friend because I can no longer travel faster then him to escape him ; in fact, I'm a walking ( or non-walking!) disaster on crutches!!! My prophesy about the flip-flops ( see earlier diary) came true: two days ago I found my flight out from Kathmandu had been cancelled by the airline, which is about to go bankrupt . I rushed to ... read more
