It has been Christoff's dream to go to Nepal. When it was his time to choose a destination, he wasn't going to let Nepal pass by... Sunday, 4/16/2006 We arrived in Kathmandu safely. We were supposed to be picked up by hotel and were surprised when we found out that we were sharing a small bus with locals. Our suitcases were put on top of the bus, which was an exiciting surprise. Because we woke up so early in Delhi, at 6AM, we were too tired to do anything exciting upon our arrival, we just had early dinner at a local restaurant and called it a day. Monday, 4/17/2006 We weren't sure whether it was time difference or high altitude (we were blaming everything on high altitude) we woke up early (again), 7AM. We were off ... read more

"We advise against all but essential travel to Nepal during the current period of enhanced tension, as there is a risk of being caught up in the violence on the streets. Those British Nationals already in Nepal should decide whether their presence is essential." . Well that's just typical isn't it. Just as I fly in. Welcome, as they say, to the magical country of Nepal. Is my presence essential? Depends on my current ego, but I think not. Nevertheless, I have been looking forward to visiting this country more than any other on my trip, and a little bit of violence adds to the pub stories. Ok, bad joke. Let me tell you how it's been for me so far. Generally, the situation in Nepal has reached the international community's attention for a couple of ... read more

Hello! We just made it to the safe confrines of Thamel in kathmandu. We logged on expecting lots of messages of concern about whether we were OK given the situation here, but no one sent any, not even my dad!... maybe it hasn't been reported on the UK news, but there were a lot of protests here and quite a few Nepalis have ben shot. We didn't know because we hadn't had any TV or e-mail for a week in Tibet. Our guide sent us over the border and when we got to Kodari, we discovred there was a curfew and all the roads were blocked. There was no transport at all. We banded together with about 15 other travellers and got a "tourist bus" to take us through the road blocks. The Americans and Canadians ... read more

Hello Mums and everyone else, apologies for the delay in updates but we have just returned from a two week trek to Mount Everest base camp in Nepal, which by the way was fantastic, however as we've just found a reasonable internet café I'm going to try and catch up as much as possible and get the blog organized, especially as I just found an unsent blog I forgot to send from Australia so I hope you're all sitting comfy as I there should be a few stories to follow… Enjoy...... read more

Kathmandu is definitely a kind of sensory overload. I imagine the experience will be repeated in most of the overcrowded, underorganized cities of South Asia, but this is where I will have to become accustomed to it. Chayna (pronounced like the country that produced Mao Zedong), the title of this entry, is the Nepali word for "no" and has myriad applications. For the past two days, Eddie and I have toured the city with Michelle, Eddie's girlfriend who has been here for two weeks, and a local guide assigned to help us out by Michelle's Nepali friend. Although the guides are sometimes helpful to haggle or translate, overall, I think I prefer to muddle through on my own, as I don't like to feel as if I require assistance. Plus, I know how to say "no". ... read more

Well, I made it. This is going to be brief, as it is getting a bit late here, but I wanted to let everybody know that I made it here in one piece. Believe it or not, the three flights I took to get here were very bearable. I stayed up all night packing, so I had no problem sleeping on the first leg. The Heathrow to Abu Dhabi flight was completely abandoned, so I had a bed consisting of the four middle seats. I took off from Newark, and flew right past a toy-model Manhattan. It seemed to say "do you really think you will be able to say goodbye to this?" On the approach to Kathmandu, I caught my first glimpse of the fabled High Himalayas, though I think Everest remained coyly out of ... read more

Varanasi to Kathmandu Well its catch up time again if I can remember the last time I wrote we were heading towards Kathmandu, Nepal. The first step of the trip was to catch a train from Varanasi to Gorakhpur, once again the train ride was pretty much as before but this time we didn’t have to get a sleeper as the train journey was a mere 6 hours - oh joy… So we arrive at Gorakhpur to spend the night and to say “culture shock” would be an understatement. We had previously met another couple heading towards Kathmandu at the train station who had made the journey before so we followed in their footprints to try and find a hotel that was at least stay-able for one night - trust me this was going to be ... read more

Back to the bucket bath for my first few days in Kathmandu, staying with friends in Swayambunath. It is shocking how little Kathmandu has changed. The dusty streets seemed dustier after five years and the smog thicker. But no signs of progress or care for the city and its people from the king. A sad state of affairs. Yet there are a host of creature comforts for those who can afford it. After the fall in relative isolation in Xining, I indulge with friends in shopping for pashmina shawls, visiting the foot massage ladies, and seeking out the requisite pizza fix at Fire and Ice. All this reached a feverish pitch on a strange New Year's Eve of squirming through throngs of Nepali men in Thamel, trying to find a good bar. After that, I moved ... read more
