Today began with an early start, as we had an all day bus ride to Kathmandu. We stopped in a small town, ate our yummy lunchboxes supplied by the hotel in Chitwan & arrived in Kathmandu around four. After checking into the Hotel Harati Sam, Deb & I went on a mission to find Cosmic Air & sort out Sam's Kathmandu to Delhi flight, scheduled for three weeks time. I'd found out roughly where the office was located, but became worried when the United Airlines staff I asked directions from told me Cosmic Air had closed down. We found the office & unfortunately Cosmic Air was in fact closing down & today was their last day of business; so Sam currently has no way out of Kathmandu! Decided not to panic just yet; we'll check the ... read more

Namaste All Because of being too late booking the flight, we HAD to fly business class, so it was a short but very enjoyable & comfortable flight, we arrived in Kathmandu and were greeted by Bhanu, our Nepalese contact and trek organiser. He took us to our hotel, the Tibet Guest House, (very nice) where he introduced our guide for this trek, his Uncle Om. Over chai final details of our trek were worked out and the flight from Pokhara to Jomson paid for. Bhanu checked our gear which all fitted in 1 rucksack for our porter Naryan to carry. All the trekking business out of the way, next morning we spent with Bhanu sightseeing around Kathmandu. We visited 3 temples, so if Arnie wasn't templed out before he certainly was now!!! The first was a ... read more

Hey everybody.. Hope everyone has had a great summer.. Before i head back to the real world in a few days (after buying some last minute trinkets in Kathmandu and Bangkok on my way home), i just wanted to share my last blog with all of you. This summer has been truly amazing.. and was perfectly topped off by my time here in Nepal and Tibet. As you can see from the pictures, Kathmandu, Lhasa, Gyantse, and Shigatse, were all amazing places.. but.. there really isn't much that can compare to my experience sleeping at Everest Base Camp. Even staying at EBC which is at a height of 5,200 meters, the Peaks of Everest towered, and although I got quite sick at night from the high altitude, the sight of the North Face was truly truly ... read more

Got a bus to our rendevous point to meet our instructor and boat. Wasn't too impressed when we saw the boat, it was patched up with 20 odd patches all with old flaking glue over it. they attepted to blow up the boat and it deflated imediately. So we called for the backup, which was even older but didn't deflate as quickely, which was a good sign. We brought the pump with us so we could pump it up every hour and off we went. Rafting for a day in Nepal was awesome, the river was high because of the monsoon rain so the current was much harder and difficult, but with the combination of two English fellos, three Chinese, three Koreans and our Nepalese instructor we powered through and came out alive and well. Darjeeling was nice but rainy and the supposedly amazing views Mount Everest and some other incredibly large mountain were covered by clouds. Anyway we watched our first Hindi Film called 'Corprate', got the jist of it but it was in hindi. Next stop Nepal!!! Arrived at the border hoping to change money, there were three banks but no one accepted dollars, sterling or even my Sterling and US dollar travellors cheques for some reason, they said come back tommorrow, what difference does that make I said, they gave me the same answer. Well the bus ride was 1000 rupees each and we only had 265 rupees and it was about to leave in 15 minutes. With a bit of hard negotiation work and a lot of running around I managed to pay one tour opporater with ... read more

Well following the wittering on to anyone who would listen for the past 4 months or so, have made it to Kathmandu! Following instructions from Graham that he was taking me out to have my final meal I felt like I was being sent to the slaughter not on my way to a journey of self discovery! It was very yum and much appreciated as those people on Qatar Air don't really have your best intrests at heart whilst you are their paying guest......let's just say that if KLM is one extreme (feeding you as soon as one mouthfull has gone.....though I do recall a gap at one point) Qatar Air feel that you have to practically beg for food..... Mind you it was probably for the best that the rest of the rabble as otherwise ... read more

This is now my number one favourite Asia saying, spouted by any tradesman/vendor who thinks he can pass off any old rubbish as the stuff you are looking for....the 'but different' clause is often added by myself when it becomes obvious the black-and-2-sizes-larger equivalent of the red top one's looking for isn't quite the same. Nevertheless, the sellers look truly confused and affronted when you don't want the totally inappropriate product they are touting, as if you are mad for not wanting to wear a tent in the wrong colour!!!'Good price, good price', they mutter. 'I no want- it not right', I mutter' . 'Ok - I give you discount...how much you want pay?',...is the normal response. 'No, no, I really no want', I struggle, staring defeat in the face. 'But madam, I give you very ... read more
