Our journey overland from Wivenhoe has got us to Nepal so far. We have been here for six weeks now and much of our time has been spent off the road in one way or another - a fantastic antedote to all the time spent on the road since September! Our first stop was Pokhara - we both finally sucummed to the inevitable phenomenom of Asia - the travellers squits (I'll skip the details but we're both OK now!) This forced us to stay off the road for a while but gave us the perfect excuse to while away many days by the beautiful Phewa Tal lake in various cafes playing endless games of scrabble, drinking tea, reading and recuperating! Once I felt better I was able to attend a daily yoga class - it seems ... read more

The flight to Kathmandu was really good only about an hour and a half. We got ourselves a taxi and headed off to our hotel. It seems common place that when you get a taxi you also seem to get a guide trying to sell you the tours but much to the guys annoyance Tim had pre-arranged everything!!! The drive was easy and apart from the driver neally taking out a whole line of motorbikes trying to get us up a tight alley way to our hotel all was good. We were greeted by the owner and treated to some Neaplese tea which was made with ginger, cinnamon and alot of sugar. Very nice. Our room over looked the gardens and had hot water and a large double bed with pristine white sheets. We both felt ... read more

Kathmandu 9.dec Hab mich hier wieder gut eingelebt in diesem Chaos. Mal sehen was sich verwirklichen laesst. Namaste Die Sylvia Kathmandu 6.dec Bin ... read more

kim here We've been in nepal 5 days now and have seen and heard and smelt so many brand new sensations! We arrived at 2am into darkness, so when we woke up our first morning we were finally able to see nepal. Most of our pictures are buildings, temples and sights around kathmandu, i am not sure if they will do the justice our eyes were able to see. The highlights so far are the amazing stupas and durbar square, which is an ancient square full of buddist and hindu temples, pagoda style, and where all the hippies used to hang out during the 70's. There is a house in the middle where a 10 yr old girl lives , her title is kumari, which is basically a princess, she will be a kumari until her ... read more

Argh, all that rushing out the door first thing in the morning to get to the airport, only to sit around and wait. And wait. And wait. Waiting for the flight to board took longer then the flight itself! I was bummed that, for the first time on my journey, I didn't have the window seat. Because, as we cruised at 35,000 feet, I glanced out the window and saw a mountain, my first Himalaya, which looked like it was at the same level as our plane! I had to strain around the dumb people sitting next to me, who barely glanced out the window right next to them, even though they had, like me, traveled all the way from the U.S. on their first trip to Nepal. Once in Kathmandu, getting through the airport was ... read more

Two months ago (ok so I'm not the best at keeping this blog up-to-date), the DUCK 'Everest' Expedition (that's Durham University Charities Kommittee for the non-Durham amongst you), touched down at Trivandrum International Airport, Kathmandu, Nepal. For the majority of our group this was a 5-week break in-between years at Uni. For me it was my long over-due return to Nepal and the start of a 6-month, errrr, holiday, before I settle down and get a real job. Or not. On leaving the airport, sensory memories of my previous visit came flooding back. First the sensation of being able to feel the heat - so close. Then the smell. The Kathmandu smell: Petrol fumes, spices, incense, and general shit heated to 30 degrees centigrade and left to fester for a fortnight. And finally the noise of ... read more

NEW TRIP 07 We got here in the evening - the first thing that hits you is the music - it seems to be blasting from every bar and and roof-top restaurant and all of it competing for attention - somehow the effect is brilliant, it's just a really lively, jumping place! I love all of it - the people, food, even the hotel - thanks Nadja! - and it's a great place to spend a few days before hopping over to the mad hassle of India in a few days' time...Even with all the music - and the sound of a melancholy trad / fusion Nepali song is filling up the street - it's the most laid-back place imaginable...spent a few calm hours in the hotel garden this morning (6th) just reading and watching the ... read more

We’re in Nepal! After a long and Thai airways flight, where they tried to make up for all the drawback of long haul flights with copious quantities of food (all good for me), we got to Thailand. We dodged the usual tourist traps lying in wait out of customs and got a registered taxi. The ‘five minutes from the airport’ quoted on the hotel website turned into about 20, with the taxi driver taking a very roundabout route. Simon (mate of mine from Welli), the only one with Baht, stepped up to pay the 73 BS fair ($3 NZ). The taxi driver predictably said there was a 50 BS surcharge. After some argument Si ended up bay 90. Unfortunately he realised later that he’d paid him $90US, not $90 BS. One very happy Taxi driver. ... read more
