Well we made it to Chitwan - but arrived a day later than intended. We woke up at a lovely 5am on June 1st, packed, checked out, and hauled ourselves to the bus stop only to find out that the buses were all on strike. Great. Back to the guesthouse, back to bed until the restaurants opened and we could have breakfast. After cruising the town a bit, it came to our attention that not only were the buses not running, but 90% of the stores were closed. Holiday? Nope. We asked around - turns out that it was a caste strike and that one of the lower castes collectively decided to take the day off. We ended up spending the day reading and playing cards in our hotel garden. The next day, we went ... read more

8th May and Cathy and I were up at 5.30am to say our goodbyes to everyone then we were off for a very long boring 6hr bus trip to Chitwin National Park. We were signed up with the Rainbow Safari Lodge situated just outside of the park. In the evening we were taken on a tour of the village and learnt how these people must live with dangerous animals and malaria mozzies. These houses were made from cow dung and elephant grass. Visited the elephant camp and went on a quick bush walk around the town coming out at the rivers edge to drink cold coke watching the sunset. Another early start the next day for an 1hr caone ride up the river, unfortunetly not finding any crocs. Next was a 2hr jungle walk which was ... read more

On Friday I travelled, with the rest of the group of volunteers, from Kathmandu to Chitwan. I can't say I was feeling 100%, as we all went out in Thamel again the previous evening - hangovers seem to last forever at this altitude. Mid journey we stopped to go white water rafting, which definitely lived up to expectations - at one point we went for a swim/drift down river amongst the gorges, suspension bridges, many hills and generally stunning scenerery. Yesterday was also a lot of fun. Rode elephants in the jungle, went for 'elephant bath' and visited an elephant breeding centre. The highlight was the elephant bath - involved climbing onto the elephant (up the trunk on a couple of occasions), getting sprayed a bit, then the elephant tipping everyone off. Repeated many times. ... read more

One of the things I most looked forward to on my trip to Nepal was the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ride atop an elephant to see wildlife at Chitwan Wildlife National Park. The park and our accomodations at a place called Safari Narayani -- clean and spartan rooms in bungalows with no phones or televisions -- reminds me of the camp in northern Florida I went to as a child. Each room opens on to a small patio with chairs, and beyond that to a large swimming pool. I thought about taking a dip, but after a couple of other people went swimming and reported that the water was slimy, I decided not to take the plunge. We ate a simple buffet dinner on the porch of a lodge overlooking the Rapti River. Surprisingly, the air ... read more

In addition to riding elephants at Chitwan National Wildlife Park in Nepal, several of us took took a dugout canoe ride along the Rapti River. The large dugout canoes were powered by two very strong men with poles, Nepal's version of Venetian gondoliers. While coasting down the river, we saw smoke wafting up from a nearby river bank and a few men squatting near the fire. Our Chitwan guide told us that someone was being cremated. One of the men by the fire saw us coming and got up and shouted, "No pictures." Our guide, after asking a local woman nearby who was being cremated, explained to us that a 35-year-old woman from the village had died. He also said that ashes put in the Rapti River in Nepal eventually end up in the Ganges ... read more

In addition to looking at wildlife, we got to do a little anthropological study near Chitwan National Wildlife Park. One small Tharu village near Chitwan lets tourists come visit in hopes that they will buy something or contribute to their children's education fund. Our visit to this Tharu village in early April was my first visit to an agricultural village in the Third World. The Tharus make their living by subsistence agriculture, growing wheat, corn, rice, cabbage and other crops. All around Chitwan we saw colorfully dressed women planting rice, men using water buffalo to plow the fields, women carrying thatch from the forest in gigantic baskets on their backs, and children fishing or swimming in the river. Within the little village, we saw tidy homes constructed of mud with open doorways and thatched roofs. ... read more

We stood huddled on the edge of the jungle while our guide delivered the safety message detailing how to save ourselves in the event of meeting a rhino, tiger or sloth bear. For the rhino we were directed to (1) look for a small tree to scramble up, or in the absence of a small tree (2) to look for a large tree to hide behind, or in absence of any trees whatsoever to (3) run in a zig zag fashion as fast as possible away from the approaching rhino! Because of their weight rhinos find it difficult to change directions quickly, so while you may look ridiculous running through the jungle in a zig zag pattern the rhino will have less chance of catching you! If we encountered a tiger we were encouraged to stay ... read more

Chitwan National Park... Ok so its a very delayed entry and it seems like a lifetime has passed by, but there are just some things that will not be forgotten. A big thumbs up to this short experience and well recommended if you have the extra cash! Our trip wouldn’t have been the same if not for Shuman our guide and bit of savior in regards of seeing the best this place has to offer in 4 days. It all started once off the bus and rode to nearby Sauraha in the open jeep back with the wind in our hair. The countryside is brightly tropical and as spring was approaching, the wild flowers and wild bung grew along side the dirt track. Found a great room at the Rainforest resort just a 7 minute stroll ... read more
