While waiting around in Kathmandu for the Indian visa to come through we had a few days to kill so headed for a 5 day trip to Chitwan. We wanted to see tigers and wild elephants but we were there at the wrong time (best time is February - March when elephant grasses have been burned and you can see animals!). We also managed a couple of days white-water rafting on the Tresuli river which was great fun. We didn't see the big animals but saw the rare one-horned rhino, deer, wild boar, gharial and magar crocodiles and loads of types of bird.... read more

Leaving Pokhara, we headed to a fabulous traditional restored Newari hotel in a little village called Bandipur - it seemed like an oasis of 5* luxury! We all had a lovely tour around the village and local school and then in the evening we had a massive meal on the hotel's balconywith a view towards the himilayas. Sadly for me, supper bounced and I spent the rest of the night with a sick bucket! Everyone else got up at 6.00am to take sunrise photos and Margret took my camera so I'm able to show you the view! Unfortunatley for me that morning, we then had a 6 hour journey to Chitwan National Park in Southern Nepal and I spent most of the journey either hidding under the rug or with my head over the side of ... read more

After a bumpy five hour bus ride from Kathmandu we arrived to the village of Sauraha in Chitwan national park. Chitwan was conveniently on our way towards Indian border. When we got off the bus everybody seemed to have someone from a hotel waiting for them, except for us and a dutch couple. After five minutes everybody else had disappeared so there were only the four of us surrounded by a number of drivers offering us a lift and cheap hotels deals. We ended up in the Riverside Hotel (www.hriverside.com) together with the dutch couple, Cees-Jan and Elsa. This turned out to be a very good choice, the hotel is situated in a beautiful location on the river bank and is cheap, clean and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Way more than what we ... read more

Okay...so now I am in Jaiupr, India and have finally uploaded my photos. So, here is my update from Chitwan National Park in Nepal: We made it to Chitwan National Park which I can only imagine is very similar to the African Safari land. It is very flat with a river which surrounds the park. In the park are elephants, rhinos and tigers as well as lots of birds and wildlife. We found a great place to stay (and as I keep getting many emails from people looking to travel and asking for recommendations, I will now on list the places I stay and eat at) in the Riverside Guest house. The place is right on the river (duh) and has a very friendly staff. We ate most of our meals at lovely outdoor restaurant named ... read more

It was not easy to leave India, not because we did not want to but because several obstacles were put in our way. Our plan was to reach the Chitwan National Park (Nepal) in one day, but as you can imagine it did not work out. Somehow we got the impression that national parks - be it in India or Nepal - must be hard to reach to give them an air of exclusivity. Theoretically Varanasi is a perfect starting point for Nepal, but due to the political problems tourist numbers are dwindling and it was difficult to find transport other than local. Our train to Gorakhpur was due to leave shortly before midnight, we would arrive around 8 a.m., then take a bus to the Nepalese border and from the Nepalese town of Sunauli somehow ... read more

Day two in Chitwan and today promised crocodiles and baby elephants. The day started early with a morning canoe down a river apparently full of crocs. Thankfully most of them were still sleeping, so there was no chance of us getting eaten while paddling down the river. Our guide was a bit too bold and decided to take us a bit too close to the crocodile holes - holes dug into the bank of the river in which the crocs slept. We actually got within a meter of full sized sleeping crocs. We could see their heads and noses sticking out of the water. It was a bit nerve wrecking because at one point the snout of the croc was pointing right at me and we were only a meter away - way too close for ... read more

Today was a day where we would get to chase rhinos while riding an elephant. Exciting huh... well, that's what the travel brochure said anyway. Royal Chitwan National Park is a national park in the south of Nepal where the British Royals used to hunt the poor animals for fun. Today it's a major tourist attraction and conservation park which promises the traveller the chance to get close to exotic wildlife such as rhinos, sloth bears and even the occasional bengal tiger. Due to major delays on the road to Chitwan (due to the Maoist terrorists) we couldn't take the super cheap bus but instead had to fly on a tiny vomit-inducing plane (major rip off). The 25 minute flight gave us a bird's eye view of the Nepalese country-side including the gorgeous stepped mountainsides and ... read more

Our first day in Chitwan we got a room at Tiger lodge with the other westerners from the bus ride there - Micky (Isreal), a Canadian and an Assie. I can't remember the names of the others, but let's call them Bruce and Can - OK? We took a look around the small town and checked out prices and then booked a elephant ride into the Terai to see Rhinos, and a full day hike into the park as far as the Crocodile sanctuary, a night in a village there and back the next morning. The elephant ride was with the four of us on top plus the 'driver' and it was a pretty lolling, uncomfortable ride. We saw a Black Rhino in a water hole straight away which was great, and then not so much ... read more

Finally, after 16 months and 14 days on the road since setting off to sunny Rio de Janeiro, I am back home in Manchester and, yes, its raining! Our final few weeks travelling in Nepal and India were pretty eventful. I last wrote from Kathmandu where I was still sick from the dodgy Indian restaurants (what do they expect when there are goats roaming around in the kitchen?!). From Kathmandu we took an 8 hour bus ride to Chitwan National Park. On the way we saw three separate road accidents - very unnerving! Chitwan itself was wonderful. When we arrived, there were absolutely no other foreign tourists so we were practically dragged into all the hotels and ended up with yet another great deal - a gorgeous room for only $1.50. The thing to do in ... read more

Well, the altitude and dehydration caught up with me. I was eating dinner at a restaurant and I knew I was going to pass out. I made eye contact with a guy a few tables away and as he got up, I went down. I woke up to him and two other people trying to make me drink water. I must have been delirious because I told the guy (he's Israeli) that he looked like an angel! They helped me back to my hotel and I spent 3 miserable days with some type of stomach bug and I was weaker than I've ever been in my life. I actually got a little scared for a minute...being alone on the other side of the world when you are sick is not fun! There was a little ... read more
