Well here it is ladies and gentlemen our malaysian leg of the blog. After a short flight from phuket we arrived in Kuala Lumpur. We didnt have a place pre booked to stay because we thought we would be alright and find a place when we got here (how wrong we were). We got dropped off at KL Sentral ( there spelling) thinking it would be the central area of KL (how wrong we were again) it was like getting warped into india. we was surrounded by a million indians trying to sell us t shirts asking us to go into there shops all this with our backpacks still on AS IF. We walked around for a bit trying to find a place to stay and because our bags are very heavy we would of ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Cameron Highlands » Tanah Rata By SarahP July 18th 2007 Good day to you all back in that green and pleasant land we call England (most of you!) - you'll never guess what we had a couple of days ago (well you might from the title) - a blimming cream tea!! With real milk as well which I can tell you is a rare sight in this part of the world - the locals drink sweet condensed milk with their tea. I'm trying to sound colonial but it's not working - jolly good! Hm....! After our last post I did actually manage to hobble round the old lonely planet "walking tour" of Georgetown, we saw some grand buildings and Fort Cornwallis, which is where the English first landed on Penang Island. ... read more

We had a mammoth journey to get to Kuala Lumpur (KL) our next destination. We left Ko Samui at 4.45pm on Saturday taking first a taxi, then a boat, followed by a bus and train journey that took us to Butterworth. During the journey we had to disembark with all our luggage to go through Thai emigration and walk 20feet to Malaysian immigration and then back on the train! We had an 8 hour wait for the next train so decided to take the ferry to Georgetown on the island of Penang, described as a "fascinating city with a cultural history." The reality though was very different. The town was dilapidated and run down, a real ghost town. We traipsed around for ages in the boiling heat trying to find something interesting and some lunch ... read more

It was a hard decision leaving Koh Tao but at the time there wasn't enough work and plus not having my own equipment I wasn't making any cash. Drinking my traveling money away at the Lotus bar I decided enough was enough and to move on boo hooo. However I did end my stay with the best six dives ever with loads of Grey Reef sharks another turtle and some excellent schools of fish! Before going to Malaysia I stopped off at Koh Pangyang a slightly bigger island south of Koh Tao. On arriving I had no where to stay so convinced two girls to let me stay on there porch in my hammock, lucky I had my mozzy net too so had a comfy nights sleep. The next day I acquired some accommodation in ... read more

Its rare to be forced back home in the middle of the travels and enjoy home comforts, recharging and then being spit out on the road again. Although the latter is fully voluntary, similar to jumping off a plane at 15000 ft with some billowing material strapped on your back. In any case, writing about home through a traveller's eyes is too good an opportunity to miss. The stolen passport saga continues... For time memorial, even up till I applied for a new passport in Singapore in 2003, the level of service was pretty low. I have vivid memories of High Commission staff chatting and lounging behind the counters without giving any explanation as to the delay in passport collections. Fast forward to 2007, the experience seems to have improved dramatically with little to no queues, ... read more

Hi all. Just a quick word here from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We left Koh Phangan early Sunday morning, hoping to arrive here the following morning on an overnight bus. However, we experienced our first transport disaster when we missed our connecting bus (Dont ask!) from the Thai border. As there were no other buses leaving that day, we had to spend a night at the nondescript Border town of HatYai. Next morning we woke bright and early and caught the Bus to Kuala Lumpur; arrived at around 8pm. After grabbing some dinner, we spent the first night around the famous Petronas Twin Towers. Apparently, these were the worlds highest skyscrapers until about 3 years ago (Think Tapei took the mantle) and they are massive. At night both towers are illuminated by thousands of lights, making for ... read more

Ok hi once more this latest installment is from Perhentian Islands to Kuala Lumpur, where we are at the moment. After leaving the islands we were dropped off in Kuala Besut, a small village by the sea. We were planning on catching a bus directly to KL but the only departure that day was at midnight. We didnt want to hang about for 10 hours so we got a bus to Kuala Terranganu instead, which is on the way to KL anyway. We then wanted to get straight on another bus to KL but they were all full until the following morning, so we found a hotel to stay over. The hotel was minging and the bedsheets were filthy so we asked them to change them for us, which they did thank god. We were ... read more

Ueber 7 Monate haben wir in dieser spannenden Region verbracht. So sehr anders als die europaeische Kultur, so liebenswert ... , aufregend ... , manchmal so nervig ...

Ok, so we arrived in Malaysia and took the 30minute ferry to Butterworth, we were hoping we would be able to get a bus to The Cameron highlands that night but unfortunately our luck was not in, we had totally forgot that there was a hour time difference in Malaysia than Indonesia, one hour forward so it was 20 past 8 but the time we arrived which meant it was far too late to get a bus so we enquired where we could stay the night and was told about a place just 5 minute walk away so we headed off with backpacks on and sore shoudlers lol! We stopped to use a bank and thought we would ask the lady there about a Guesthouse, the told us of 2 just another 5/10minute walk away ... read more
