Hey Everyone Welcome to our adventures in Borneo!! When we last left you I was getting very excited about our trip over to Sabah in Malaysian Borneo. After a plane trip over from Kuala Lumpur, we arrived in Sandakan which was going to be our base for the next 6 days. Sandakan isn’t exactly the prettiest places we have been, in fact if you didn’t know about all the amazing things that lay on its doorstep you’d probably be on the first plane out of there. After planning everything that we were going to cram into our short trip we grabbed a quick bite at a “bistro restaurant at the harbour side”, which turned out to be a café with plastic chairs on the quay of a diesel fumed port, before hitting the hay in order ... read more

Our one whole day in Malaysia's capital was very busy! We woke at 7ish and had breakfast and had to run from the hostel to the Petronas Towers to join the queue for tickets to the sky bridge. It's free to go up there - but we had to queue for about an hour and then go back at 12:30 to actually do the tour. In the interval we walked around the shopping centre underneath - it's really nice (and cheap) and full of all of the designers that you can think of. Then we went to the tourist centre and booked out coach tickets to Taman Negara - to leave the next morning. The Petronas tour itself started with a short 3D advert for Pertonas (a Malaysian oil company) - we got to wear geeky ... read more

Its true and Kuching is totally cat orientated, they have a Museum of Cats and cat statues all over the place. This city is really attractive probably more so then KK, I am amazed as most Asian cities just arent. On arrival from the airport I went wandering around for quite a while, I was trying to find a Lonely Planet book for Indonesia as I go there in a few days and I wanted to go to Mcdonalds, I have never been a big fan of Asian food and I am getting sick of chicken and rice. Although saying that I am looking forward to Soto Ayam when I get to Indo. I then wandered along the river front and checked out the antique shops, I found a great sword but am reluctant to risk ... read more

On our arrival in Kota Kinabalu (KK - capital of Sabah) we were very excited as there was so much to do and we had many things to get booked. This excitement soon turned to disapointed though as the first thing we went to book, a climb up Mt Kinabalu, turned out to be fully booked until September!! This is the highest mountain in South East Asia (over 12,000 feet) and was something we were really looking forward to doing. There is a limited number of people allowed to climb each day and all that "Visit Malaysia 50th Anniversary" advertising is paying off!! The next thing on our list was a visit to the turtle islands to see turtles laying eggs at night and hatchlings being released into the sea.......this is also fully booked for months ... read more

Well after nine hard days working it was time for some chill out days off though we don’t tend to have total chill out days because usually there is some excursion arranged and this time was no exception. The day started with a drive to the burial grounds about 1 ½ hours drive from Sepilok. As the ancient site no photography was allowed. The burials took place are in caves in a small hill with the higher status members of the local tribe were buried (or probably more correctly entombed) in a cave at the top of the hill which involved a steep climb to view and several steep steps to negotiate (I have an aversion to steps after Mount Kinabalu!). The people themselves are entombed in decorated log halves which from the size of them ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Melaka » Melaka City July 24th 2007

So we took the bus to Melaka and into Malaysia on Sunday morning, it was about a 4 1/2 hour journey but it passed pretty fast with all of the jungle scenery and tin hut villages going past. We also had our first over land border crossing from Singapore into Malaysia. Was easier than expected (minus a little hastle from our bus driver). We went through customs on the Singaporean side then got back onto the bus to cross the water and had to get off again on the other side to do the same. On arrival in Melaka we were accosted a few times by hostel touts, one turned out to be from the hostel we booked so the guy introduced us to the owner who in turn gave us a lift to the hostel ... read more

The bus journey. Yes I know I go on about them, but when you don’t have the pleasure, and believe me it is a real pleasure of having your own transport there’s a good chance you’ll be traveling by bus, coach or minibus or a combination of all three in order to reach your chosen destination. After a while you too would learn to loath buses. Apart from being driven by someone who clearly shouldn’t be given a driving license soley as a potential danger to others health, the constant delays and unscheduled stops (I kid you not. We stopped this one time at what was presumably the drivers home so he could collect in the washing hung out on the line) really add to the experience of never getting where you want to go fast ... read more

Took the hotel transfer to the long distance bus station in Kuantan, the twenty minute journey cost more than the price of our bus tickets for a three and a half hour journey to Mersing! We were punctual as ever purchasing our bus tickets two and a half hours prior to the bus departing. We left our bags at the station and headed to the near by shopping centre where I had spotted a Starbucks. Killed the time nursing our frappucinos and taking advantage of the free wireless. We ate an unusual cheese and pineapple roll on the journey down. We arrived in Mersing just before dark and headed to the Embassy hotel. This was the cheapest place we have stayed on this trip so far, at less than eight pounds for the night. To be ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Melaka » Melaka City July 22nd 2007

Our bus to Melaka left at 10am on 22nd July. It was only half-full, and we hadn't even needed to book. There was also a rule about not eating or drinking on the bus that luckily everybody seemed to ignore (it was a four and a half hour journey!) We had to go through a checkpoint on exiting Singapore, and another to enter Malaysia. The former was simple, but the latter involved the bus driver getting irate at me and Aaron because we took longer than everybody else because we hadn't been given the card that we were meant to fill in on the bus (despite having asked for one earlier). He decided we were having 'passport problems' though, obviously our own fault and nothing to do with him. We got through eventually, and carried on ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Kuantan July 22nd 2007

The journey to Kuantan was a bit of an ordeal, the economy bus was somewhat lacking in luggage space so we had to sit with our bags, which aren’t the lightest or smallest. The bus was also over an hour late and the journey six hours. However it was worth the DVT for our luxurious junior suite at the Swiss Garden Resort and Spa. We had actually booked the cheapest room available at this hotel, but were gratefully upgraded. We have been taking advantage of the hotels facilities, despite the rain, which always seems to arrive when we check in somewhere decent with a pool! Eating too much western food (I had the biggest BBQ ribs I have ever seen) but we will be back to the local delicacies soon enough. The local Malaysian cabaret act ... read more
